Cheap HD-DVD player and DVD Upscaling
Review of Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive by
RicME85
Advantages: Price, Ease of Use
Disadvantages: Wont be as many films to buy as Blu-Ray
...So...
Everywhere you go on the internet these days you find comments from sad individuals with nothing better to do than write " OMG'Z DON'T BUY HD-DVD ITS LOST TO BLU-RAY, THERES NO POINT". I picked up the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive the other day for £39.99 from PC World after asking the manager to do a price match as their in-store price was £114!
You maybe one of the people I mentioned above or you might just be curious as to why i bought it seeing as HD-DVD is now at the end of its life. Well...
HD-DVD is the better format out of the two high-definition medias out there. It produces much clearer images than Blu-ray. Again the inferior media wins the battle just like VHS over Betamax. Not only does HD-DVD have the superior picture quality the drive itself can also "up-scale" your standard DVD movies to a higher definition...

SAMSUNG DVD-HD950? I DON'T THINK SO!!!
Review of Samsung DVD-HD950 by
Georgios4u
Advantages: Slim Design....HDMI Ability.....Solid Compatibility
Disadvantages: Poor Poor Picture Quality
...THE STORY
After purchasing a new LCD TV I felt I should also buy a new high quality and worth of money DVD player since my previous one was already 5 years old. Bearing that in mind I started an extensive market research for the best possible product that could fulfil my desires but at the same time to be a really good bargain. Mostly, my research included: visits to retailers and online research. After reading as many possible reviews I decided to buy the HD950 DVD PLAYER by SAMSUNG. I feel the need to tell you now at the beginning of my review, that the reviews I read before buying the product were at their most "professional" reviews written by the manufacturers of the product. Perhaps this was the biggest mistake I've made during the whole market research process, for the simple reason that I never thought to advise people who...

A great DVD player if you're not into HD yet
Review of Panasonic DVD-S33 by
PGregory
Advantages: Picture and sound quality, plays most file formats, huge array of options
Disadvantages: No HDMI or upscaling
...With the plethora of DVD recorders out there, and now the availability of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, does it still make sense to buy a plain old DVD player?
If that player is the Panasonic S-33, then the answer is yes. Barring the HD formats above and SACD, it will play just about any format you throw at it. Its DivX playback is probably one of the reason you are reading this. Of course, you can get most of these playback features with a cheapo, low-quality player, but read on...
The DVD picture quality on a standard TV is, quite simply, stunning for a DVD player at any price. However, it lacks the HDMI output and upscaling of of its sister product the S-53, so this player is perhaps not the first choice if you have an HD TV. But on my CRT telly, the picture is above broadcast quality in my view, with no visible compression artifacts...

Samsung DVD-HD860
Review of Samsung DVD-HD860 by
pieman1970
Advantages: Near HD upscaling at a very cheap price
Disadvantages: No virtual surround sound, not all DVD upscale well
...As soon as I heard about upscaling DVD players I discovered the Samsung HD860 was one of the latest models (2006). As I had purchased an HD compatible plasma it needed to have the best available source I could afford for the money and at £65 this slim and modern looking player was a bargain.
The player will output a normal scart signal (composite or RGB) and via the HDMI lead upscale the signal to either 576p, 720p or 1080i respectively (only with an HD TV). What this means if that the clever chip within the box will take the normal 704x576 pixels of the DVD and increase them to near full hd resolution.
The results can be simply stunning on a clean or new DVD, older DVD titles do not benefit as much as they contain more noise which does'nt help with the upscaling process.
The DVD comes with a simple remote to access the various...

Disadvantages: none really
...Here you have the Samsung DVD-HD860. I can find pretty much only good things about this beauty- and yes physically beauty. It looks brilliant.
I currently have this set up to my TV in the living room with a home cinema system attached. Setting it up was very easy. HD DVD
Review of Toshiba HD-XE 1 by
1Tank1
Advantages: Great Looks, Ease of Use and Set-up, brilliant picture and sound quality
Disadvantages: Cheap looking HDMI Cable
...for the umpteenth time)
VERY EXPENSIVE up to 4 x the price of a HD DVD player
The backing is huge with the likes of Samsung, Sony, Philips, Pioneer, Panasonic, Hitachi, Sharp, Dell and LG all giving it the thumbs up.
HD DVD
The GOOD
Much cheaper and easier to manufacture, Excellent quality on even the early disks.
The BAD
About half the storage spave of Blu Ray
Limited choice of players
Not as much support from Hollywood studios (This could very well as none of the Hollywood studios have ruled out producing HD DVDs)
The backing, although smaller than Blu Ray, has Toshiba, Sanyo, NEC and the heavyweight MICROSOFT in it's corner. Because of the price issue most experts believe that HD DVD will sell more units than Blu Ray, especially when the Chinese start producing it.
Both formats upscale normal DVD's so the picture quality...

LONG LIVE HD DVD!!!!
Review of Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive by
colin_worldcup
Advantages: Great product - rock bottom price
Disadvantages: It's HD DVD
...LONG LIVE HD DVD!!!
Like alot of people out there I wanted to enter into the world of high def. movies but found myself asking 'is it worth it'.
I found my question answered by a visit to my local gamestation where I stubmled across an XBox 360 add-on drive for £25.00 with 2 films!
The unit provides great picture and sound when watching back movies and with films now available from £2.99 (hmv.co.uk - a few examples: American Gangster-£2.99, The Kingdom-£2.99, The Thing-£2.99.........go have a look for yourself!) this is the investment that has to be made by anyone who is wanting to 'dabble' in an HD upgrade.
All this and you only have to stick in the supplied disc, give it 25 seconds to run/save and you're good to go.
Also as well as performing as a HD player this unit will also act as an upscaler for standard DVD...

Maligned but very capable DVD player
Review of Samsung DVD-HD950 by
NomisG
Advantages: Compatability
Disadvantages: slightly clumsy remote
...Well, I feel the need to weigh in on the defence!
Firstly, everybody talks about the upscaling. It cannot perform miracles. Upscalings main purpose in life is to fill you new big screen. It will not improve the quality - in fact quite the opposite. In laymans terms, your DVD disc contains about 500 lines of information. Your nice shiney new HD TV can display 1080 lines. What to do? Basically, show each line twice (in simple terms). If you connect the Samsung to a standard def TV, the picture is very good and this is the only fair test.
I don't see any of the other reviews mention picture calibration. If you want to get the best from your DVD player (any DVD player) you MUST calibrate it and the TV together. It is a fairly lengthy process and many/most people don't know about it. But you will never see your HD TV at its true potential...

DVD player with a bad stutter
Review of Toshiba Toshiba SD-5000 DVD Player by
harry1511
Advantages: Upconversion to 1080i, HDMI, DIVX Playback
Disadvantages: Not very Durable, Both my players have broken
...A great DVD player with Upconversion to 780p/1080i, HDMI and component video outputs as well as DIVX playback. Pity that it will only play for 60minutes before playback grinds to a halt.
I bought this player as I've not long upgraded to a HDTV. I was noticing a bit of picture derogation using my old player (connected via SCART) and decided it was time to upgrade. I was not happy buying a Blue ray or HD DVD player until for format war has finished, so i was looking for a player with HDMI output.
As soon as I saw the SD-5000 I was impressed with the slim design and the front of the player has a great finish and I knew it would look good underneath my TV.
Once connected to my TV via the HDMI ( note no HDMI cable was included with the player I felt a little disappointed with this) The picture was improved instantly...
