...The Nikon F801s is still one of the best SLRs made by the company, and is worth seeking on the used market. I bought a used example to upgrade from the earlier Nikon F501. I was specifially interested in the F801s onboard spot meter and better autofocus. I did not want to spend the cash for the new F90x as I would rarely use all of the features. I found a very clean used F801s for about 275.00. It came in the original box with all instructions and accessories. The shutter release is very fast and smooth, with no lag time. The camera will take Nikon AI or AIS manual focus lens. Older Non-AI lenses can be mounted, but provide no automatic or metering functions. The autofocus is swifter than the F501, but by no means up to the new F90x speed;that's fine with me as I only use autofocus about 25% of the time. Manual focus seems more... Read review

...I owned a Nikon F301 in my teens and that camera was brilliant! I then caught the Auto focus bug and purchased a Canon EOS 100 which took brilliant pictures nearly as good as the Nikon and the auto focus was ultra fast and you could hardly hear it focusing, the Nikon is not as quiet but not to noisy. Anyway i like the sound of the motordrive being loud. The thing that really bugged me about the Canon was that it was TOO lightweight! It felt like a toy and very plasticy. I was sure that if I dropped it that would be the end of it! So after a couple years I was tempted back to a good solid Nikon. At the time the F90x was recieving rave reviews in the press and that was good enough for me. On getting it out the box the first thing I noticed is the weight of the thing! Advantages: Solid pro camera
Disadvantages: Fiddly at times

...I have owned a Nikon F100 for over a year, using it in a professional capacity as well as for personal use. Having owned several Nikons including an F4 it can honestly say it is the best Nikon I have used. It is a solid camera, well built, especially when compared to some of todays plastic offerings. There is a range of features that even the hardened pro would have difficulty in using. The autofocus is the fastest I have come across. On the down side, the exposure does seemed to be fooled by some extremes, despite the advance matrix metering. Film rewind can also be fiddly especially when trying to change on the run. As a sucessor to the F90, a lot of pros will be buying this camera especially as it is equal to if not better than the F5 but significantly cheaper. Don't expect to find too many on the second hand market yet... Read review

Advantages: Lightweight and easy to use
Disadvantages: Manual focus can be tricky

...this camera many years as an upgrade to my Pentax P30n as i wanted to try an autofocus camera. There are a large array of lenses available for it. You can use Pentax lenses or for a wider range, try the likes of Sigma or Tamron. Both these other makes are as good if not better than the Pentax lenses available. Both silver or black coloured lenses look good on it due to the fact that both are present on the cameras body. Manual lenses can be used but they arent easy to use as the focus screen makes it almost impossible to get the focusing spot on. If using a long focal length lens at the infinity setting the focusing is less of a problem. The max shutter speed is 2000th/second this is adequate for most purposes but it would be nice if it was as fast as a Nikon F90x (8000th/second). It also has a bulb setting so you can go as slow as you like... Read review
