...Following the success of their first two albums ‘Good Charlotte’ and ‘The Young & The Hopeless’, Good Charlotte have a go at being ‘dark’ on us, supposedly going darker within their lyrics and heightening their overall sound. Now, being someone who loved their first two albums, I will honestly say that I would have loved this regardless, but it doesn’t mean that my opinion should be heard any less than a neutral. In fairness, Joel Madden’s quotes of this being a much darker record are not proven correct, with the same relative beat as was so evident on ‘The Young & The Hopeless’, yet with the success of that album what need is their to change things. ...One Saturday evening towards the end of 2002, I was making a cup of coffee in the kitchen, when I heard this amazing voice coming from the TV next door. The voice belonged to a woman who was singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, and it sounded fantastic! I rushed next door to see who it was, and found that it was Charlotte Church, who was being interviewed by Michael Parkinson! This was the first song I had ever heard her sing which was not operatic or classical, and I was really impressed. So when my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I had no trouble asking for “Prelude” her latest album. I shall now endeavour to give my opinions on each track and the album as a whole. ...his is Charlotte Church's most mature album, she sings hits from musicals a couple of classical pieces and folk pieces. I can't consider Charlotte Church a real soprano like Kathleen Battle for example. Her voice has some some technical problems but still Charlotte Church's voice is very beautiful!This album brings up some of her non-classical abilities which I think should be more explored. Tonight - An emotive opening song, from the famous musical by Leonard Bernstein, it's very strong with a lot of horns in the orchestra. Carrickfergus - A very very sweet folkloric piece about love, it's got some poppy beats along with the orchestra but it's still very beautiful, there's a videoclip for this music. ...Good Charlotte come across as the musical version of Marmite - you either love em or hate em, with the musical press showing absolutely no faith in the band nor their music, it has been left to their overflowing fan base to silence the critics. The band themselves have made public notice that they have absolutely no interest in what the media have to say and simply let the fans pass judgement on each new release, all of which have sold a cool 15 million to date. The latest release however, is the true test of the bands staying power and the first to truly divide their fans in opinion - with mixed reaction from any number of GC addicts worldwide. ...Actually Before i got this album i thought they were a new band i had no idea that they had a previous album to this one. I had heard a few of Good Charlottes songs on the radio and Mtv , the box , smash hits etc. and i really liked them so i decided i was going to go and buy the singles seperately because i thought basically they would be the only decent songs on the album. I thought that the album would have the few good songs on it .. Lifestyles of the rich and the famous, the anthem , girls and boys and the young and the hopeless and then the rest of the album would be rubbish, but i took the risk and bought it and i was so wrong this album is great and the songs released from the album are no longer my favourites. ...If you've read my review for Good Charlotte Young and the not so Hopeless, you'll know that I haven't been a Good Charlotte fan since this album came out in September 2000. IN fact I bought The Chronicles of Life and Death first, then Young and the Hopeless then I bought this album. But even though I bought them in that order I still think that this album is great, although they have changed slightly. The lyrics are better, the music sounds better and they have grown up so the music is changing to what they are listening to - not what they are listening to when they were 20. My personal favourites from this album are; Waldorf Worldwide (track 2), The Motivation Proclamation (track 3), East Coast Anthem (track 3), I heard you (track 9), The Click (track 10), Let me go (track 12) and the bonus track - which is on after Change - called... ...I write this as an 18 yr old who owns the album. Now I get that fact out of the way because all you ever hear these days (largely due to the number of copy-cat bands) is 'good charlotte are pop music for 12yr olds'. I have a problem with that statement - firstly no music in this genre is specifically aimed at any particular age group and secondly it isn't pop music. Good Charlotte's two main members, Benji and Joel Madden wrote this record with the aim of helping their fans get through the bad times that they are going through, and of which the Madden twins had already experienced themselves. So for anyone who has seen Good Charlotte at anytime, forget the 'fake' image and listen to the meaningful lyrics of these 14 fantastic songs. ...What a deprived childhood I must have had, for I cannot remember reading any book back then, that was ever as enthralling and enchanting as 'Charlottes Web'. Of course I had heard of it, just never read it. So when I came across it in the book store, I decided to read it. O.K, at nearly 32 years old, you may be thinking I'm a little too old for children books, but not so. To read a book like this was like a breath of fresh air, and even had a profound effect on me, as I shall explain later. So what's it all about? Fern Arable is a little girl who lives with her parents and her brother Avery on a farm somewhere in America. ...It's a credit to a book and it's author when you can read it, re-read it, write a long essay for A level coursework on it and still love it. While people tend to see Jane Eyre as Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece, I think that this is a better novel, a better story and shows what a talented write Charlotte is. It's a shame I could only give it 5 stars - it's worth more. What struck me most is the feminism in this novel, especially when the independent Shirley is contrasted with Caroline, who worries about becoming an old maid. It's vital to remember that Charlotte was writing in one of the most anti-feminist eras of history and that even the relatively-mild Jane Eyre was criticised for having a female character with strong emotion and opinions.
