This is the worst phone I've ever owned
Review of Sony Ericsson P910i by
josephgreer
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Worst phone I've ever owned
...get out of a poor reception area (elevator), it takes about 35 seconds before the phone will register that the reception is better. Even if it is in an area with good reception, it will not allow you to make a call unless it has refreshed it's reception rating.
10. Web Surfing doesn't work: I was able to surf the web maybe 10 times before I started getting errors from the operating system. I called support and they encouraged me to install the older OS version. This worked for a while, then the errors started again. Go ahead and google this error. You'll see tons of them and no support from the vendor on how to correct it: "Program Closed: Program Main Reason Code KERN-EXEC Reason number 3". When you press continue, you get the Oh-so-informative "Information: Unknown Error" message.
11. Texts lost mid-stream: If you...

Useful but variable accuracy
Review of Braun Thermoscan by
nickhurst
Advantages: Extremely quick results
Disadvantages: wide range of 'normal'
...like it.
The detector requires a clear run from the tympanic membrane to the tip of the 'scope' and this can be obscured by wax, or incorrect positioning. Hence a single operator should take all temperatures using a reproducible technique during a single illness, to avoid inter-user error. Furthermore, the manual states that tympanic measurements differ slightly from oral readings (which is quite true), and that all family members should take several baseline temperatures over several days to get a feel for what is normal for them. This is not really practical, given that most people buy one of these thermometers when they need it, rather than in advance (or is that just me).
The 'normal range' quoted runs from 36 to 38.3, the latter I would consider to be a significant pyrexia and this can therefore lead to confusion when the temperature...

the air that we breathe
Review of BOC Group by
PatricHelbig
Advantages: good career prospects, national company
Disadvantages: poor pay, stressfull, lack of support
...After finishing my degree I decided to work for a while to have a change of scene and get some money. My agency found a job at BOC Special Products for me, and I applied successfully.
When I received the contract I noticed a discrepancy in salary and different job title to that in the profile I had been given by my agent. It worked out that BOC supplied the agency with the job profile of another position, and the manager in question hasn't justified that error to the day.
Not having had many options I decided to take the job on. All colleagues where really nice and welcoming. My training was very good, as it was job based with personal coaching from a colleague.
Soon after some downsides of the job became more dominant. Being in a national customer service call centre there was a lot of pressure on answering the telephones...

SimTower - Elevator Ecstasy
Review of SimTower (PC) by
Terri1954
Advantages: Challenging, and will provide hours of fun
Disadvantages: A bit repetetive, and can be annoying
...This was the second game I ever bought, and it has given me many hours of enjoyment, as well as much frustration. I have no problems building lovely towers filled with offices, hotel rooms, condos, shops, retaurants, etc, but I can never get the elevators in the right places. A large tower can have as many as 100,000 occupants, and be 100 floors high, but you are allowed just 24 elevators, which can cover only 30 floors each. As the Sims much prefer using elevators to stairs or escalators, there is always someone who complains that the nearest elevator is still too far away. This game is fun - lots of fun. It's also extremely annoying at times. Trying to please several thousand occupants in one tower block is almost impossible! The sound effects are fairly good, although they can be a bit repetetive, and the graphics are good. It...

Good on Windows 98 but less good on Windows 2000.
Review of HP ScanJet 4200C by
dvdlcs
Advantages: Quick (on Windows 98 at least). Good quality scans.
Disadvantages: Windows 2000 (lack of) support. No power switch.
...permissions or privileges” type of error. Therefore, need to elevate your user to Administrator privileges, install the drivers as that user, reboot the machine and restore your user account to User privileges.
Even then, it kind of works, and despite the faster hardware that I was using, seems to run a lot slower under Windows 2000 than it did under Windows 98, with significant pauses before starting the scan and after completing the scan but before rendering the image available.
Perhaps with the vast driver library for Windows XP the scanner will simply plug in and go, but I haven’t tried this. Not tried a Mac (what’s that?) and my Linux machine isn’t used for multimedia activities.
The only other down side to it, is a lack of a power switch on the hardware itself. I like to switch the peripherals off that I am not using and this is something...

HITCHCOCKS SPELL BOUND
Review of Spellbound DVD by
JeffreyB
Advantages: A classic.
Disadvantages: A little dated.
...with an awkward opening sequence, complete with "explanations" on the screen. These follow a rather dull introduction to the credits and cast backed by a tree in autumn wind and a quote from Shakespeare. The film quickly moves into the development of relationships between doctors and patients concerning character analysis at the asylum. About 40 minutes into the film Hitchcock appears in a cameo coming out of an elevator at the Empire hotel carrying a violin case and smoking a cigarette. The now amateurishly filmed skiing scene with unconvincing backdrops. Gregory Peck is the newly appointed director of a mental health asylum, but his behaviour pricks the suspicions of an icy Ingrid Bergman. Is he the troubled amnesiac, or a psychotic killer.
***THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE***
The legendary Salvador Dali designed dream sequence allegedly used very...

Made In Scotland - An Irish Gem
Review of Mullingar Golf Club by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: See text of opinion
Disadvantages: See text of opinion
...straightforward opening par-4 of only 338 yards, you might be forgiven for thinking you were in for a fairly easy round. That is, until you step onto the second tee!
This is a formidable par-3 for even the finest of players.
Measuring 198 yards, you are hitting a lot of club from a high teeing area to a highly perched elevated green. There are trees both right and left, and the green is fronted by a ditch, and surrounded on all sides by bunkers.
You can’t even take the option of hitting it long, as there is a bank of bushes and a ditch all along the back edge of the green.
My usual shot here is a soft fade (left to right spin) with something from a five wood to a three or four iron, to try and get some height on the ball in order that it will land softly on the putting surface.
There is no room for error if you are to have any chance...

Take a ride down the Ciao Superhighway
Review of 10 Worst Films of the Decade by
mortimus
Advantages: I am driving really fast
Disadvantages: I haven't got a licence
...that that they were almost as bad as Ed Wood in film making except they had money and lots of it!!! If you look at the film at certain I think you can seeing the actors looking totally ashamed by what dialogue is coming out of their mouths!
With a quick push to the accelerator I perform a quick U-turn and I am out of there, and back on the Superhighway and nearly crashing as I see the next horror on my list of film atrocities.
BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY
This is comedy of errors where the error was to make the film! It stars Bryan Brown, Patsy Kensit, Patricia Hodge, Richard Wilson, Bronson Pinchot (The Bellboy) and Dudley Moore(I think they all needed the money!) The comedy of errors is caused by two factors:
1. The Bellboy is a total none English speaking incompetent (His Englich is worse than Manuels)
2. Bryan Brown, Dudley Moore and Richard Wilson...
