.... Examples include using a spoon to chip away at a wall and using part of a fan for climbing. One the best parts of the film is when is makes the 'dummy head' which he uses as part of his plan. He puts it in his bed whilst he escapes, so the wardens walking past do not notice that he has gone, as all they can see is his head. This leads up to one of the best bits of the film which is when the prison officers realise that he has gone in the morning when the lights are turned on! Overall the parts played by each of the cast are played perfectly and the story line is brilliant. The rock proves to be tough for Frank and the others but it's a shame that we will never know if in real life they made the escape or not. You can get this film from any DVD seller for £10 or less.... Read review

...will not tell you anything more about the story as it will spoil it for you as its basicaly on the attempts of the chickens to escape. The DVD has a load of extras e.g. the making of and the trailers. Money well worth spending its as good as Wallace and Grommet.... Read review

Advantages: Brilliant and Realistic tale of allied POWs courage and ingenuity inside Colditz Caslte.
Disadvantages: No special features - Bit of a shame - But it is an old film.

...Bensons is the place where I buy my DVDs (and occasionally videos too), and the reasons for this is that they are well priced, fast, and customer service is good too. There's none of this "we won't replace this DVD because it won't play on your player nonsense" that other e-retailers get up to. One thing that Bensons has been doing, which might have escaped everyone's notice, is a couple of free DVD promotions. In early August, they gave away a DVD movie completely for free - no P&P, no obligation to buy. Mine arrived within about 7 days. They did a similar sought of thing in September, though you had to buy something - then they gave you a Laurel & Hardy DVD for nought! Great stuff!... Read review

...This film needs itroduction. We are all aware of Steve 'The Cooler' McQueen's motorcycle escape attempt - but how many of you know that although he did not make the jump himself, he did chase himself! Absolutely true!! Mr. McQueen was an acomplished motor cycle rider in his day and used to indulge in a spot of racing. However, I digress. The film has been digitally remastered and released on DVD boasting Dolby Digital. Unfortunately, it is a mono soundtrack. Now, if you are like me and have a home cinema type sound set up at home, you may be disappointed by the quality. My Yamaha decoder has some preset programs, one of which is MONO MOVIE. So, maybe it is my amp or maybe the film, but it was not all it could be. The extras on this disc are limited to the 'Theatrical Trailer' and a making of sort of documentary which lasts... ...Don't you just love prison movies where the prisoners are trying to escape undetected? For me they make riveting television, so for that reason alone Escape from Alcatraz is great viewing, and one of the best prison movies around (apart from the classic The Shawshank Redemption). This film is based on the true story of prisoners who managed to escape from one of the most secure prisons in the world, Alcatraz. The prison obviously couldn't have been that secure if a couple of prisoners armed with a teaspoon and butter knife managed to escape, but I don't build prisons so I'm no expert. Alcatraz is no longer a prison but a rotting mass of concrete, and has become a rather popular tourist attraction off the coast of San Franscisco, with the visitors obviously trying to find the hole in which the prisoners escaped from (probably). Advantages: Another Toho movie on dvd

...This is truly one of my favorite Toho Studio's movies. Dr Who (not the one from the famous TV series) has created a robot called Mecha Kong to mine Element X out of a fissure deep within the ice and snow. However, due to technical difficulties that are not mentioned in the movie, Mecha Kong stops working and now Dr Who must now capture King Kong himself and try to get Kong to do his evil work in mining Element X from the ice and snow. Other Dai Kaiju appearing in this movie are Gorosaurus and I believe Manda, a sea serpent. Kong eventually escapes the captivity of Dr Who and is soon doing battle with Mecha Kong. The staff at Toho Studios really made this movie a cult classic. The fate of the world hangs in the balance as these two titans do battle with each other. ...Women are strange creatures. Any bloke reading that will know what I'm talking about but what forced me to say that now (and how does it relate to The great Escape)? When I asked Mrs TheNeil what she fancied watching, she quite surprisingly opted for The Great Escape. Huh? "But surely dear you mean Grease or some such other twaddle?". No, she was adamant, The Great Escape. Ok then dear, you know best (she's scary when she picks the bread knife up so she tends to get her own way) and anyway, it had been a while since we'd spun this particular DVD. With German forces stretched, the high command decides to place all of it's 'rotten eggs' in one basket and creates a new PoW camp ...one that is escape proof. Immediately the inmates try escape attempt after escape attempt but it seems that the Nazi's might actually have managed to achieve... Read review

Advantages: Family viewing that is funny for everyone

...One of the funniest family movies for many a year. The people at Aardvark really have set the standard for all animated movies for the forseeable future. If you have seen the Great Escape too many times but your father still wants to watch it, get him this instead. The basic plot (in case you didn't know) is about a group of chickens trying to escape from becoming pies. One of the bonuses of DVD is the extra stuff you get on them and this DVD comes with some excellent bonux features for your PC, like games, desktop setups, sounds and a clock to name but a few. When you're watching the movie try and count the number of times there is a nod and a wink to a Steven Spielburg movie who produced this one. I will give you a hint to start off, look out for the scenes that look strangely as if they might be from Indiana Jones!... Read review

...Area 17 really exists. The Rosewell crash in the desert really happened. The aliens have been probing around and now they're here. And they mean business. The aliens arrive over every major world capital with stunning special effects, park there, and hover until...what? See the movie! It's got great visuals and a decent soundtrack. So what if all the ideas and successes come out of America, and so what if the alien mothership uses some sort of Microsoft-based operating system? If you want to escape to the movies, this is an excellent movie to do it with.... Read review
