Advantages: Impassioned Vocals
Disadvantages: takes time to sink in

...After the multi million sales of Nevermind, its abvious tha Kurt purposefully took an anti-commercial frame of mind with the follow up, with tracks such as Rape Me and Tourettes not very suited to afternoon FM radio ! Althouugh pretty much all the tracks on Nevermind could hav ebeen singles ( and that's not a derogatory comment) this album is a much darker affair, with even more downbeat lyrics. Despite its anti commercial nature it did still feature some of Kurts most touching vocals on tracks such as Pennyroyal Tea and All Apologies standing out particularly. A great album, but it'll certainly take a lot more time to sink in than Nevermind. Worth the wait though !... Read review

Advantages: A brand new direction for Radiohead
Disadvantages: Not particularly commercial

...This album is a mile away from OK computer, The Bends and Pablo Honey. If you ever laid your hands on the Airbag / how am I driving? EP then you will probably recognise the sound a little better. What is really astonishing is that Radiohead (of all people) have started using techno in their tracks. Its a brilliant, beautiful album: not as commercial as in the past, but Radiohead don't need to be commercial anymore! Some of the sounds reminded me of Super Furry Animals's "Guerilla": the melancholy, psychedelic techno: samples of some truly bizarre sounds. It seems that Radiohead have decided that now they have achieved commercial success, they are willing to put this on the line in order to produce a really experimental album. ...This summer's Batman has a new face (Val Kilmer), a new girlfriend (Nicole Kidman), a new sidekick (Chris O'Donnell, playing Robin), and two new villains (Carrey and Tommy Lee-Jones) to battle. Though the series has never been worthy of the hype it has generated, this one's pretentious aspects are transparent enough that you can enjoy the movie for the slick, stupid, self-referential commercial that it is. For once, nobody will believe the lie that a film about a comic book character adds up to a grand artistic vision; that's a blessing that makes this picture the lesser of the three evils.... ...What a great place! History, art, jazz clubs, pubs, bars, a huge castle, friendly - if busy - people, an excellent subway system and the whole city is reasonably priced. However, one of the first impressions of this supposedly quaint ex-communism country is how commercial it's becoming. Lots of business conferences everywhere, plenty of BMWs and Mercedes, and the national costume seems to be a mobile phone! This minor observation aside, Prague is a delicious city and one to be savoured for at least three days. Make sure you buy the bohemian souvenirs on the Charles Bridge - they are excellent value.... ...'Make money via the internet', I heard someone say. Great, I thought. This is just what I need. Some extra income which I could badly do with, all for doing what I would normally do. It sounded too good to be true. I arrived at Adsenger.com, taken in my their promising of $10 a commercial. When you look at their site, even the brightest bulb in the box could be forgiven for believing that they are soon going to make mega bucks. Sadly, with adsenger, that isn't the case. The concept of Adsenger is simple - you'll sign up and download the Adsenger bar. This is displayed in your system tray and then it will flash when there is an advert to view. If you choose to view the advert, you will be payed anywhere between 5 cents and 10 dollars. They promise you that the money you'll make will soon build up and you can't help beliving your going... Advantages: Guarantees independence.

...At the risk of drawing a lot of ire here, I want to put the arguments for the license fee. As a point of interest, I should first of all declare that as a freelance journalist I do do quite a lot of work for the Beeb, but that equally I work for the World Service, which ISN'T funded by the license fee, but by the foreign office. That said, I think it's hard to appreciate from outside the bbc just what the license fee does. Its most important function is as a guarantor of independence. I have worked on so many papers which are commercial, in which the entire thrust of the coverage has come from a commercial motive rather than a news value one. This means that if you think Madonna's wedding will sell more papers, you basically have to put it on the cover, or lead your news bulletin with it. The BBC is free from that, thanks... Read review

...I am the type of person that is always late and in a rush, so just like the girls in the commercials I need a nail polish that dries – fast. Yes, after seeing all those cheesy commercials I fell for it. I had to go out and buy a pot of this brilliant concoction. It seemed perfect for this girl who’s always on the go. Or was it? I bought a pot and decided to put some on my nails immediately. I was pleasantly surprised. It managed to dry in one minute flat. Just like the commercial. I decided to do some work and ended up smudging the nail polish, it actually hadn’t dried. I was utterly shocked as the bottle and commercial claims it dries in one minute flat. ...Built by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Flat Eric was a low-tech, yellow puppet character from Levi's commercials for Sta-Prest One Crease Denim Clothing. He would ride with his friend Angel in California, wanted by the police. His name comes from an idea for a commercial that included having a car run over his head and flattening it. The idea was not used but the name stuck. He was featured in the music video for "Flat Beat" by French artist Mr. Oizo and he also appeared as a prop in series 1 of the 2001-2003 BBC comedy The Office. In 2004, he co-starred with David Soul in a TV advert for Auto Trader magazine. He was based on a puppet called Stephane , that was similar but with ears. Stephane appeared in some short films by Mr Oizo. Flat Eric was made by Janet Knechtel for Creature Shop, in the UK and was performed by Drew Massey... Read review

...Optout is really about what inernet started about...no spam, no commercials, just anarchy and sharing if you want to. It is free, and that helps, but what's more important, the program is so simle and easy to use, it doesn't eat your diskspace or your memory, it just does the job. And thoroughly, i must add. The first time i ran optout i got 15, i repeat, fifteen backdoors notifications on my computer. Optout removed it and now i have optout silently on the background, without any irritation, it never pops up, but scans my computer everytime i reboot or startup. It sounds like a commercial, i know, but its free, and small, and very helpful. The gibson corporation sends you a newsletter... don't get scared, they only send it if they got really important news, or new material, and it's all free, without commercials, banners, or sneaky...
