Stephen King in a class of his own
Review of Different Seasons - Stephen King by
bigmike33
Advantages: Great short stories, each a great novel in its own right
Disadvantages: 'The Body' is a little long
...late at night, though it does get rather bloody at the end. Clearly King's forte is horror, so it's nice to see him signing off with what he does best.
Conclusion
The standard of Stephen King really is exceptional, with his collection of novellas in Different Seasons really showing off his talents as an all round author. For me the first two novellas are the best, with Apt Pupil sticking in my mind the most. In all the novellas King draws you right in to the action so that you feel that you're part of the story. In the Shawshank Redemption you feel as if you're in prison with Andy, feeling his pain and hoping for redemption, while in The Body you can see yourself walking along with Gordie, Vern, Teddy and Chris as they venture deeper into the woods. Any author who can draw you in to a story in such a way really is a master of the craft...

Not a lot of action, as far as I'm concerned
Review of Oral B CrossAction by
rsmith
Advantages: Indicator bristles are a good idea
Disadvantages: Nowhere near as good as it looks, and it could hurt your gums
...And I'm a bit cross too!
I’d always been pleased with the Oral B toothbrushes, and I’ve been buying them since around 20 years ago, when I remember my dentist recommended them to me. It may even be longer ago that that, but I’m showing my age here!
I haven’t used Oral B toothbrushes exclusively – they weren’t always even that easy to find in the shops in the earlier days. But I did prefer them, they always seemed to be that little bit softer, more comfortable to use, and there was a good range of sizes (OralB 40 was for small mouths, OralB 60 for bigger mouths – I probably don’t need to tell you which I am)
So I bought an Oral B CrossAction toothbrush around 2 weeks ago, and I’m here to let you know what I think about it.
This is where I think I need to introduce the ® sign...

The Ultimate B-Movie Homage
Review of It - Stephen King by
RichardW
Advantages: Terrifying, charming, utterly real, with a cast of characters ou'll hate saying goodbye to come the novel's end.
Disadvantages: It's a biggie - not overwritten at all though, in my opinion. Well-judged, but not a quick read.
...the ultimate in B-movie homages.
Another novel that I have to describe as a 'true modern classic', this is vintage king in full-blown horror mode. If his more recent forays into the genre, muted as they seem, haven't appealed, go back and check this out. It will refresh your memory about why Stephen King has the reputation he does. Books like this don't happen very often....

Plan B
Review of Who Needs Actions When You Got Words (Parental Advisory) [PA] - Plan B by
brianroper316
Advantages: some excellant songs
Disadvantages: lots of swearing
...Plan B - Who Needs Action When You Got Words
Firstly this album is very very rude and the parental advisory sticker should be taken notice of. Some of the words, lines and innuendos in this album make the contents of many other 'explicit' albums seem fit for kids. However with that besides this album is very good and best of all its British. Plan B's lyrical ability, in my opinion, stand him out against not only other English rappers but also most of what comes over from the states. The music is also different and, again in my opinion, superior to what has been released recently. Much of the album's lyrics are from the point of view of inner city kids and the 'tough' lives that they live and sound like they are very heart felt, which shows with the emotion throughout. Also of note is the Plan B plays much of the music on his guitar...

Review of The Talisman - Stephen King, Peter Straub by
Kes30
Advantages: A Wonderful Journey, brilliant read
Disadvantages: May cause sleepness nights as you can't put it down
...~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
To wrap this up, The Talisman is amongst the best books I have read. I have heard some say that they would not really class this as a horror novel and I kind of agree, but not entirely. The Talisman is an adventure fantasy more than anything else, but there are aspects to it that could be classed as horror. Some of the creatures that the characters come across could certainly be classed as horrific, as could anything inhabiting 'The Blasted Lands' in the final portion of the book.
Though I am a fan of horror, I would say to any lover of good fiction to give this a try. The quality of the writing is superb and any book that can keep you turning the pages the way this can is worth reading. Fantasy lovers will adore it, but so will most people.
The book also has a few messages hidden away - the impact our actions in this world may have...

Sonic Adventure 2 .. Music to your Ears
Review of Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (GameCube) by
Fuzzmaster2002
Advantages: Fast-paced, smart music, clever ideas
Disadvantages: Dodgy camera, sometimes repetitive
...Fast, fly-by, running, jumping, gliding action. And only one game can boast all these features. Sonic Adventure 2 : Battle. Featuring Sonic and all his friends (and foes) you get to fight as either the good guys (Sonic, Knuckles and Tails) to try and the stop world domination by the bad guys (Dr Eggman, Shadow and Rouge). It was clever idea which adds longetivity to the game and also makes it quite original, as normally you only have to stop the 'baddies'.
Each character has their own type of action stage, Sonic and Shadow have fast 3D running stage games where basically you collect rings and destroy enemies as quickly as possible to get a good ranking. Tails and Eggman control robots and they have shooting stages where you destroy everything in site, collect rings and try and reach for the goal in the best time possible. Knuckles...

Beethoven's symphonies: the rediscovered frontier
Review of Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 (London Classical Players) - Sir Roger Norrington by
berlioz
Advantages: A new way to hear Beethoven
Disadvantages: Surpassed by some later period cycles
...the coffin into the grave, therefore lessening the emotional impact of the whole. Indeed, when taken at an emotional viewpoint the fastness of the tempo makes the music a little hard to get oriented with and particularly the final breaking down of the march music doesn't really convince in its tragic implications. The Scherzo and Finale on the other hand benefit much from the fast speeds like the first movement did, with the former being more energetic than usual as is befitting and the latter brings out a great culmination that ends with two sharp E flat chords, echoing the opening of the first movement. Overall its not a bad performance but at points it can require some getting used to.
Symphony No.4 in B flat major, Op.60
The poetic Fourth Symphony receives a quite decent performance from Norrington with the fast movements coming off...

PART THREE: RETURNING TO RAIDERS TERRITORY
Probably what I loved best about INDY IV was its old-fashioned sensibilities. Recall that 1981's RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was a rock 'em, sock 'em throwback to 1930s serials; not only is it great as a movie, but (for once) Paramount was right in their marketing: it IS the greatest adventure film of all time. Sure, we've had many great adventures before it such as GUNGA DIN and STAGECOACH, but RAIDERS broke all the rules by just having one stunt or action set-piece after another, making it a cinematic rollercoaster ride. And, it hasn't been equaled since, and it never will be no matter how many MUMMY or NATIONAL TREASURE movies get made.
As soon as INDY IV opens, it immediately returns to RAIDERS by opening up with an early Paramount logo (which looks more out of the 1960s than 1980s...

And the game ish on!
Review of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen DVD by
DarkMark
Advantages: a superb concept, fast and occasionally fun
Disadvantages: bad acting, inconsistent special effects, almost no plot, poor script
...Stephen Norrington (“Blade”) clearly didn’t have the finance to carrying the special effects off.
Norrington’s direction is typical comic book style, lots of colours/tones and flashy/ quick camera changes. The problem is, during the action sequences, Norrington and editor Paul Rubell cut and change camera angles too quickly. Fast camera changes are done to inspire visual adrenaline during action scenes and can be effective if done well. In the case of “The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen” it’s cut and changed so much during scenes of total anarchy that you can’t fully register or in fact appreciate what is actually going on. Nemo winning easily in one split second cut, Quatermain dodging bullets in another, it’s like pushing the fast forward button on your remote control. The film’s action sequences beg for ultra violence, the kind...
