Top Class SF
Review of 2001 - A Space Odyssey DVD by
sjm6
Advantages: Superb story, incredible cinematics - has aged well
Disadvantages: Lacks action if that's what you're after
...I have always been a fan of Stanley Kubrik and Science Fiction so if you put the two together then how can you go wrong.
This film contains some of the most breathtaking SF moments, even more astounding considering the 32 years that have passed since this was filmed. The sequence of the hostess carrying a tray and rotating slowly in zero gravity is quite wonderful even after many watchings. The interior of the discovery moving around the interior of the 'donut' is stunning.
This is not the film you want to watch if your idea of SF cinema is space battles, furry aliens and laser guns but if you want intelligent thought provoking drama then watch this.
Mind you I shouldn't think there will be many SF fans out there that haven't already seen this....

Enter the Forensic World
Review of Channel 5 - C.S.I by
jilmil
Advantages: Very Scientific
Disadvantages: Maybe gory for some
...I found was that there was not much emphasis on the personal life of the investigators... there is minimum involvement between the audience and the investigators except for a few episodes like Warren's gambling problem and how they tackled it, Catharine being a busy mom and not being able to spend more time with her daughter, etc.... They have tried to blend in the investigator's personal lives with the crimes and associated with their personal fears in certain cases.

the write stuff
Review of Writers Handbook 2000 - Barry Turner by
w1ldrover
Advantages: Very Comprehensive
Disadvantages: spoilt for choice
...As a writer I need to know where to target the things I write and consequently I need a reference book to guide me to those targets. Enter Writers Handbook 2001 stage left.
A comprehensive tome which not only lists all the relevant contacts a writer will ever need, but is also packed with competent advice and information on topics like Freelance writers rates, screenwriting (by Lynda le Plante), copyright laws and income tax.
Writers Handbook will not get that publishing deal signed for you, but it will tell you which Agents and Publishers are more likely to be interested in your work than others. It is still best to check out for yourself in libraries and newsagents to check if your work is the sort of thing that the people you are targeting like to publish.
The book caters for all writers - novels, poetry, drama, etc...

In Memory Of Joan Sims,1930-2001
Review of BBC1 - Last of the Blonde Bombshells by
KarenUK
Advantages: great cast, enjoyable, entertaining
Disadvantages: only a one-off production
...Joan Sims (1930-2001) died on Wednesday 27th June aged 71. She was one of my favourite actresses, as I am a big fan of the Carry On films and have been since I was a young child in the 1970s.
The Last Of The Blonde Bombshells was her last professional acting role. She was just as brilliant as ever and will be sadly missed...
ORIGINAL OPINION ~
My main reason for watching The Last Of The Blonde Bombshells was because I am a fan of the Carry On films and I was looking forward to seeing Joan Sims in another television role. It was good to see she still has a great talent and a real charisma on screen.
The cast was an assembly of many well known ladies 'of a certain age' - Dame Judi Dench, June Whitfield, Cleo Laine, Leslie Caron, Billie Whitelaw - which meant it was quite an unusual television production. It was refreshing to see...

Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World
Review of The Lost World DVD by
Mel27
Advantages: Good acting, great story
Disadvantages: Some violence
...The other "Lost World" category featured pics of the Bob Hoskins BBC drama but was full of Jurassic Park 2 reviews so I've added this review here.
This great BBC adaptation of Conan Doyle's famous novel was on TV over Christmas 2001 and the DVD and video were released about six months later.
The basic story is that it's the early 1900s and academic Professor George Challenger (Bob Hoskins) believes there is a "lost world" where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures still roam, even though they died out 65 million years ago. He leaves his museum in London and goes to the rainforests of South America in search of this mythical land. He takes sceptical rival academic Professor Leo Summerlee (James Fox) with him as well as hunter Lord Roxton who funds the trip(Tom Ward) and journalist Edward Malone (Matthew Rhys). They follow a map...

Family Affairs
Review of In The Bedroom DVD by
l-m-n-o-p
Advantages: Outstanding performances, extremely powerful
Disadvantages: Slightly slow and drifts towards the end
...In The Bedroom is a quality drama examining one family's relationships following a devastating act of violence. Made in 2001, it was nominated for 5 Oscars, for its excellent performances, as well as for Best Picture and Original Screenplay, and it is particularly impressive considering that it was director Todd Field's first film. He has since directed the film Little Children, which was also nominated for awards, and was, according to many, one of 2006's best films.
Matt (Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth (Sissy Spacek) live in New England with their son, Frank (Nick Stahl). He's about to go to college, but his girlfriend (Marisa Tomei) is much older, and comes with two young sons and an abusive ex-husband. Ruth isn't too keen on their relationship, but Matt is happy enough to let them continue. After all, Frank insists...

Say Goodbye then slowly fade away...
Review of Night and Day by
zippy003
Advantages: Unique, great characters
Disadvantages: Time slot!
...Night and Day is the newest "soap" to our screens and was launched on ITV1 in November 2001 and was shown 4 times a week, Tuesday to Thursday at 5:05pm and a late night omnbibus edition at 11pm on Thursdays.
Unfortunately, due to "low ratings" ITV1 have axed the teatime slot so now it is only shown once a week on Thursdays.
I wouldnt really consider Night and Day a soap as peoples image of a soap in the UK are things like Eastenders and Coronation Street. I would consider it more of a drama and that is how it should have been launched. A drama, not another soap.
Night and Day is set on Thornton Street a fictional street in Greenwich and it is based around the lives of 4 main families, the Harpers, Wells, Armstrong, Radcliffe, and the Brakes.
Since the launch of Night and Day, the main story has been set around the disappearance of Jane...

Good but won't warm me to the likes of Westlife
Review of Popstars by
DanClegg
Advantages: Entertaining, compelling, something to look out for.
Disadvantages: Reveales how cynical and appearance based the music industry is.
...I'll be the first to admit that I don't like manafactured groups {see my Westlife reviews for proof} - Popstars is fascinating to me not just for it's high drama and sometimes cringeworthy stars but I'm also inerested in how these groups come about. But let's start at the beginning.
Three pop pundits, Nigel Lythgoe, Nicki Chapman and Paul Adam started a search for a new all singing, all dancing pop group. Open auditions started a few months back all around the UK. This in my view created some classic moments of TV, which will surely feature prominently in a 2001 review show. Yes, you guessed, some of the "singers" on display were truly abysmal murdering Ricky Martin {not diffficult really}, Robbie Williams, S Club 7 and Celine Dion - but also in these early stages some true characters emerged - who could forget Clare Freeland, cocky...

The film of 2001
Review of Pearl Harbor DVD by
tiegan
Advantages: A great story, action packed, with that love thang for the girls (hehe)
Disadvantages: A little bit off in its reality check, but who cares
...Harbor. Out of this 3 hour long film we sat through an exhausting 50 minutes of sheer action, horror, drama and shockingly frank showing of what happened. I have to say that as many times as I felt I shouldn't watch, I was compelled to look harder at what I was being shown. After the bombing, the love triangle that was growing more difficult for Rafe and Danny to control was ended as America went to war with Japan, and a top secret mission is undertaken.
As you can tell from this review, I really enjoyed this film. A total emotional rollercoaster! I was smiling in parts and in tears many other times.
Now, I realise that they got things from history wrong! SO WHAT!! Call it artistic licence! If your not an officanado about the war, you wont know what was wrong, and I know that even if I did, It wouldn't have mattered. A great film that should...
