Audi A4
Review of Audi A4 1.9 TDI by
adamclayton101
Advantages: Acceleration (V6, S4), Automatic-transmission performance (CVT), Steering/handling, Ride (base suspension), Interior materials, Available AWD
Disadvantages: Rear-seat room
...The vast majority of A4s are sold with quattro. Quattro A4s with 4 cyl and automatic transmission feel slightly underpowered. Manual-transmission quattro 1.8Ts are lively enough, while manual-transmission V6 quattros are satisfyingly quick. Lighter front-drive models feel spry with any transmission, though CVT versions are lazy from a stop. Test 1.8T CVT sedan did 8.6 sec 0-60 mph; test V6 CVT Cabriolet did 7.8. Seamless CVT acts much like conventional automatic, but requires use of manual mode for best performance. Manual transmissions controlled by precise shifters. S4's V8 strong at all speeds; test sedan did 5.6 sec 0-60.
Averages for manual-transmission test models: 1.8T sedan, 24.8 mpg; 1.8T Avant, 21.5; V6 quattro sedans,18.3-21; S4 sedan, 15.6; S4 Avant, 15.9; S4 Cabriolet, 14.1. Audi says CVT is 10 percent more fuel efficient...

Subtle performer
Review of VW Passat 1.8T 20V Sport by
paulo
Advantages: Solid, best bits of VW and Audi
Disadvantages: Drive can be bland at times
...I love this car. It's basically the best bits of Audi and VW, but at a VW price. I have the full leather seats in mine, which is why the price shown here is above RRP.
The body is based on the same B5 platform as the Audi A4 and A6, and is sized mid-way between the two. The 1.8T engine can be found right across the Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda range, and boy does it go when you put your foot down! The AirCon (or should I say 'Climate Control') is VW, which is great, since the VW unit is better than the Audi equivalent!
The drive is a funny mixture of boring and fun. It's great in a straight line (good accelleration) but boring on cornering. Actually, that's wrong - it's bland rather than boring. It gets a zero rather than a minus score. You only notice there's a problem when you start looking. Best thing to do is just sit back and anjoy the car...

Audi A4 Avant Turbo Sport
Review of Audi A4 Avant 1.8 T by
Kimpalmer
Advantages: Build Quality, Performance, Style.
Disadvantages: Cost, Handling at very high speeds
...cars. OK, so it is expensive, but it is worth it. We have two Audi's in the household, and I don't think we will ever regret it! Oh, and yes the handles above the seats are oil-dampened!...

Superb Saloon Car
Review of VW Passat 1.8T 20V Sport by
astraugh
Advantages: Great Engine, Great Body, Great Car
Disadvantages: Slightly soft suspension.
...Its with great regret that I prepare to say goodbye to my Passat 1.8T Sport. I chose it as a company car two years ago when my work required me to do endless long journeys, and it was perfect for that job.
VW based the Passat on the same platform as the group's Audi A4 and A6. The A4 is slightly smaller than the Passat and the A6 slightly larger, but both are more expensive than the Passat. Some may prefer the Audi badge, but in terms of value for money, the VW is a clear winner.
For me the 1.8T engine is the best feature of this car. The Passat version produces 150bhp, though the same engine is easily tweaked to 180 or even 225bhp in the Audi TT, so it clearly isn't performing under too much stress in the Passat. More importantly it produces torque across its entire rev range so the engine doesn't need to be thrashed to get...

Full Marks
Review of Audi by
Niknak
Advantages: Quality of Service, excellent showroom and range
Disadvantages: None apparent so far
...I was in the market for a new company car last year to upgrade from my VW Bora, so having always fancied an Audi I called into Smith Knight Fay in Stockport.
From my initial visit I couldn't fault the quality of service I received from them. The salesman, Neil Holland if you ever have cause to visit, was excellent. From discussing the full range of A4's, arranging test drives of a number of cars to assisting with my final selection, my enquiry was dealt with in a friendly, professional manner. His advice even extended to the optimum selection of options to fit in with my budget that would maximise the resale value of the car.
After finally settling on an A4 1.8T, I was regularly updated on the status of my order until a delivery date was obtained and I finally collected the car, which included a full introduction to the vehicle...

Audi after sales service
Review of Audi by
Aldrethboy
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: everything
...I am experiencing a very poor customer service.
A year ago I purchased a A4 TDI Avant from John Fox Audi in Nottingham (now part of Synter) with a FSH and extended warranty for 1 year. At the time of purchase the car had covered 67,000 miles. Two weeks ago the car developed a gearbox fault with was related to the gearboxs ECU unit and input shaft. The dealer Sytner Audi in Slough said no problem - warranty will cover. It now transpires that the gearbox oil was not changed at 40 - 42,000 miles or rather there is no record of it being changed.
Audi's warranty department claim its the dealer fault, Sytner Slough say its Nottingham's fault and the Warranty departments. Audi Customer Service Department claim it is Nottingham's fault. Nottingham claim it is Peterborough's fault for not having any records, and yes I'm sat in the middle...

Cute scoot
Review of Audi A4 Cabriolet by
tagheur
Advantages: pretty smart
Disadvantages: pretty expensive
..., it turns out that you can have no less than 5 different engines and three different gearboxes in the A4 Cab. As if that wasn’t enough, the car can be had with option of two or four-wheel drive (Audi’s famous Quattro) and there are no less than 13 different alloy wheel patterns, 17 external colours, 15 interior trims and 7 trim inlay variations. And we haven’t even started on the optional extras yet! You begin to wonder if they’ve ever built two the same.
The big question is which engine to have… Hmmm. Here’s what you get; 163ps in the 1.8T, 170ps in the 2.3 (why did they bother?) 163ps in the diesel, 220ps in the 3.0 and a whopping 344ps in the V8 powered S4, which just happens to be exactly one horsepower more than BMW’s M3 – Vorsprung durch technik as they say in Germany, which roughly translated means, “Up yours BMW”
Of course...

New Model A4 1.8T
Review of Audi A4 1.8 T by
Niknak
Advantages: Looks, performance, price
Disadvantages: ummm, nope, still can't think of any
...Thought it was time for an update seeing as I've had the car for over 6 months...
I'd always had a thing about Audis, I'd love an S6 but the budget won't stretch, so the A4 was an obvious choice. Looking at the range I had the choice of the entry-level 2.0 of the 1.8T in either 2 wheel drive or Quattro. Comparing the performance the 2.0 pushes out 130bhp with the 1.8T raising this to 150bhp, simple choice then. Comparing this with the 3 series, the 318 offers only 112bhp, with the 320 jumping upto 170bhp, though the new model increases capacity to 2.3 litres. After test driving both variants I decided on the 2 wheel drive, though the brochure gives the same 8.4sec 0-60 time, the 2 wheel drive seems quicker, probably as the Quattro has the power being put out to all 4 wheels. I must say though that the Quattro definitely has the edge...

Aha, not another audi bore mobile
Review of Audi A6 1.8 T by
dlwtheking
Advantages: Very roomy and relaxing with quality feel and looks
Disadvantages: not very chuckable
...Three months ago i bought a two year old example Audi A6 1.8T SE.I must admit i hadn't considered this initially as i thought it a little too large for my needs. As i've now got it i can confirm, yes it is too large for me to justify as i have no family but what the hell i would never have suited a fiesta anyway.
Where to start;aha the styling. Now you may disagree but i think this is a beautiful car with crisp lines and no fussy detailing and it looks really good in the 'metal'. Some could argue that it is too similar to the A4 and Passat but i would say 'Pah to you sir'.
The performance; now this is where you think that the 1.8T isn't big enough to haul along a car of this size, but you're wrong. Granted the traffic light race is always going to be tricky, but a 0-60 time of 9.4 and top whack of 135mph is not too shabby, and added...

Audi A4 1.8SE Auto 4 Door
Review of Audi A4 1.8 by
NorwichRicky
Advantages: Ride, Build Quality, Image, Looks, Equipment
Disadvantages: Rear Legroom, Running costs, Dull Handling
...Here's my first ever review (again - sorry for posting it in the wrong section before!)
I've had my 1998 Audi A4 1.8SE Auto 4 door for 4 months now and it still puts a smile on my face. Whether it's the solid 'thunk' of the doors closing, or the gorgeous tone of the superb 'Concert' stereo, the Audi continues to be a car I will never regret buying.
I purchased privately from a family who had cherished the car - it came in superb condition, with low mileage, and a full Audi service history. The light green (Jasper Green) really looks great when I've thrown the sponge on it, and the standard 16" alloys do a good job of setting the car off.
It's by no means a perfect car though. The rear legroom is really poor, and the boot openning isn't too clever either - I'd have had an Avant if I could have afforded one. The handling is a little...
