Compaq Evo N600c little soldier!
Review of Compaq Evo Notebook N600c - PIII-M 1.2 GHz - 14.1" TFT by
gt5952
Advantages: Durable, loads of fixes on the hp site, quite nifty for its age
Disadvantages: just getting on a bit
...disk can be removed without removing the chasis etc etc.
With a simple cooling system (As in one way) cleaning the gunk out of the cooling passages is easy with a domestic vaccum.
It boasts quite a few specifications, which still sound ok, even though its massively out of date:
* Mobile Intel Pentium III-M 1.2 GHz processor
* 14.1-inch SXGA+ or 14.1-inch XGA display
* 4.8 lb/2.2 kg weight
* 256-MB (133 MHz), upgradeable to 1024 MB
* Up to 40-GB SMART hard drive
* 32 MB graphics intergrated
* User removable hard drive
* Mini PCI modem and integrated NIC
* Full-size keyboard
* Infra Red unit fixed on the front
* Over 3.5 hours of battery life (Normal conditions)
* Magnesium display enclosure
* Common docking solutions across Armada E and M and most Evo series notebooks...

Compaq Evo N800 lasts and lasts and lasts
Review of Compaq Evo Notebook N800v - P4-M 2 GHz - 15" TFT by
JustPMit
Advantages: Reliable, Durable, Great display, Portable desktop
Disadvantages: None
...Nearly 4 years ago I bought myself my first well known laptop after 3 lots of non branded ones. There is a world of difference and with careful selection I ended up with the Compaq Evo N800. What a break that turned out to be.
First things first - the screen is superb with top laptop resolution rather than the crappy max of 1280xnothing offered by most other models out there even today. 1400 x 1050 gives too small a font some might say. Load of rubbish. This screen has the best viewability I've ever witnessed by which I mean that it's easily readable from any angle in front of the screen. No, it's not widescreen but don't let that put you off.
Battery time is a solid 2-3 hours depending on activity and even after 4 years of the same battery it's still the same.
Layout of ports etc is pretty standard and the only thing...

Compaq Evo D310
Review of Compaq Evo D310 - C 1.8 GHz by
colin272363
Advantages: Fairly fast not bad memory size
Disadvantages: Pricey and only a small monitor ....
...O.k this hot looking package has a black and silver mini tower and is really good for use in an office. It comes with a matching keyboard that’s really slim and stylish. The key board comes with several hot keys that you can programme to open up your email or favourite websites. The package also includes a black and silver S5500CRT monitor. I found the PC to be pretty easy when setting up and ive had some 'gone wrong' incidents where i made use of a good recovery disk that was included to reinstall my operating system and erase the problem.
The babe comes with a 2.4 GHZ Intel Pentium 4 central processor unit and a decent amount of 256MB SDRAM (Although a bit more would be better, also static ram is not as good as DDR dynamic RAM). The monitor has a high resolution despite its size and gives out good colours with reasonable graphical...

Review of Compaq Evo Notebook N1005v - Athlon XP 1.5 GHz - 14.1" TFT by
querth
Advantages: 'Different' styling
Disadvantages: Fragile in places, Athlon models run very hot
...The company I work for runs a fleet of 120 of these laptops, which are now just over a year old.
So have any gone wrong?
Of the 120 around 30 have been returned at some point for warranty repairs, though many of these returns were as a result of the laptop being dropped!
There have been a few hard disk problems and one or two have had a problem with the connection to the screen around the hinge. Also a weak point has been the clip which retains the battery - allowing the battery to fall out with obvious result when not plugged into the mains!
The biggest problem has been with the power supplies, wrapping the lead around the unit has caused many to fail and these aren't covered by warranty. Fortunately one of the 'universal' laptop power supplies works perfectly as these are half the price of the official Compaq spare part...

Compaq D510 - solid corporate PC
Review of Compaq Evo D510 - P4 2.4 GHz by
judson
Advantages: Flexible, Robust, Easy to service
Disadvantages: No USB ports on front
...As with many Compaq models you have the option of setting up your PC as a tower or dektop, and this Evo is one. In addition, you are also able to change the position of the CD/DVD & Floppy drives as required. So whether the case is standing on edge or lying on its side, the CD-ROM and DVD drives have their typical horizontal placement.
HP also includes an extensive array of sophisticated manageability tools for system administrators, the Intelligent Manageability software suite encompasses tools for such remote management activities as system diagnostics via a Web browser, system wake-up, and the ability to disable USB and serial ports and to lock down the BIOS to secure boot-up sequences. The keyboard has programmable hot-keys for accessing the Internet.
The base configuration of the D510 has integrated graphics. And for businesses...

Compact Compaq
Review of Compaq Evo D510 e-PC - C 1.8 GHz by
pjwalker
Advantages: Reliable, quiet and space-efficient.
Disadvantages: Not much room for expansion.
...there's nothing stopping you.
The price point may be anywhere in the £500-£700 range depending on where you buy, so it's not going to upset your accountant either. All of this along with Compaq's highly reputable support makes it eminently suitable for corporate users. It's not aimed at gamers, it's a business machine and does exactly what it would say on the tin if it came in one.
I'm sure there are many who prefer the flexibility of a big-box PC, I spent years upgrading my previous machines at almost bi-monthly intervals, but right now I'm perfectly happy with my Evo. Of course it depends what you're looking for, but if that's reliability, portability and Compaq quality you don't have to look much further....

HP NC4000
Review of HP Compaq Business Notebook nc4000 - Pentium M 1.5 GHz - 12.1" TFT by
jjhorton1989
Advantages: Good BAttery Life
Disadvantages: easy to scratch
...The HP nc 4000 notebook is highly mobile and has a very good battery life, with the battery lasting over 3 hours on one train journey.
The notebook runs xp and office applications with easy and can cope with PowerPoint presentations, but lacks the speed for anyone who may want to play games on it.
There are 2 USB ports on the nc 4000 which is not really enough when one is taken up by a flash drive, the there is only one left. so if you wish to use an external keyboard and mouse both of these usb ports will be used as there is no PS2 port to plug them in.
The lack of a optical drive can sometimes be a problem as not all programs install easily over a network.
There is only one speaker on the notebook which does not produce the best sound, and can only be disabled if the sound is muted, as the headphone port is a line out...

HP NC6220 Business Laptop
Review of HP Compaq Business Notebook nc6220 - Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz - 14.1" TFT by
la_chique
Advantages: Slimline, many different options and room for expansion
Disadvantages: not too many, mainly the price issue
...settings in proportion to the screen resolutions, (and provided that you have the correct graphics drivers installed, as problems with large screen resolutions occur from either not having a specified graphics driver installed and just using the default driver, which will only produce around 640x480 pixels and maybe 16-bit color.)
The video adapter used by the laptop is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 which has up to 128MB of shared system memory.
Processor/memory
------------------------------------------------------
The laptop has a Intel Pentium M processor, 1.5Ghz with 1MB level 2 cache. It has a 400Mhz front side bus speed, and comes with 512 MB ram (upgradeable to 2GB DDR 2 SDRAM which makes it fast, and gives it plenty of room for upgrade in the future.

Great business machine
Review of Compaq Evo D510 Ultra-Slim - P4 2 GHz by
pob0782
Advantages: small form factor, cheap, fast, reliable, good support
Disadvantages: lack of space to upgrade
...When Compaq was bought out by HP, there was some concern as to the loss of the Compaq brand and a reduction in quality of desktop and server machines.
I am pleased to say that this has not happened. The Compaq Evo D510 is a worthy machine and packs a lot of power into a small space.
The basic specs of the machine are:
2.4GHz Pentium 4, 256MB, 40GB, CD-ROM, onboard sound, AGP Video, LAN, Modem, black case, TFT monitor
Available from £600+vat (even PC World are keeping prices on this quite low) the machine definitely has a lot of features for the price. Although not designed as a gaming machine, the PC will perform (though you may want to change the graphics card for the more demanding games).
The machine comes with a return to base warranty and this is a good all round solution for most people. If you want to upgrade...
