Prevented Trailer Tragedy
Review of Nationwide Autocentre by
Brynharry
Advantages: Speedy response
Disadvantages: None
...After a bad towing experience with my horse on board, it was obvious that I had a problem with my trailers brakes! I could not find anyone to fix my brakes on my horse trailer. I called my nearest Nationwide Autocentre (Camborne, Cornwall) and they told me they could fix it no problem. Which they did, the staff were very helpful and kind, It was just as well I had the trailers brakes repaired when I did as the brakes had gone completely! It is so easy to just load your horse into one of these trailers and forget to do any safety checks! I dread to think what could have happened if Nationwide hadn't come to my rescue!
I have noticed a big difference when I'm towing now - especially when I'm going down hill!...

Safe travelling in Leather.
Review of Cottage Craft Padded Leather Headcollar by
spottydog2
Advantages: Looks nice.
Disadvantages: A bit more expensive.
....
I also use a trailer tie. This is a tie that you leave in the trailer. When you load the horse, you unclip the leadrope and attach the trailer tie (which is already hanging up) to the headcollar. The purpose of the trailer tie is, if the horse falls in the trailer (it does happen but luckily not very often and never to me), the trailer tie releases so that the horse does not get hung up if they lose their balance. I have found the trailer tie undone once. One of the horses didn`t travel very well around corners and he used to lose his balance (but not fall), even when doing what seemed like 0 mile an hour. We actually found that he travels better in a wider trailer, so that he can stand with his legs wider, so we use that one now. It is still nice to know that they won`t be hung up if they do fall.
A combination of the trailer...

My first trailer, Ifor Williams 505.
Review of Ifor Williams Trailers by
spottydog2
Advantages: Lightweight, easy to tow, retain value, smart.
Disadvantages: No handle on inside of jocky door.
...After afew years of having horses and paying for transport I decided to buy a trailer after careful consideration. I had never towed before and did not have a vehicle suitable for towing. It was not a decision taken lightly. I had considered buying a lorry but contemplated that the costs would be considerably higher to sustain another roadworhty vehicle in comparison with higher daily fuel costs to run a 4 x 4. (correct me if I am wrong). I bought a suitable towing vehicle and an Ifor Williams 505 which was about 5 years old. This cost me £2500 (I have had it nearly 2 years) from a reputable dealer and had full service history. It may cost more from dealers but at the time it was the best option for me as I didn`t really know what I needed to check from a safety angle. Also looking at the advertisments at the time, there were...

Horse and Hound Geared to the Horsy People
Review of Horse and Hound by
ashford
Advantages: Well Illustrated. Good Writing. Informative
Disadvantages: Editorial Slant Will Not Appeal to All
...I would like to begin this review with an important caveat-I am not in favour of hunting and whilst I am not an "active" animal rights campaigner, I would like to see in my lifetime, the abolition of fox hunting.
This magazine is published by IPC Media and is the only weekly that is devoted to the equestrian world. It has a surprisingly wide coverage and aspects related to hunting are a relatively small part of its editorial coverage.
Among topics covered are details of equestrian events, stories of stud life, articles on the care of horses, horse products, and product reviews. There are sections on horse racing and some practical advice pieces. A recent issue, for example, gave tips on horse trailer travel.
Extensive news items are published including results of equestrian events, dressage competitions and such like.Equestrian shows...

it still is a GREAT Car
Review of Chrysler Neon 2.0 SE by
mariush123
Advantages: everything
Disadvantages: pulling big trailers...
...I have previously written a review on the Chrysler neon lx heading : "who said safety and luxury is expensive".
Feel free to read and give your comments, I just have to add another comment to the Chrysler neon range.
Overall it is a very nice car with all the added gadgets ,like air-con, power steering, traction control and abs brakes.
Although the LX models are a 130bhp 2.0 litre car the power might seem a bit on the low end, but do yourselves the favour and push the revs to about 6000rmp and you will notice the 130 horses packed under the hood works well together, it gives you the impression of all the horses gathering together, accommodating each other to give all the power simultaneously, all equal , and working together like a well trained team.
The downside of the NEON that I picked up is when I moved house about 2 weeks ago, we...

Avoid a black eye and cut cheek with this.
Review of Chifney Bit and Headpiece by
spottydog2
Advantages: Stops the horse rearing in hand.
Disadvantages: Can be severe if used incorrectly.
.... The bottom bit of metal then circles around the chin and the horse is led from the leadrope attached to the rope under the chin. It looks a pretty horrible bit of equipment which is why it is so important to use it correctly. You can put it on on its own, or you can slip it on over the bridle. It is only on for a very short time. The chifney acts as leverage, it does not hurt unless the horse tries to rear or pull. As soon as the horse does either, it acts on the tongue. The lead rope should also be loose on the chifney so that it does not hurt the horse. If they try to rear it will hurt. If they don`t it won`t.
When to use a Chifney.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The chifney can be used to load the horse into a trailer or it can be used to bring them in from the field. When loading a horse, it is not used to drag the horse...

Ifor Williams? I against williams!!!
Review of Ifor Williams Trailers by
Pink_Kangaroo
Advantages: turn up in style!
Disadvantages: check it's been made properly!!!
...We bought a brand new Ifor Williams Hunter trailer to carry my two large competition horses and thought i had made a really good investment! My 17.2 fitted in lovelly and it towed to its first competition a dream.
When we got there, it turned out to be a nighmare!
On parking up and jumping in through the jockey door, I was horrified to be greeted by a stream of blood running like a river to the front of the trailer and see my young mare standing trapped against the side as the partition has slid across and wedged her just below her fetlocks. It was amazing that she had not freaked out and made matters worse. On summoning some help we managed to lift the partition back off of her and replace it and lead her out to seek vetinary attention.
12 stiches later (and a nice sized vets bill) we were ready to roll, but how was I going to get her...

The Ministry of Silly Walks.
Review of Masta Travel Boots by
spottydog2
Advantages: Protects.
Disadvantages: Silly Walks.
...Travel boots are worn for when the horse is in transit. They are used to protect the lower leg. Some people use bandages over gamgee, some people use velcro fastening travel boots and some people don`t bother. Boots can make some horses panic, so some do travel better without them. Horses can become unbalanced in transit though so it is probably sensible to protect them against cuts or injury.
Travelling.
* * * * * * * *
It is important to plan before transporting your horse. Horses can become reluctant, or near on impossible to load if they are upset by something. If you treat loading them in a calm manner from the start, then hopefully the experience will not be a bad one. Make sure that everything is ready prior to loading your horse, because you don`t want to make them fed up standing in the trailer or lorry waiting...

great for towing but nothing else
Review of Land Rover Discovery 2.5 Td5 by
SecretFormula
Advantages: great for towing, excellent driving position
Disadvantages: bumpy when not towing
...I'm only writing this opinion based on the fact that I hired one at the weekend for towing - unfortunately like most people out there I couldn't afford one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (unless I write about 2000 reviews for ciao a day!!!!!)
I have my own horse trailer, 2 horses and a mondeo - now as most of you will know - the mondeo will tow 1 horse but to tow 2 it would - but illegally of course - but wanting to go a far distance and wanting to take 2 horses I needed a vehicle that could do the job properly!!!
As I was letting a friend ride one of my horses we decided to hire a vehicle and share the cost. After ringing around a few places I found a garage locally that hired Discovery's for the day for £35.
The vehicle in question was a Landrover Discovery TDI 2.5 this was on a P Reg and apparently would be valued at around £12...

Just hook and go.
Review of Trident trailer hire by
LUNAH_C
Advantages: No need to store, or worry about security.
Disadvantages: Must pay for damages.
...Our little Daihatsui HiJet MPV is great. It is not as big as most MPV's but can seat six comfortably. The back seats can go down to create space and even with them up there is room behind the back seats. Everyday this is fine, but when a family of six go on holiday for three weeks then a little more space is needed.
We toyed with the idea of buying a trailer but the cost and lack of storage space put us off. So we decided to investigate hiring.
A quick internet search came up with Trident Trailers and being a name we recognised, we decided to investigate further.
Trident Trailers have four branches in Kent. Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Sittingbourne and Canterbury. Trident Trailers stock all sorts of trailers including, platform, flatbed, tilt covered, garden machinery, covered van trailers, fully enclosed, dinghy, boat, horse...
