Old Father Time Takes His Toll
Review of Ping Mens ISI-K Custom Fit Irons by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: Straighter shots. Sweeter hit. Quality manufacturer.
Disadvantages: Not quite so good for delicate chip and pitch shots.
...to keep my golf game up to scratch. (And my handicap in single figures!)
~ ~ The old trusty Wilson blades were consigned to the (already overflowing with old golf paraphernalia!) hall cupboard, and I purchased a set of new Ping ISI cavity back irons. Well, not quite new, (second hand actually) but new to the mad cabbie!
I had used Ping irons before, when I successfully used a set of their old Ping Eye 2 clubs for a couple of seasons in the early 1990’s, so knew that I was buying a set of quality clubs from a renowned manufacturer. You have to be careful these days, as there is such a plethora of golf equipment on the market, it’s easy for an inexperienced buyer to be taken in by the extravagant claims of some somewhat less than reputable manufacturers, who have their lousy equipment made ‘on the cheap’ in Far-Eastern sweat shops...

Golfing Version Of Bill Gates
Review of Ping Eye 2 Irons by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: See opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion
...Early History
<><><><><><>
~ ~ The Karsten Manufacturing Company, or in more common golfing parlance “Ping”, have been making fine golf clubs since the mid-1960’s.
~ ~ They first came to the attention of golfers with a revolutionary new putter, that was destined to take the golfing world by storm.
The founder of the company was an engineer from the USA called Karsten Solheim.
When he took up the game of golf in the 1950’s, he wasn’t able to find a putter that suited his golf game, so he simply decided that he’d make his own.
So popular did his new design prove that he then began to make them in his garage at home (shades of Bill Gates!) for members of his family and close friends.
By 1996 he’d given up the day job altogether, and his home spun cottage industry were now based in a new custom built factory in Phoenix, Arizona...

Rescue me cheaply
Review of Ping G5 Hybrid by
plod591
Advantages: Price, quality and result
Disadvantages: none
...For a man of my limited ability playing the game with a handicap of 24, Ping clubs would be a luxury but wasted money in my case.
I had never owned a rescue club or recovery club as these hybrids are more commonly known and my golf suffered whenever I found my ball in the semi rough or slightly off the fairway. No matter what club I used I could never get any distance out of the crap I was in.
I did eventually discuss the rescue clubs, as I prefer to call the hybrids, with fellows golfers at my club and found their advice very helpful. The majority agreed that buying the Ping, Taylor made, Callaway and other famous well used brands of the professional golfers would be a waste of money and to search for more reasonably priced hybrids.
With this advice I scoured both the internet and several golf shops before finally visiting American...

Long and Forgiving
Review of Ping i3+ Blade by
Wiley303
Advantages: Look great and give great confidence
Disadvantages: A bit pricey perhaps?
...I've been playing golf since I was about 12 and in the last 10 years I've worked my handicap down, so it fluctuates around the 7 mark. The vast majority of that time I played with some second hand Wilson Staff blades, which did the job fine.
At least I thought they did, until I invested in these Ping irons. They are beautiful golf clubs, both to look at and strike the ball with. They are accurate, or as accurate as I can be, hit the ball a good distance and best of all they're forgiving. I don't need to hit that 3 Iron just right in order to hit it 200 yards, I know even a mishit won't be a disaster. That gives me real confidence.
I know my dad has also played with them, and was so impressed that he swapped his Titleists for some Pings, and he's now loving them too. I know they're a bit on the expensive side, but you will be using them...

Ping G5 irons
Review of Ping I5 Irons by
silkyuk9
Advantages: Custom fit,
Disadvantages: none
...Ok, i'm not going to bore you with the science of golf irons, if a reveiwer started going on about the science you would be so confused that you wouldn't know which iron to get.
ping irons are one of the best irons any golfer can buy, not only do ping custom fot you out that also provide you with the iron which is best for you.
Go into any golf shop and you can buy a number of makes straight off the shelf, but what if you are 6 foot 5, or 5 foot 6? all the irons on the shelf are the same size and have the same degree of lie on the floor. Ping irons have 10 different degree of lie ranging from: gold to maroon 'dot', the dot on the golf club is spasific to how you hold the club, and how you place it on the floor. lets go back to the shelf iron. If you are 6 foot 5 say the iron may not lay on the floor flush and the toe end on the club...

Ping G5 Hybrid Golf Club
Review of Ping G5 Hybrid by
ccundall
Advantages: Easy to strike, good ball control, flexible
Disadvantages: Cost
...the same price as each golf shop varies. One point to note is that the G5 range will be replaced by the G10 range very shortly (Sept '07), so anybody thinking of buying the G5 model should either wait or ask for a bigger discount. As for me I bought the Ping G5 purely because I knew it was the right club for me, and I'll be trying out a Ping hybrid 21 degree club soon to replace my old 3 iron....

Want To Do A Deal Tosh?
Review of Nevada Bob by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: Good prices. Large selection. Knowledgable sales staff.
Disadvantages: Not a lot. Well, I spend way too much money in here.
...Nevada Bobs over the others, as in terms of price, there really isn’t that much to choose between them.
They all have a huge range of golf equipment and clubs at good prices, and it can sometimes pay to shop around for the best deal if you are making a big purchase.
All offer all the latest clubs, like Callaway, Taylor Made, Ping, Nike, etc, and carry a comprehensive selection of other peripheral equipment like golf shoes, trolleys, bags, holdalls, waterproofs and balls.
One big factor is that the Dublin store is located only a five-minute drive away from my house, so it’s very convenient.
But I suppose the main reason is really the staff.
I find that in Nevada Bob’s the sales assistants are invariably good golfers in their own right, and so well able to offer you the right advice when it comes to selecting a set of clubs...

The First Golf Shot On The Moon
Review of Wilson Staff Progressive Irons by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: See opinion
Disadvantages: See opinion
...to 1992, I played a set of “Ping Eye 2” irons from Karsten.
As I said in my opinion on the Pings, I found them a wonderful club, but could never get used to being without the extra feel that you get from a blade iron when playing shorter and finesse shots to the green.
So I simply didn’t use the shorter irons from the Ping set, but stuck with an old set of Ben Sayer’s blades I’d had for years from the eight iron through to the sand wedge.
~ ~ The Staff Progressive solved this problem for me, and meant I no longer had to walk around with a golf bag full of clubs that didn’t match, and thus looked as if they’d all come from a jumble sale as a result.
~ ~ Now I consistently hit my longer irons further and straighter than with a regular set of blades, and can still retain that vital touch with my...

Wam Bam thank you Bertha
Review of Callaway Great Big Bertha II by
fuzzycats27
Advantages: Balance and diastance
Disadvantages: Intial price.
...I purchased my Great Big Bertha from American Golf Discount just over a year ago. I had been looking into updating my driver for a while. I previously owned a 10 degree Big Bertha Steelhead.
I tried 3 drivers the day I got the Great Big Bertha. They were apart from the GBB, a Titleist and a Ping driver. Each of them had a 10 degree loft and a firm flex shaft. The differnce in price across the different drivers were about £150. The Ping being the cheapest and the GBB being the most expensive. Because I had already owned a Callaway Driver I knew of the quality and service you get from Callaway but I wanted to try other brands because the technology had come along way and price was also a factor.
After hitting each club on the driving range and using a computer to see how the drives went it became clear that the GBB was going...

Want To Hit The Ball Like Tiger Woods
Review of Callaway Mens Big Bertha ERC II Titanium Drivers by
the_mad_cabbie
Advantages: Hits the golf ball both longer and straighter
Disadvantages: There is a question about its legality.
...wouldn’t be qualified to answer that question, and leave it to the respective governing bodies to sort out the mess between them.
What I do know is that having tested out this club over a number of rounds I would agree completely with the test findings. It DOES hit the golf ball both further and straighter than any other driver I have ever used, and that includes its “legal” competitors from the likes of Taylor Made and Ping.
~ ~ But at a cost of about £500 (Sterling, it’s nearer £650 Irish Punts!) it won’t be going into my golf bag until they come up with a definitive answer as to its legality or otherwise.
I got caught out this way once before, when my “Ping Eye 2” irons were suddenly declared illegal after I had been using them for over two years, that resulted in them having to be returned...
