Microsoft - the not-so-nice side
Review of Computers by  tagheur

Advantages: pfffffffff
Disadvantages: Just don't get me started - OK?

...they released in 1990, some seven years after GEM and LISA. It was released with the most expensive software promo campaign the industry had ever seen and it had an initial low price of $39. In the final analysis, Gates did what neither IBM, DRI, Apple, nor Xerox were prepared to do. He bet the company on the success of a GUI. He won the bet. Gary Kildall dropped from the forefront of computing research and his company was acquired by Novell, who proceeded to screw it up. Eventually, the rights to CP/M, or FREEDOS as it is now known, were acquired by a company called Caldera. Caldera had the balls to do what Gary himself had not. On July 24th 1996 they filed an antitrust suit against Microsoft. The action was eventually settled out of court in Caldera's favour in January 2000, some twenty years after the initial infringement. The moral... Read review

An exploded mountain
Review of Askja (Iceland) by  davey

Advantages: You can sit outside in natural bathwater in ICELAND! Come on!
Disadvantages: Hard to reach, travel is expense on bus or by jeep

...Askja is a place where you abruptly sense the immense forces that have shaped Iceland throughout time. The black a field at the bottom of Askja and the sharp peaks towering all around, give this unique place a feel of mystery that will leave no-one untouched. Askja is a giant caldera (Spanish for cauldron) in the mountain range of Dyngjufjoll. Dyngjufjoll lies to the north of Vatnajokull - the third largest glacier behind the Arctic and Greenland. The caldera has subsided below the water table. In the S-E-corner of Askja lies Lake Oskjuvatn, 11 km2 and 217 m deep, which makes it the deepest lake in Iceland. The lake, formed by a giant eruption in 1875, is well fenced off by sheer cliff walls and can only be reached from the eastern side. Scientists believe that Askja may have been the biggest mountain in Iceland before it literally... Read review

Beware
Review of Gunung Batur (Bali) by  ImogenW

Advantages: stunning
Disadvantages: cold and poor

...... not a very nice way to start an op about such a truly stunning place but unfortunately necessary. Gunung Batur (Batur Mountain) is in central bali and is one of the island's most sacred places. It's a beautiful sight when you arrive at the top: the road climbs and climbs up the edge of this ancient volcano until you reach the lip of the caldera, when this astonishing view opens up. The walls of the caldera fall amost vertically to the plain that was the old centre of the volcano, which has now re-emerged in the centre of the plain as a new and very active volcano. Curling round one side of the new volcano is lake batur. THere is much you can do here. First instinct will be to get out of the car and admire the spectacle - well worth a look but be careful of the hawkers. This is a very poor area and visitors are pounced... Read review

Explosive!
Review of Supervolcano (Wide Screen) by  Coloneljohn

Advantages: Very factual
Disadvantages: Could cause sleepless nights, Lack of human interest possibly.

...on as usual whilst underground are forces greater than the largest atomic warhead just waiting to be released on an unsuspecting world. Yellowstone National Park in America long fascinated the scientists. There are hot springs that show there is volcanic activity somewhere near by. Lots of diligent work showed that there had been some vast eruptions in the past and there were layers of volcanic ash found very large distances from the park. So the big question was" Just where is this volcano?" After all we were used to volcano's being rather large mountains. But there are others and when they blew and collapsed they left rather a large whole in the ground called a caldera. But there was none that could be identified! Then it finally dawned on scientists. The whole park was the volcano!! An area some 34 miles by 44 miles was the volcanic... Read review

Ia , Santorini Island , Greece.
Review of Ia, Santorini by  tue-s-day

Advantages: It must be the most photogenic place on the island.
Disadvantages: Can be exspensive but you can visit for the day.

...If you are on holiday on the island of Santorini it is likely that you will be tempted to vist the town of Ia which is famous especially for it's sunsets. Picturesque white and blue houses are built into the rock that overlooks the Caldera; this is an expanse of water formed in the past by the island volcanic activity. Cruise ships sail into the Caldera to view the attractive town, and the colured rock formations (cliffs) that have been created by the erruptions of the volcano and also to allow their passengers to vist the town. Restaurants, hotels, houses and hoilday properties are situated (perched on the cliff face) to take advantage of the view of the sunset over the Caldera. Ia seems an exspensive place to stay for a holiday on Santorini but it is worth while taking a day trip there; it is a very photogenic place to visit. You... Read review

My own Heaven on Earth
Review of Santorini (Greece) by  greekteeth

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery never to be forgotten
Disadvantages: Prices increasing - possibly owing to influx of American Cruise ships

...Santorini island lies at the south end of the Cyclades group of islands. Santorini is an island of extraordinary beauty like nowhere else. Whether arriving by air or sea you are immediately struck by the volcanic cliffs of red brown rock topped by clusters of gleaming white sugar cube homes and villages - likened to the icing on a cake. Its volcanic sheer cliffs, rising straight from the deep blue sea, are layer upon layer of red volcanic rock within which clear strata can be seen. The island itself was formed into its current crescent shape by an immense volcanic eruption 3,500 years ago. This wiped out the Minoan civilisation in Crete 70 miles to the south leaving the world's biggest caldera - well able to take several cruise ships -and four smaller islands. Santorini's beauty owes much to the light - there is little in the way... Read review

Los Alamos
Review of General: New Mexico by  jodenton

Advantages: sunshine, scenery, 'big skies', SPACE SPACE SPACE
Disadvantages: the need to be able to drive

...seen anyone eat any food in there....it has poole and darts, an interesting mix of characters and a very uninteresting juke box. Regardless of how much you drink there though you'll certainly remember your night out and experiences from that place!!! A short drive from Los Alamos, or bicycle ride if you are feeling particularly energetic are three must sees of the state of New Mexico. They are all on or just off highway 4. Winding up the mountain road (highway 4) through spruce and juniper pine you will start to wonder if the road will ever stop going up. Eventually you'll reach the peak of the climb and then wind through the woods a little more until you come to a clearing and on your right you will come across the largest volcanic caldera in the states if not in the world. It is something like 14 miles squared and finished forming about... Read review

Coloured sulpher lakes, temples and geysers
Review of Dieng Plateau (Java) by  ImogenW

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: bloody cold and difficult to reach

...First of all, a quick hurrah - after many technical problems I am finally back in Ciao, so apologies to those to whose comments I have not responded - that's why. Right, the Dieng Plateau. This is essentially a high altitude plane created by the caldera of an ancient volcano in central Java. It's star attractions are a coloured sulpher lake, some very ancient hindu temples, sulpher mines, mud geysers and some truly stunning scenery. It does, however, have its drawbacks, of which more later. So let's deal with these one by one. First of all, the plain itself. It's pretty big, several kilometers across, and hard to get to. From the nearest big city it's a three-bus trip of some seven hours, so doesn't make sense as a day trip. But it's worth it when you get there, the clean cold air a welcome change ffrom the polluted humidity... Read review

On The Brim Of Bromo
Review of Gunung Bromo (Java) by  SophieWehr

Advantages: Stunning sunrise, volcanoes, stargazing
Disadvantages: Cold, but that's it!

...Mount Bromo as they know most tourists want to see the spectacular site (& sight - sorry, cheesy I know). WHAT IS MOUNT BROMO? Mount Bromo is a volcanic mountain in East Java, famous for it’s spectacular views of sunrise and vast ‘sand sea’ (covering 10 km) across the caldera of the ancient Tengger volcano. (Note - This sandy caldera has been protected since 1919, and it is believed to be the only conservation area in Indonesia, maybe even in the world to have such a unique ‘ocean of sand’ at an altitude of about 2000m above sea level.) Long, long ago the Tenneger volcano exploded. In it’s wake, it left a huge crater, lacking in life and reeling from the explosion. This would have been an amazing display of nature’s power as it completely blew off the top of this mammoth formation. In the barren 10km crater that was left, over time, 4... Read review
