Dental Nursing
Review of Dentistry by
memphisto_chick
Advantages: Opportunities can be good
Disadvantages: Poor employers, poor pay if not qualified
...I don't think Ciao likes me anymore...they don't reply when I suggest a new category, what have I done that is so bad? OK, I'll take it that Ciao just has problems at this time, I'll leaving them quietly in a corner and get on and write this review...
As a qualified dental nurse, dental therapist and assessor for trainee dental nurses, I get asked a lot about dentistry, toothache, oral health but I very rarely get asked about my job and what my roles involve. I decided to write this review as a promotion for dental nursing predominantly and also to show people it's not all about holding the suction pipe in someone's mouth!

Something Between My Teeth
Review of Superdrug Dental Floss by
EmmyW
Advantages: see opinion
Disadvantages: see opinion
...Is it only me that doesn't get on with dental floss?! Every six months, I visit my dentist and every time he examines my teeth and says "have you been flossing?" all I can do, while he furtles about with his scraper and mirror is shake my head in shame.
Every single time I come out of that dentist, I head to the nearest Superdrug and pick up some floss, usually their own brand 'cos it tends to be cheaper and maybe I know its going to end up at the back of the bathroom cabinet! I'm full of good intentions, and that evening, before bed I unravel a piece, perhaps as long as the Great Wall of China and get to work. Maybe it's me, maybe my teeth are too close together, but as soon as I get the floss between my teeth it lodges and just won't move! Superdrug reckon their floss is waxed so surely it should glide between the teeth? Not mine...

IS IT A BIRD..? OR A PLANE..? NO...IT'S.....
Review of Braun Humming BIRD by
Paul99ine
Advantages: one handed flossing
Disadvantages: expensive
...What on earth is this?..................My exact words when my daughter in law gave me the packet containing the BRAUN ORAL B HUMMINGBIRD.
Definitions of the word Oral are:-
Adj: using speech rather than writing
Noun: an examination conducted by word of mouth
Adj: of or relating to or affecting or for use in the mouth
Definition of the word Hummingbird is:-
Noun: tiny American bird having brilliant iridescent plumage and long slender bills.
Very little help there!!
Closer inspection of the packet informed me that this was in fact a vibrating flosser/dental pick….hmm.
I should explain that I am just a teensy bit fanatical about keeping my teeth in pristine condition and I always floss my teeth after every brushing and I carry toothpicks in my handbag so that I can have a quick 'pick' after a meal or snack when we're away from...

Review of Whiskas Dentabits by
purdy
Advantages: Cats ador them
Disadvantages: None
...of nasties around the teeth such as plaque or tartare as humans get. They also help to keep the gums healthy too. The whiskas people advice you to give cats over the age of 10 months old a minimum of 8 "combs" a day. Allegedly to help in cat dental treatment but probably so you come back and buy more and boost their profits!
I picked them up in Tescos when l was grocery shopping, but l am 100% positive that they are available in all other supermarkets and petshops too. They cost me around 99pence - not at all bad - especially because she enjoys them so much.
So if you care about your cats dental health and are looking for a treat to spoil your little darling why not give Whiskas dentabites a whirl!...

What a cracking little bird!
Review of Oral-B Hummingbird by
bertie72
Advantages: Can be used any time, any place, any where
Disadvantages: None that i can think of
...spaces.
As well as the flossette heads, you can also get the tooth picks,
these are blue in colour and are roughly the same size as a match stick only slightly thicker, these are placed in the slot which is located just above the blue band on the humming bird, the flossette head also go in the same slot.
Out of all the oral health products we sell in my surgery, these are one of our best sellers, we sell them at the grand sum of £4.50, we also sell the replacement flossette/picks.
Being a dental nurse has it's advantages, as we get some freebies when any new products flood the general market, and the H/B was one of them, im dismayed to say i could never get the hang of flossing with dental tape/floss, i always felt like i was trying to eat my own hand, whilst trying to get the stupid floss arond my teeth.
So what a pleasure it was to use...

Works on batteries and vibrates
Review of Sonicare Electrical Toothbrush by
Chewa
Advantages: Handy, good effect
Disadvantages: Expensive
...'s ultrasonic scaler.
The theory goes on to say that this allows a measure of cleaning beyond the reach of the brush, which is ideal for the interdental areas.
To use is simplicity itself. Pick it up from its holder/recharger, apply a small dob of paste and stick it in your gub! (Hope this technical dental language is not too much for some) Then switch it on.
Don’t switch it on before putting it in your mouth or you’ll effectively artex your face! Its also a good idea to keep your lips sealed when using it to prevent the “rabid dog “ look.
It can be painful if used for too long and against sensitive dentine. There is a small ring to drop the level of effect and you should use this at first.
Personally I find the handle a bit unwieldy, but the cleaning effect when held gently against the teeth is ok. It beeps for quarters...

Criss-Cross at a cost
Review of Oral B CrossAction by
magicloudz
Advantages: Keeps teeth clean
Disadvantages: Pricier than other brands
...The Oral B CrossAction first came to my attention in 2002 after a period of a couple of years where I had not been using satisfactory toothbrushes. On my dentist’s recommendation, I picked one of these up, and was I glad I did? You bet.
Available from some dental practices and from major supermarkets, the CrossAction retails at a hefty £2.99 – about double what I would normally be willing, or expect, to pay for a toothbrush. It is available in a variety of different colours, the secondary colour always being white, whereas the primary colour can be chosen from the range: I have used blue and lime green. These toothbrushes are packaged in a plastic-covered blue cardboard, typical of the Oral B product range.
So, it is more expensive than competitors’ products, but what does it do to deserve the higher price tag...

Eucryl Toothpaste - GENIUS!
Review of Eucryl Toothpowder by
Cinders0
Advantages: Removes stains brilliantly. Smokers this one is for you! Easy on the pocket.
Disadvantages: Hard to obtain, Not as minty flavoured as say Colgate so best used in conjunction with another toothpaste
...I don't know what ingredients Eurcryl put in their toothpaste, neither do I much care. It actuallyworks and that is all that matters to me!
My mother - a 30/40 a day smoker and myself - a 20 a day swear by this toothpaste.
If you can't find this in your local Savers, I would recommend visiting your local chemist. This is where we buy ours from (Thanks Mr Baulm!) - it varies in price you can pick up for usually just over a pound and some shops sell for around £2/£3.
It doesn't froth as much as normal toothpaste and your mouth doesn't feel as clean or smell as minty (and Im talking about both the original and the freshmint flavours here - tube and the tub) so I tend to use it in conjunction with colgate/or another brand of toothpaste for a fresh mouth, but it does remove the stains quite like anything else I have come across - and I...

Stix for Stress Free De-Scaling!
Review of Pedigree Denta Stix by
suesie
Advantages: Makes for a happy dog and a happier owner,
Disadvantages: Slightly expensive but worth every penny
...along with a further saga of Woody’s woes once Ciao have added it). In any case it’s a price worth paying when one considers the possible alternative …. expensive dental treatment. Even 8 years ago the teeth extraction and antibiotic treatment cost me over £300.
The Pedigree website does not actually claim that these are an alternative to brushing, although their advert implies it. However I haven’t used a toothbrush on Woody since starting to use this product but the vet always compliments him ( not me) on his white teeth during his annual check up and, so far, (touch wood) he has not suffered any recurrence of the gum trouble. Now he has reached the ripe old age of 11 years, I don’t want to trouble him further with that spikey oral implement! Judging by his reaction when I pick up my own toothbrush I am sure he still remembers the trauma...

How to floss with superdrug
Review of Superdrug Dental Floss by
l1nda
Advantages: clean teeth!
Disadvantages: can fray easily
...I havent been back to superdrug to check if this is still the case, the container is labeled as 'dental tape' which is completely different to dental floss.
****updated by popular demand as to the difference between tape and floss ****
Dental floss is like a tiny thread and tape is an extremely thin ribbon. Both come on a long spool that Im sure would join Lands end and John O'Groats unwound.
Floss is generally recommended for most as tape is more expensive and hard. It is however more useful if your teeth are closer together or youve had a lot of work on them, as it will not fray, tear or shred. I do find though that as the tape is relatively sharp you have to be more careful not to cut your gums.
Also, to clear up another difference, this floss is unwaxed. Unwaxed flosses pick up more debris so you spend less time flossing, however...
