Saving Our Environment
Review of Geography & Environmental Management by
Yasinball
Advantages: Healthy, Quality of Life,
Disadvantages: Poor Health, low resources
...This Opinion is on Saving our Environment and Has nothing to do with Education Courses. I could not find the appropiate catagory. Thank you.
Pollution is not the only threat to the planet. Another concern is the exhaustiopn of the world's resources. Our lifestyle has resulted in the world's resources being used up so quickly that they could run out. The non-renewable resources that are thought to be running out include oil, gas and many minerals. Ciao members could help to save natural resources by recycling glass and paper, or turning off gas and electrical appliances when they are not in use. Small actions like this can have a positive effect when repeated by people on a national or global scale.
Other resources are being used up faster than they can be replaced. This includes trees. Timber has been used for centuries to build...

Precautionary Principle...?
Review of Who Killed The Electric Car? DVD by
Claiiiree
Advantages: Frightening and insightful look into an Environmental Conflict and Political Response
Disadvantages: Critics may consider it one sided
...stakeholders and a "David and Goliath" battle between ordinary people seeking greater Environmental Justice within that state.
Surprisingly for me, but the old footage in the film confirms it, 100 years ago there were far more electric cars than gas ones on the roads but by 1920 the internal combustion engine had control of the roads and many of the original electric cars can now only be found in museums. Of course since that time, there has been massive build up of pollution across major cities in the USA and indeed elsewhere and the resulting smog is a major environmental hazard. - hence the reason why the California Air Resources Board (CARB) led the way in the early 1990s by passing a law to say that all manufacturers had to produce some cars which had zero emissions.
Despite the obvious opinion of the director of the film, this documentary...

Possibly the best
Review of Star Trek 4 : The Voyage Home DVD by
CliveS
Advantages: Great end to the Spock story arc
Disadvantages: None - great fun film
...This films came on the back of environmental concerns in the 1980's. The story is excellent with our familiar crew flying back to Earth in their captured Klingon Bird of Prey (query - Why didn't starfleet arrest our heros on Vulcan). The time travel two minutes is weard to say the least but after that the films takes the viewer through the "primitive" 80's, a time when it could be considered odd for a lost Russian to ask the where abouts of Nuclear Warship!
The comic moments are plied on thickly with Shatner sharing his comic lines with many of the supporting cast - Scotty changing the engineering future, McCoy perfoming neural surgery, Checkov finding the USS Enterprise (aircraft carrier) etc.
The film concludes the Spock story arc begun by his "death" in Star Trek II. The late Mark Leonard makes a welcome guest appearance as Spock...

Gross exploitation of captive clientele
Review of Petrol Price Debate by
bwsr2
Advantages: None whatsoever
Disadvantages: Funds New Labour, palpably unfair to tax essential commodity
...Why does the UK have the most expensive petrol in the developed world, and what compensations do we receive in turn for our largesse?
The petrol crisis was a response to threefold pressures - Firstly, the greed of the Oil companies, never more clearly illustrated than by the decision of Esso to put up prices by twopence a litre during the middle of the debacle. Oil companies must shoulder their share of the blame. They are slow to communicate price fluctuations in what is a very volatile market, and when reductions have come they have been too little, too late.
Secondly, the influence of the 'media' and the tiny band of environmental evangelicals who bleat on about the 'Earth' being jeopardised by the combustion engine. These people invariably live in zone 1 of London, can rely on either the tube or night bus and have no worries about...

Global Warming; Are We Really to Blame?
Review of Is global warming an urgent danger? by
s_copsey
Advantages: Warmer Climate, Longer Summers
Disadvantages: Flooding, Sea Level Rises
...and particles released into the atmosphere from natural resources."
This statement shows that the IPCC acknowledge the fact that other natural processes contribute to climate change, yet they choose to conveniently exclude any actual statistics based on these natural influences. They are more than happy to provide us with graph after graph highlighting percentages of CO2 emissions generated by the various industrial sectors, but make no comparison of these percentages with those of the natural factors. This is because they simply don't want a graph demonstrating to the public that more than 99% of all greenhouse gas emissions are in fact caused by natural reoccurring processes and that humans actually can only be accountable for approximately 0.04%.
The Government influenced BBC is constantly providing us with news broadcasts and environmental...

The ice is coming!
Review of Fallen Angels - Michael Flynn, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle by
Coloneljohn
Advantages: A good and funny in places read
Disadvantages: A lot of people will not like this
...Here is a fine romp through a possible future.
synopsis
For more than twenty years now America has turned its back on Big Science Some technology is approved so long as it is appropriate technology.
Space exploration has been abandoned. So has Oil exploration. A government was voted into office in America that is devoted to saving the environment at what ever the cost. That cost includes a total control of day to day life, and a new ice age. But this is not the fault of the greens, It was all the fault of those goddam scientists as every body knows.
There is a small population of American and Russian astronauts trying to survive on the last space station, totally rejected by the mass of the Earth's peoples. Resources are scarce and any system is not totally closed. So some resources are required.
During a flight to scoop some much...

~~Listen, the ocean is talking to us!~~
Review of The Highest Tide - Jim Lynch by
digitalenvironmentalist
Advantages: A summer adventure read and with sense of humour
Disadvantages: Nothing, but It seems that there is a 'sequel' for this book
...we have to be more aware of what we are doing particularly those things that might have adverse impacts to the environment.
Finally, Jim Lynch’s work is an excellent story which captures the essence of our childhood: being young, sensitive, entrepreneurial, and playful. He tries to awakens the ‘child’ within us and reflects the wonderful happy memories of our lives. Every character in the story brings something special that touches our hearts, something that we could reflect on it especially about purpose of living. Through Miles character, being an intelligent, observant and adventurous young boy, lead us to understand that everything happens because of ‘reason’.
Jim also tackles very relevant environmental issue that our Mother Earth is facing today - degradation of marine resources. One of the major human activities that contribute...

When you Pray, Move your Feet..
Review of Inconvenient Truth, An (2006) by
Claiiiree
Advantages: Educational, Will spread the message far and wide
Disadvantages: None
...stars Al Gore giving a lecture on Climate Change to an unknown audience in an unnamed place, presumably in America as this film was made to target the American audience, although it is equally valid for Europeans and even people in developing countries, whose environmental footprints will be increasing as they consume more resources. Gore claims that he was first made aware of the "CO2" problem in the mid sixties, from a college lecturer, who had been compiling his own studies of the levels in the atmosphere, a pattern which has increased dramatically in a forty year period.
Coming off the back of Hurricane Katrina which destroyed New Orleans a year ago, Gore uses a mix of aerial photography (from space), simple trend graphs, diagrams and even cartoons to make his point in a way that almost anyone can understand. He has been doing...

Behind Lies Earth - Ahead Stands The Red Planet!
Review of Red Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson by
Rahielli
Advantages: Well written characters, lots of detail, entertaining and engrossing reading
Disadvantages: Book is long so paperbacks tend to get a broken spine.
...in the Capital series. He has also written at least 3 other novels and numerous short stories.
*******The Plot*******
Earth is over-crowded and its natural resources are becoming scarce. Science and the space program have advanced far enough that space travel to other planets is possible, and in fact, has already happened. John Boone has already walked on Mars in the year 2019. Now the next step is being taken and the First Hundred colonists are being sent to the Red Planet on a massive spaceship called the Ares. The year is 2027. These colonists are made up of the best and brightest in numerous sciences, engineers, and builders. Each of the First Hundred has a place in the colonization, and each has a specialty. It is their job to research and test the Martian soils and atmosphere, to find any natural resources, to study the Martian landscape...
