Qigong- Traditional Breath Energy Exercises
Review of Qi Gong by
barefoot777
Advantages: interesting and exotic
Disadvantages: not easy as it look
...Qigong exercises are a series of breathing exercises, aimed to stimuli vital energy, just as to strengthen immunity to diseases, adaptability to the external environment and the ability to repair internal medical damage. Quigong must be practiced in the conjunction with other forms of exercises and therapy in order to effect cure. All Chinese material arts such gongfu or kingfu rely on the mastery of qigong techniques for the attainment of mental and physical harmony.
Qigong has proved highly effective in treating certain chronic disorders. The role of qigong exercises is three-fold:
-*It helps restore vitality, by inducing a state of tranquillity. Qigong allows the body to restore vital energy, build up disease-resistance and alleviate functional disorders. Physiological experiments show that when a person is in a tranquil state...

Principles of Anatomy and Physiology
Review of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology - G.J. Tortora by
Jenschnifer
Advantages: comes with access to online content, lots of colourful diagrams and flow charts
Disadvantages: weighs a tonne
...I bought Principles of Anatomy and Physiology for university last year. The book cost £25.00 for the hard back and came with a CD ROM and access to the eGrade Plus website.
The book itself is well written, clear and concise. Like all medical texts it requires a good knowledge of biology and biochemistry to fully appreciate though there are excellent diagrams and flow charts for those who are still getting to grips with the subject.
It is easy to find what you need in the book as chaptesr are laid out according to body system starting with the structure and function of the system and then going into more detail on more specific aspects of anatomy and physiology.
The CD ROM that came with the book was brilliant and contained interactive quizes, more diagrams and a game where you can play surgeon. The Web content is much the same...

SUPERBLY SMOOTH, STYLISH AND STORABLE
Review of WaterRower Classic Rowing Machine by
LostWitness
Advantages: Many
Disadvantages: Few
.... It is also suitable for people of all ages – even the elderly can enjoy this form of exercise, because the beauty of it is that you can exercise at a pace and level of resistance that is suited to your own physiology.
Nonetheless, all these benefits are available with any normal rowing machine – so why a Water Rower? While most rowing machines imitate the action of rowing, they do so mechanically and therefore possess none of the natural dynamics that rowers experience whilst exercising in water.
Aside from assisting in an extremely efficient workout, the Water Rower is also very therapeutic. Whilst exercising, you become absorbed in the gentle rhythm and noise of the water swirling around the drum, and you could fool yourself into thinking that you are actually rowing through water.
The Rower

WaterRower is a trademark...

MORGANA1964
Advantages: Stress Relief
Disadvantages: Can make you feel spaced out
...have yet to meet one person who can honestly tell me that they don't suffer from stress. This chapter deals briefly with the causes & how your body reacts to stress. It also tells you how to recognise the signs. It deeals with stress in the workplace giving office exercises and a mental relaxation exercise. It also gives some pointers as to what to do to help you through stressful situations.
Chapter 3: Basic Massage Techniques
This chapter tells you what you need to know to prepare for and give an Indian Head Massage. There are step by step instructions for all the techniques along with some nice photographs. There is a little bit about the bones and muscles and the effect of massage on them. A bestseller for good reasons
Review of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology - G.J. Tortora by
markedwards
Advantages: Great text and illustrations
Disadvantages: None
...Its not hard to see why Tortora (as it is effectionatly knwon) is a bestseller.
This remains the best book on both anatomy and physiology for everyone, regardless of course of study - medical students, anatomists, physiologists, pharmacists, whatever.
The book is laid out in a sensible system by system style and contain exceptionally good quality diagrams and illustrations. The text is readily readible. The chapters contain a list of learning objectives and reviews at the end.
There are also some useful tables and appendices which summarise, e.g. muscle origins and insertions, for easy look of facts too. And the current versions also come with an "Altas of Human Skeleton" and student CD-ROM.
This book is not the most detailed description of anatomy and certainly if you advance to more detail later, you may need to get something...

Osteopathy- not just for bad backs!
Review of Osteopathy by
nataliegg
Advantages: Treatments are individual
Disadvantages: None
...Osteopathy is a distinctive and complete system of health care which is practised only by fully qualified practitioners, who have completed at least a 4-year degree in osteopathy.
Osteopathy and general medicine can be very similar: they both use the scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology, as well as clinical methods of investigation. In this respect, they have a similar language. The greatest differences, however, lies in the way patients are evaluated and in the approach to treatment.
General medicine focuses on the end product of the problem — that is, on the illness. The patient's problem is treated, such as through medication or surgery, whereas osteopaths focus on finding the cause of the problem.
AN EXAMPLE : you go to your GP for back pain- the GP will give you painkillers for the pain.
you go to an osteopath- she...

Focused and Relaxed yet
Review of Yoga by
Squidget
Advantages: You will feel fabulous in the mind and the soul and it is really good for your health
Disadvantages: Can wear you out if you are a beginner some asanas can be very difficult
...Yoga is best known in the West of the world as a form of gentle exercise which consists of body postures and breathing techniques, where as in fact yoga is a complete system of mental and physical training, which was originally developed as a preparation for spiritual development.
Yoga has been practice for thousands of years in India as part of Ayurveda (holistic healing) and is now popular all over the world. In the West it is valued more for its physical rather than spiritual benefits, such as its ability to increase suppleness and vitality, and also to relieve stress. It has now been incorporated into a number of Western health regimes.
~ History
The word yoga is Sanskrit for union. It originated over 5,000 years ago in India, Hindu ascetics or Yogis traditionally practiced it. The father of yoga was Patanjali and it was he whom...

A NURSE-essity for all Student Nurses!!!
Review of Ross and Wilson: Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness - Anne Waugh, Kathleen J. W Wilson by
dollydancer
Advantages: Easy to understand, very detailed
Disadvantages: None
...I bought this book during first year of studying a degree in Adult Nursing. The book was recommended by the module leader of anatomy and physiology at the university I am attending. I found the book extremely helpful when trying to cram everything in before my anatomy and physiology exam. I first read the book in the uni library, among other anatomy and physiology books. I found this one suited me best as the information was well explained and broken down into sections which were easy to digest. The text is also accompanied with detailed diagrams which are easy to understand
The book has 19 chapters in total and is further broken down into four sections namely 'The Body and its constituents', 'Communication',' Intake of Raw Materials and the Elimination of Waste', and 'Protection and Survival'.
For the benefit of the reader...

Location, location, location
Review of 10 Signs You're Getting Old by
mmpr
Advantages: Where, When and Why?
Disadvantages: Why, When and Where?
...of your life, but your children’s aren’t. You fear the parents’ evening, you fear the report, you fear the phone call.
5. Location - The Doctors
The occasional visit of the past has been replaced by increasingly frequent terror trips. What have you got, how long will it take to recover from it and what do you have to do/take to make it better? Those muscular pains once caused by over exertion would now be cured by the exercise that once caused them.
6. Location - The Letter Box
You loved receiving post as a youngster: birthday cards, post cards from family, letters from pals. Now the letter box heaves with responsibility – bills, letters from parents reminding you of the birthday you missed, bills, council confirmation that the rubbish will only be collected fortnightly henceforth, bills, reminders that the car/s is/are due...
