Advantages: Good direction by Oliver Stone
Disadvantages: Tom Cruise tries too hard to win an Oscar

...'Born on the Fourth of July' is the second film in Oliver Stone's Vietnam War trilogy, the first being the excellent 'Platoon', and the final being 'Heaven & Earth'. The film details the story of Ron Korvic (Tom Cruise) who is paralyzed during the Vietnam War. Due to the bad treatment that the war veterans receive on returning to the United States, it sparks in him an activism for human rights and anti-war. Cruise subsequently grows a beard. The film disappoints because it is in the shadow of 'Platoon', which is probably the best Vietnam war movie alongside 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Apocalypse Now'. 'BOTFOJ' fails then, because it distracts from the war itself and turns the struggle into the problems of one man, whereas 'Platoon' showed us how a group of soldiers affected the war.
