Classic late 60s pop
Review of I See The Rain (The CBS Years 1966-1969) - Marmalade (The) by
JOHNV
Advantages: Timeless stuff from the golden era of British pop
Disadvantages: The odd bit of padding
...Marmalade were a classic example of the late 60s British group who wanted to write most of their material, but had to resort to custom-made, surefire hits from bespoke songwriters in order to keep the record company bosses sweet. However, that way they got the best of both worlds. This covers the years 1966 to 1969, including both sides of every single they released on CBS, plus all the remaining tracks on their first album "There's A Lot Of It About", and two previously unreleased numbers. The heavily orchestrated hits "Lovin' Things" and "Wait For Me Mary-Anne" are still evocative of British pop at its most enjoyable and least complicated, and nobody needs an introduction to their chart-topping Beatles cover "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". But the songs by vocalist Dean Ford (real name Thomas McAleese) and guitarist Junior Campbell give...

Rainbow Broadcasting - The History of Colour TV.
Review of Everything that starts with R ... by
callancool
Advantages: Interseting subject
Disadvantages: None really
...this. But it was far from perfect. The same year CBS in New York displayed its 'Field Sequential' system which utilised spinning tri-colour discs in front of the camera. Round about the same time the rival NBC network (owned by RCA who made most of the TV cameras and sets) trialed its own system.
Baird was preoccupied with colour TV, but the Second World War had made it impossible to pursue. But he still carried on his experiments with the medium, despite the devastation, moving several times. By 1946, he had just about perfected the system, and many people believe he was ready to start mass production of sets, but unfortunately, a year later he died. A colour photographic still from one of his experiments that year still survives, and the colour reproduction is remarkable for the time, though skin tones were pinkish. I've seen the still...

ROYALE WITH NO CHEESE!!!
Review of Casino Royale (2006) by
ultrafrosty
Advantages: A GREAT "REBOOT" OF THE BOND FRANCHISE!!!
Disadvantages: SOME CONFUSING TIMELINE ISSUES - BUT THAT'S ALL!
...:
---------------
Casino Royale was the first ever James Bond novel penned by Bond creator, Ian Fleming and was first published in a hard cover edition on April 13, 1953. This would be followed by another 11 Bond novels that Fleming would write - as well as two collections of short stories.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PREVIOUS ADAPTATIONS:
--------------------------------
The story of Casino Royale has been adapted on three occasions for the screen:
The first adaptation of Casino Royale was in 1954 when CBS paid Fleming a mere $1,000 to translate his novel into a one hour long television adventure. Strangely enough, Fleming went on two write another 32 episodes based upon James Bond for CBS but for whatever reason, CBS never picked them up - let alone aired them.
Fleming then bundled together those 32...

A Classic That Still Stands Tall
Review of Clash, The - Clash (The) by
bullybwoy
Advantages: Perfect.....although in an ideal world, 'Complete Control' & 'White Man...' would be on it
Disadvantages: But that would be cheating really....or at least, a later US print
...over three weekends in January 1977, the album was released at the end of April 1977. Although this might seem likely to be record company CBS' wishing to capitalise on the 'punk craze', it was also evidence that the band moved quickly, recording one single LP, one double LP & one triple LP all within a staggering 3 years. Also bear in mind that 'The Clash' was released a full 8 months before the Sex Pistols 'Never Mind The Bollocks' LP. This is important in terms of legacy - although the Pistols debut has always been talked about more as being the defining punk rock moment, kids were listening to the Clash LP & being influenced by it way before the Pistols even got theirs in the shops. As much as the Pistols debut had shock value, some good tunes, and admittedly a much sleeker production to it, it was widely regarded...

General William Westmoreland in Vietnam
Review of Essays by
miss_you_so_1
Advantages: Breif but informative
Disadvantages: Attitude towards government at time of Vietnam war too breif.
...Westmoreland had become two things: a celebrated war hero and the man that almost caused the fatalities of the American government's latest embarrassment. Unfortunately for Westmoreland, one group of people decided to take their disagreement one step further and so after Westmoreland's military career came to a close and his political attempt failed, he went into a messy judicial battle that involved him trying to sue the television channel CBS and one of their interviewers Mike Wallace for libel.
Westmoreland vs. CBS
Mike Wallace had interviewed Westmoreland on the subject of Vietnam and in particular the reports that Westmoreland had given concerning the Vietcong's troop numbers and strength. The interview was to be interwoven into a documentary called The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception, a name that just within itself makes certain...

Rage against the machine...
Review of Clash, The - Clash (The) by
dave27
Advantages: Ground breaking
Disadvantages: Never repeated
...“No more Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones ... 1977!”
It’s not on the album, but that’s the rallying sound of the West Way from 23 years ago as The Clash explode upon the world in their raggedy clothes and their even raggedier sound. It’s rough as a bear’s arse as Strummer, Jones and Simonon throw themselves wholeheartedly across your world view.
... and then become part of the machine.
The Clash were like that, a band full of paradoxes. They complained about being "so bored with the USA," yet had little compunction with becoming BIG IN AMERICA. They pleaded, "No Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones," then rapidly become the punk rock version of the Stones. They refused to comply with establishment ethics, yet swiftly sold their souls to the bloated media corporation, CBS, eventually becoming so dissatisfied...
