The Green Mile: A wonderful film
Review of The Green Mile (Wide Screen) by
Kouros
Advantages: Beautiful, touching, clever
Disadvantages: Long!
...It would appear as if Tom Hanks can do no wrong. After the gripping Saving Private Ryan, we find him in this, "The Green Mile" : a beautiful adaption of Stephen King's series of Books.
Hanks plays a prison warden who trapes the between cells on Death Row - affectionately termed the Green Mile because of the green floor that leads to the exectuation chamber.
Jon Coffey, an inmate, is the gentle giant accused of the murder of two younf girls. He claims he is innocent, and Hanks believes him.
As it transpires, Coffey is more than a gentle giant, but also a powerful healer, with the ability to bring animals, and people, back from the dead, or to cure terminal sickness.
Much is left from King's series, but that's fine. Really: it is. After having read both the series, and watched the film, while some poignant points could have made...

Gentle Giant
Review of West Indies by
jimbuck
Advantages: Great bowler. Great sportsman
Disadvantages: He's retired.
...The 23rd April 2001 will be a day that goes down in the annals of cricketing history as the West Indies ultra fast bowler, Courtney Walsh, ended his test career with bowling figures of 3 for 62 as his team beat the South Africans in the fifth and final test on his home ground in Jamaica. These final 3 wickets brought his total to a world record of 519 wickets in a test career spanning 14 years. But he may not be finished yet as he has declared that should his country really need him, he will respond.
Courtney was and is respected all over the cricketing world not just for his bowling performances but his attitude to the game in defeat as well as victory. This gentle giant of a man although fiery in his bowling was also one of the sports great sportsmen.
Courtney Andrew Walsh was born in Kingston, Jamaica on the 30th October 1962...

What if a gun had a soul?
Review of The Iron Giant DVD by
large_satsuma
Advantages: Excellent story and characters, suitable for youngsters but plenty for adults too.
Disadvantages: Fewer extra features than the Special Edition.
...Though "The Incredibles" catapulted director Brad Bird into the premier league for animated features, those in the know remember "The Iron Giant" as the first indication that an exceptional talent had arrived. Bird's take on the story "The Iron Man" by Ted Hughes began with the brilliantly evocative question: What if a gun had a soul? The answer to this is a movie of unusual emotional and thematic depth.
"The Iron Giant" tells the story of Hogarth, a young boy who befriends the eponymous 50-foot metal-eater after his mysterious crash-landing in the forests beyond his home town. In the era of Cold War, such an event can hardly go unnoticed by the authorities, and Hogarth soon finds himself the protector of a gentle spirit misunderstood by an entire planet. But is his new friend really as peace-loving as he seems?
Fans of "The...

a survival story, though not of the fittest
Review of The Tiny Seed - Eric Carle by
baberuth15
Advantages: can be enjoyed by both older and younger children
Disadvantages: none
...The Tiny Seed is a children's picture book with Carle's beautiful and original style of illustration telling the story of the journey of a tiny seed through the seasons and charting its growth. Like many of his books the story is simple and focusses on nature, helping children to learn whilst enjoying a story.
The story begins with seeds being blown by the wind. The tiny seed is so small that it avoids the dangers that befall other bigger seeds and survives to grow into a giant flower. The story ends with the flower's seeds being blown by the wind and so the cycle begins again.
My daughter has enjoyed this book from the age of 2 onwards. The story is so simple and pictures clear that young children can just enjoy it as an adventure story for plants! Now that she's older she gets more from it - how seeds get blown around and what...

The Johnny Green Giant
Review of The Green Mile (Wide Screen) by
joecon
Advantages: Cast, Director
Disadvantages: The mouse
...The Green Mile manages to combine the enchanting qualities of the Wizard of Oz with the brutal directness of Saving Private Ryan and carefully pushes all the right buttons to enable us to believe prison warders are wonderful people and mice really enjoy performing circus tricks in the company of humans.
This movie is a prison drama directed by Frank Darabont based on a novel by Stephen King. This duo were also the creative talent behind the Shawshank Redemption which provided more than enough up-front credibility to whet my appetite.
Back in 1935, in a prison in Louisiana death row is known as "The Green Mile" because of the faded lime colour linoleum floor, Michael Clarke Duncan portrays John Coffey, a simpleton and gentle giant falsely accused of murdering two girls. Tom Hanks plays Paul Edgecomb, his prison warder, in this parable...

The gentle giant
Review of Renault Espace 2.2 dCi by
mad_driver
Advantages: big.... very big
Disadvantages: try parking it!
...I first came in to contact with this car when my mother decided that we didn't have enough room so one day instead of a little corsa...she pulled up in a giant of an Espace.
When I first saw it my first thoughts were "how much fuel will this thing use" and rightly so. When the car had no-one in the car and we took it easy we still had to fill up at almost every other petrol station, it was that bad. I don't know exactly how many miles to the gallon we were getting, but at an estimate I would say that it was 28-33mpg, that's pants!
On the good side the car never broke down on us and it always started first time. Apart from the regular services I don't think that the car knew what a garage was, so on that point it gets some browney points.
This car is awesome if you want to transport a small army, or if you want a family gathering...

Dead Man Walking
Review of The Green Mile (Wide Screen) by
jarjar65uk
Advantages: Good storyline
Disadvantages: Runs longer than expected
...This is one of the few movies I have went to see in the cinema and one of the few I haven't regretted paying the money to watch. This is one of these movies that doesn't scre the pants off you more like hrrifies the pants off. There are now jumps and bumps here in fact the pace of the movie never goes above slow meandering but such is the stroyline and the suspense it holds it captivates the viewer all the same.
The film is above some unsavoury characters on death row and some not so savory and told through the eyes of Tom Hanks who plays a warder on the green mile as its called because of the colour of the floor. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen when a character called John Coffee a gentle giant of a man arrives on the mile after been convicted of killing two young girls. I can't tell you much but suffice to say John...

The Iron Giant
Review of The Iron Giant DVD by
ros145
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
...The "Iron Giant" is a wonderfully told story about a boy who finds agiant metal robot who eats metal. The tale takes place in a New England town during the "Red Scare" of the late 1950's. The boy befriends the giant ironman after saving it from being electrocuted (it tried eating the town's powerstation). The giant's intentions are peaceful but the boy keeps the giant away from the townspeople because he fears they will think that it's a secret weapon from Russia. The director, Brad Bird, has created a film that captures the paranoia that was sweeping our country at that time. The giant is a loveable misfit who cannot understand human nature. The boy, Hogarth, develops a touching relationship with the giant as it tries to discover why it came to earth. The movie is a joy to watch and is a future classic. It makes for excellent family...
