Another cracker from Sony
Review of Sony DVPS550D by
Oliy
Advantages: Ease of use, quality of build, audio and visual excellence
Disadvantages: There is a lot of competition at this price range
...As with most sony high end equipment, this DVD player is solidly built. The transport has a smooth mechanism and is solid enough to withstand all the movie changing you can throw at it! The rest of the fascia is simple yet well built, offering intuitive operation, as far as dvd players go. The laser pickup is well built, giving very little jitter, and keeping those blacks solid, true black, and sharp crisp outlines, everything you would expect for a dvd player of this price. Sound is excellent, all the necessary connections for a home cinema provided. the player plays cds and is region unlocked. the visual and audio quality are excellent, to be expected from one of the leaders of home cinema....

A great DVD player
Review of Philips DVD955 by
Garza007
Advantages: Great digital quality pictures
Disadvantages: A bit pricey
...I have a Philips DVD-955 and I think that it is the ultimate video playback source for your Home Cinema. This sophisticated player delivers stunning digital video pictures, with digital multichannel sound, from revolutionary long-playing DVD-Video discs.
The digital pictures are crystal clear on your screen and the sound quality is stunning... This is definetly one of the best DVD players around... There are a wide range of functions, plus it not only plays DVD's, but it also plays VCD's and it can CD-R and CD-RW.
But the Philips DVD-955 doesn't come cheap, around £4,500, but it is definetly worth it... I would definetly recommend the Philip 955 to anyone who is looking for a DVD player that does it all, because this one certainly does......

Quality Home Cinema on a budget??
Review of NAD T751 by
Brigham
Advantages: Stunning stereo music playback at the price
Disadvantages: Surround sound steering could be better
...I purchased this receiver to match my NAD T550 DVD player as part of my Home Cinema set-up.
The first impression on removing it from the box was that it looked more like a piece of military equipment than hi-fi.
The unit is quite heavy for it's size but is easily moved around on the hi-fi rack. The provided instructions take the form of a book. Extremely comprehensive! I spent hours reading them! This, in itself, could be a little off-putting for a complete novice. However, if you persist, there is a full explanation on every single function available.
Connecting up was very straight forward. The power cord is not the detachable type (like a kettle) but is built in to the receiver so you cannot swap it for a upgrade.
Speaker terminals are the plastic screw-down variety although there are removeable caps to allow banana plugs...

It won't launch a rocket, but it will play DVDs
Review of Pioneer DV-393 by
ultracoolgiovanni
Advantages: excellent playback, amazing audio, easy to use, good remote control, not expensive to buy
Disadvantages: none at all
...I like to watch movies but detest having to sit through a screening at my local cinema where invariably I will be tormented, annoyed and general wound up to boiling point by the rudeness of the public who seem to congregate within the cinema to chat, play on their phones or start a food fight so I invested in a home cinema system that would allow me to enjoy my films from the comfort of my own couch. Part of this package included the Pioneer DV 393 – S, the S standing for Silver, not some souped up device capable of launching a rocket for NASA.
The overall package cost 560 Euros (approximately £399) but when broken down into the component parts, the DVD player was only 70 Euros (approximately £50), a reasonable price considering that only a few years ago, DVD players were considered luxury items and were in turn expensive pieces...

All In One Wireless Surround Sound DVD Player
Review of Philips LX3750 by
Surj1
Advantages: Supports all formats, Wireless technology & Sleak design
Disadvantages: Takes Some Patients to Set Up
...I purchased this home cinema system over 2-3 years ago.
The DVD Player is sleak in design and has a digital display which has a mirrored effect on it when turned off. It is also has a solid build and weighs more that your average DVD player. The volume control is situated on the top on the DVD player and its design reminds me off the iPod control, very cool effect. It plays DVD's, VCD's, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW. Also has MP3 playback and plays your audio CD's. The player has a built in AM/FM radio too.
The Home Cinema Surround Sound System includes 5.1. which is 5 speakers (2 side front speakers, 2 side back speakers & centre speaker) and 1 subwoofer. It supports Dolby Digital whiach is the standard for all DVD players but this one goes one step further and also supports DTS which is on most major DVD releases. It basically means...

Is it a Hi-Fi, is it a DVD player...
Review of Sony DVAS300 by
Piegon
Advantages: Radio tuner, CD player, CD video player and DVD player
Disadvantages: No surround for Radio or CD's
...This is one of the best home entertainment systems around, a Hi-Fi and a DVD player in one. One of the most stylish looking systems on the market with a good picture and excellent sound delivered through the 5 surround speakers and sub. As for the Hi-Fi side of things, there is a pretty good FM/AM Tuner, no RDS but station names can be entered if you have to. The DVD player can also play CD's with the surround speakers and sub producing excellent CD play back.
As for the DVD player itself, its idiot proof, I got this because my TV speakers were crap, the surround is excellent and the sub imitates the cinema prefectly, the system can also be linked up to a games console or video for better sound.
Overall this is in of the best value home entertainment packages around, radio tuner, CD player, CD video player and DVD player. Excellent...

EXCELLENT MID RANGE DVD
Review of Panasonic DVD-RV 20 by
kano
Advantages: Silver (very sexy!), sorround sound outputs, digital audio output, can be multi region, virtual soround sound for those us without home cinema setup!, NTSC output and subwoofer output.
Disadvantages: Sound options could be better explained in manual, sound could be better (esp. in conjunction with panasonic tv!)!
...has 1 scart output, an S-video output (the best quality for images), 5 point sorround sound outputs (for connection to a home cinema) and the usual audio/video output. If you can afford a good gold plated scart cable, this is the best was to connect the machine to your tv. If not I have found using the enclosed audio/video patch cable to be quite adequate.
The sorround sound outputs allow you to connect this to any dolby processor and by changing the options on the dvd player ensure you get the best sound possible. It also allows you connect a subwoofer ONLY if you find tv sound adequate but want some more base to flash it out some!
My only gripe is that, having purchased this player for the sole reason that I have a pansonic dolby sorround tv, it does not output true sorround sound to the television. However, the sound it does output...

Sanyo DVD-SL22
Review of Sanyo DVD-SL22 by
canalla
Advantages: Full support for Dolby 5.1 and DTS, Good picture quality, easy to setup and use, childlock feature
Disadvantages: no support for SVCD
...This DVD player has support for all major forms of digital media (excluding DivX and SVCD) and so is ideal as part of a home cinema system. The player has a digital optical output, allowing for the sound to be fed directly into a surround sound system to allow use of the 5.1/DTS decoding that this player provides. Connection to a tv is possible by using composite (3 phono) or scart, which makes it compatible with almost any piece of av equipment. The picture quility is very good, even with action packed scenes. The remote control is packed full of features, allowing easy access to everything from multi angle repeat, to subtitles and system configuration. The front access buttons (play, stop skip forward/back) allow for easy operation without the remote. Cables are included in the box for easy setup along with a detailed instuction book...

Cinema in the palm of your hand.
Review of Guerlain Eye-Trek FMD-200 by
amirul
Advantages: 52 inch screen at a low cost
Disadvantages: cannot be worn for long periods comfortably
...I could not wait to get home with the Eye Trek box, to see if I could replicate the experience of going to the cinema in my bedroom.
I got home, ripped home the packaging and there it was, a lightweight pair of futuristic glasses linked to a small connection unit that is used to connect to the various devices.
DVD Player
The unit was connected to a DVD player using the Phono leads that came with the unit. I am referring to the leads that have the red, white and yellow connectors, at one end and the other end has a earphone style plug. The earphone style plug plugs into the unit and the 3 connectors connect to the DVD player.
Viewing a DVD with the glasses at first is breath taking.
When the glasses are on your face and you see this huge display in fromt of you, you cannot help but gasp. However, there are certain limitations.

A cinema in your pocket
Review of Pioneer PDV-LC10 by
Splodge
Advantages: All your friends will want one........
Disadvantages: It's small enough for one of them to take yours
...I was in the market for a home DVD player when I came across this. It had all the features of a high end DVD/CD/VCD player and it's portable!
This player has all the facilities you would expect to find on a mid-high end DVD player:- DVD/CD/VCD playback, DTS/Dolby Digital/PCM sound output, S-VHS/Composite video output. Finding an optical output on such a small machine was a pleasant surprise
Without the detatchable battery case it is a slim, beautiful machine. (about the same size as a DVD box) The case is metallic silver with a hinged lid that folds back to reveal a 7" widescreen display, two tiny stereo speakers and all the disc transport controls.
Using the PDV-LC10 is very easy although you have to bear in mind that this is a portable device and is therefore less sturdy that a dedicated home DVD player. As soon as you insert...
