Beyond borders
Review of Beyond Borders DVD by
barefoot777
Advantages: in the movies
Disadvantages: for not very long time
...of the content. However I don’t think that this film is mature enough to gain anything more than sympathetic feelings and a bit of the money to Clive Owen [I assume that A.Jollie, has it enough by now]. According to the director’s previous experience, I reckon that this film’s only ambition is to get commercial. But, how au how, they think such a subject and intense realistic insight into the human suffer, can get commercial. I’m sorry, but a big stars are just not enough to drag attention on the suffer of the world. It only does opposite: a cynical view of the real purpose of NGOs "helping" all over the world. Maybe director, himself didn’t wanted to achieve no more that sympathies of the rich higher society of the world. "Beyond borders" is a mix of humanitarian crises and romantic escapism, that might makes you feel...

Simbach am Inn
Review of Simbach am Inn (Germany) by
Dalesman
Advantages: Friendly, Clean well located
Disadvantages: None
...Simbach am Inn a quiet Bavarian border Town on close to Austria..
I recently journied to Simbach on a business trip, I stayed at the Hotel Gottler and was made to feel very welcome by the owner. I stayed during the Towns Stadtfest which was excellent, hundreds of locals sitting at tables in the Town square behind the Town Hall drinking, dancing and being entertained, and not a squabble or fall out amongst anyone ( Britain could learn a lot from this !!!)...
everyone was so friendly, the Stadfest was well organised, the procession from the Town Hall to the Austrian Border by the River Inn and then back to the Town Hall included just about the whole Town, everyone seemed to take part, there were many Bavarian bands, floats and then when the procession was finished everyone poured into the square to begin the festivities.
Stalls selling...

Noon's further adventures into the Vurt...
Review of Pollen - Jeff Noon by
thenewboy
Advantages: Another po-mo sci-fi symbolistic trip through a remixed future
Disadvantages: Quite wierd; easier to understand if you have read the previous book, Vurt
...by the boss of her corporate employer, a city wide cab network with an online virtual map of the city. The psychic shadow-cop Sybil Jones has to investigate the case, against a background of a city suffering a hayfever that literally kills people. Sybil's investigations pull her into a massive web of intrigue involving the cab company, upper members of the police force, an ancient stoned hippy with a pirate radio station and an afro-sporting girlfriend, and beings from beyond reality's borders. She ends up crossing these very borders herself, as the narrator of the story and a participant in the action, and the plot is full of twists and loops, with a surprise round every corner. A brilliant book in it's own right, and a fantastic follow up for those who want to see the world Noon has dreamed evolve further...excellent....

The Evil That Men Do
Review of Beyond Borders DVD by
LostWitness
Advantages: Good plot material - thought-provoking stuff
Disadvantages: Angelina Jolie's Lips
...a motorway bridge on the M25, where he has died alone and terrified, a victim of the bitter cold.
Watching the events unravel on the news, Sarah finds it very difficult to ignore or accept the plight of the African people. Despite her husband’s concerns, she provides a sizeable donation to fund aid and decides to travel with the supplies to Africa, where she can see the aid effort for herself. She is unprepared for what she finds, but one thing is sure. Sarah Jordan’s life will never be the same again.
Given the powerful subject matter, Beyond Borders is a film that has to tread very carefully indeed. Positioned as an epic romantic drama, it sets itself up for the very difficult task of telling a character-driven story, woven around some of the most terrible world events of the last two decades. It succeeds to a point but never...

The border between country and rock
Review of On The Border - Eagles (Rock) (The) by
JOHNV
Advantages: One of the group's best, still freshest-sounding albums
Disadvantages: None
...It was evident that on their first two albums The Eagles were trying to broaden their musical base beyond country music, and get closer to rock'n'roll. With 'On The Border' they made it, thanks partly to their decision to fire British producer Glyn Johns after completing two tracks and basing themselves in Los Angeles with American working partner Bill Szymczyk, and partly to recruiting additional lead guitarist Don Felder, who is listed on the cover as 'late arrival'.
Taken as a whole, the ten songs straddle the line between both categories pretty well. In my view, the infectious 'Already Gone' was always one of their best songs ever, with its exuberant chorus and harmonies. (Don't take my word for it, it's also apparently Francis Rossi's Eagles favourite too). Granted, the lyrics have a sting in the tail; this is the 'victory song...

Beautiful and expensive
Review of General: Switzerland by
JVL
Advantages: The scenery is fabulous, and the people are friendly
Disadvantages: But you can't understand what they're saying, and it's not cheap!
...I have had the pleasure of visiting Switzerland several times in the last few months, the border is only 2 hours to the south of Heidelberg, and although this is definitely a very expensive country to spend time in, it is well worth a visit!
First and foremost, the scenery is generally stunning, as Switzerland is effectively the Alps... Basel, the city right on the border with France and Germany, sits on a plain at the foothills of this mountain range but as soon as you get to the southern side of the city, the peaks loom up out of the mist, and the main motorway cuts right through the valleys. It is a phenomenal drive if you are heading south to Milan, as the motorway carves a path between these towering mountainsides and the weather seems to change in each valley! It is pretty difficult to concentrate on the road with all...

"Those we do not speak of"
Review of The Village DVD by
lizzie12345
Advantages: Keeps you on the edge of your seat, Romantic , Wierd storyline
Disadvantages: Not easy to get the twist
...Starring : Joaquin Phoenix, bryce Howard, William Hurt, Sigourney Weaver, Adrian Brody, Judy Greer
Director: M.Night Shyamalan
Running time: 108 Mins
Rating: 12A
Drama, Horror, Romance, Thriller
"The Village" M.Night Shyamalan's Latest effort, sees him stay ridgley true to form, throwing our expectations first one way and then the next, but by now we all know that the ending is somewhat going to have a twist. Unlike Unbreakable ant The sixth sense this film does not have an easy twist to get.
This film, as you might have guessed from the title is about a village and the folk that live there. They are onld fashioned and their lives are dedicated by fear of the unseen creatures inhabiting the woods beyond the village borders, or "those we do not speak of", as they are known. For years the village residents have lived under an uneasy...

Interestingly Different
Review of The Blair Witch Project DVD by
Chatshow
Advantages: Original, refreshing and definately unsettling
Disadvantages: Disjointed footage may put some people off
...The Blair Witch Project is a film that illicits some interesting responses from those who watch it. There are two clear camps on this one; firstly, the film is seen as visionary, a truly scary creation that borders so closely on reality as to be horrific beyond belief. The other camp believes it to be absolute, mind numbing drivel.
Truth be told, the failing of the film was when someone said it was the "Greatest horror film ever", the second you brand a film with this is the second it becomes absolutely not the greatest horror film ever.
The film does evoke a sense of fear, claustrophobia and dread in those that watch it, assuming you are not expecting a regular film with a distinctive beginning, middle and end. If you are looking for a linear piece of work where every twist and turn is explained to you in great detail...

Same old bond offers escape for us normal people
Review of Die Another Day (Special Edition) by
togher1
Advantages: Typical bond film
Disadvantages: Product placements of mobiles & watches, etc
...in his eye and an uncontrollable groin too!
The film offers an escape from reality for the average person, more for men really as I think every male of the species would love to be Bond for a day, especially with the lovely Halle Berry, on pretty top form here too. Here's to more Bond adventure flicks, as that's what they are really. Adventure films beyond the borders of reality. Who else do you know who could surf on a one foot long surf board on a massive tidal wave propeled by a parachute after narrowly escaping a highly dangerous beam form the 'Laser beam' of the sun? Long live Bond!...

Dante Will Die (With Camera Work Like This)
Review of Devil May Cry (PS2) by
scream4bruce
Advantages: At best it's fairly fun
Disadvantages: The camera ruins the action muchly
...Speaking of the devil, the camera work goes to hell. But the disadvantages are beyond not seeing some of the enemies whom Dante is locked onto for targetting and having to dodge projectiles thrown from enemies out-of-sight (Dante has no block manouvre). Naturally, players will react to the change in camera angles, and this does not help the cause; also, the player's view of Dante can be obstructed by enemies, and as Dante's special attacks are pulled off relative to his position, it's awkward alright - it really is the work of the devil! Thus the game can be difficult for the wrong reasons.
The game is split into many a mission. There is a PowerUp system whereby red orbs are spent on goodies, but with the increasing prices of several stockables, perhaps continues should have been a part of the ranking system only, rather than...
