Mountain Language
Review of Mountain Language - Harold Pinter by
sottovoce82
Advantages: Clear and important political message
Disadvantages: Direct, dim, and disturbing
...Mountain Language (1988)
By
Harold Pinter (1930- )
Mountain Language is a very short one-act play by the English playwright Harold Pinter. The first scene shows a young woman and an elderly woman as they go to visit one of their relatives who was accused of speaking the forbidden mountain language. The older woman was bitten by one of the dogs in the prison, and yet the officer and sergeant torture her and her companion with stupid questions and harass the latter sexually. We see in the second scene that the elderly woman was in the prison to visit her son. The woman tries to talk to her son with the mountain language she is used to, for she doesn't know the capital language, yet the officer starts jabbing her with a stick. Still, she manages to tell her son that his wife and three kids are waiting for him. In the third scene we see...

chivalric epic
Review of The Song of Roland - Turoldus by
lewiscrofts
Advantages: swashbuckling stuff
Disadvantages: language
...This is one of the earliest remaining fragments of the French language and it can be seen in the original at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. It is a truly genial story about a crusade which goes wrong and Charlemagne’s nephew Roland is left behind in a mountain pass to defend the Christians from the Pagans. He dies a martyr and Charlemagne eventually avenges the death of his nephew. This is an epic poem with rousing language and strikingly bold and gruesome depictions of the battle scenes. It is also a story of deception, honour and valliance. It should be read to show where modern epic stories and films come from in their magnitude and boldness....

Skiing in Voss
Review of Voss by
sdonaldson
Advantages: Not very far to travel
Disadvantages: Very expensive
...Although Voss is a very small town located about 1-2 hours drive from Bergen airport it offers some of the best skiing conditions I have skied in. There are passes available for the cable car and ski lifts which range from one day passes to monthly passes, there is a restaurantsituated at the top of the mountain where meals are served all day. Although much of the food is quite expensive there is a wide variety of meals available. The ski slopes cover the whole mountain with slopes which can be used by a wide ability level of skiers the ski lifts are situated so that there is at most 50 metres between the top of the lifts and the start of the slope. There is skiing equiptment available from a wide variety of shops in close proximity of the main centre of Voss with all equiptment needed provided. Instructors on the mountain speak...

Rich in Culture
Review of Vietnam - In General by
Autumn-Swallow
Advantages: Rich in Culture and Cheap
Disadvantages: non
...Please don't associate 'war' with Vietnam.
It is actually a very special place with a great bland of culture. However, their culture is dominated by those of Chinese with a good blend of local culture. For example, their traditional costume are more like the Chinese, their langauage is completely unique but with a great influence of Chinese language.
This country has a very good scenery especially the mountains, rivers and padi fields. The food is fantastic. The most tempting thing for back packers i would suppose is the low living cost in Vietnam.
This country is definitely a place for travellers who are not only interested in sight seeing but also to explore the culture and the lifestyle of the local....

Three for the price of one
Review of Atlanta by
LBoy
Advantages: American lifestyle
Disadvantages: You'll put on weight rapidly
...of food on the big plate (plus the giant glass of ice tea) would be enough to feed a family of three! ...This is America!
Atlanta is the state capital of Georgia. It is famous for the epic 'Gone With The Wind', Martin Luther King Jr., former president Jimmy Carter, Olympics 1996, CNN and Coca-Cola. A local pharmacist developed Coca-Cola originally as a headache remedy some 115 years ago. There is a modern museum 'The World of Coca-Cola' situated near Peachtree Street (Atlanta's high street). Another main attraction is the Stone Mountain. It is the world's largest exposed granite mountain. A sculpture of three giant figures of civil war heroes is carved on the rock face of the mountain. We climbed to the top of the mountain via a large cable car, and had very spectacular views around the mountain.
If you want a taster for American lifestyle...

Best A-Void-ed
Review of Touching the Void - Joe Simpson by
Soho_Black
Advantages: It's probably a great read if you're a mountaineer
Disadvantages: I'm not
...is the mountaineering part, where it’s two men against a mountain. The second is the descent, where there are two individual stories of men battling the circumstances as well as the elements. As the author and, in fairness, the one with the larger obstacles, the majority of this second part of the book focuses on Joe Simpson as his battle for survival against the odds.
Unfortunately, although it’s an amazing story, it’s not one that’s terribly well told. The first section is full of technical language, used to describe the hazards of the mountain and the tools they use in their attempts to defeat it. If you’re not used to climbing mountains, this section is likely to leave you largely confused, as it did me. I had no idea what a cornice or a spindrift was before reading the book and only the vaguest idea of what a crampon does and my knowledge has...

radical high
Review of Whistler, Ski Resort by
joffrey
Advantages: Large vertical drop, modern lifts, N American attitude
Disadvantages: Rain, expense, weekend crowds
...OK, so I couldn't describe a winter sports resort without instantly resorting to "cool" terminology. Bite me.
Snowboarding at Whistler does that to me, not the bite thing, but the hip n' trendy, ridiculous language affliction.
I have been snowboarding at 4 different resorts in France, and Whistler. I did learn to ride in Whistler, and spent a whole season there, so I admit to being biased.....but it is so easily the best place to go. Not only do you have 2 large, and very different mountains to play on, with a modern, efficient lift system, you also have a picturesque, pedestrianised village. Most importantly though you have a different approach to the whole winter sports scene. Each mountain is almost completely open to the public, this is very different to Europe, where each lift tends to service 2-4 runs only. In North America, each...

Whakapapa "family" in native Maori language
Review of Whakapapa by
hunkaspunk
Advantages: not too cold, nice views, close to lakes, beaches etc
Disadvantages: slushy snow in later season, volcanic eruptions!
...Whakapapa is a very fun ski field. I have been skiing there every weekend in the winter from the age of 3 so it is part of my history.
A relatively small ski field compared to those of North America and europe but very different. Whakapapa is situated on Mount Ruapehu in the central North island, an active volcanic mountain hosting one other major ski field, Turoa.
It has only blown up once while I have been alive, and amongst it but it was resonably harmless although very spectacular.
Whakapapa has many slopes of varying degrees of difficulty and an un patrolled area for experts called "black magic". The slopes are nice to ski on and some can be meandering around rock faces etc. The landscape is volcanic rock with some alpine shrubs and grasses. The snow is good when there is a solid base but can get a little slushy on a hot day where...

Its the less known places that surprise
Review of Kranjka Gora (Slovenia) by
owenberg
Advantages: Beautiful mountain scenery, very cheap, freindly locals
Disadvantages: Having to travel to do things other than ski, walk or cycle
...with an English tour operator, there are bound to be lots of tours that you can go on if walking isn't your idea of a good holiday/
The trips available to us were a day trip to some huge, beautiful caves, a tour of the area, and Lake Bled, amongst many others. We also took the opportunity to hire some bikes (as I am not a fan of mountain walking!). The bikes were very cheap, but of good quality (well they have to be to so you can go up and down mountains!).
Although English isn't spoken quite as widely as it is in Croatia for instance, it is easy enough to get by without the language, so there are no worries there.
The country is also very cheap too! I borrowed the equivalent of £10 off my parents, for things like bottles of coke (and I drink quite a lot) and I cambe back with around £2.50 after a week... so you can see how cheap it is!
Town...
