..., to South Bridge is heat sinked, so I wanted the RAM to be as well. This helps disipate the heat away from the chips. As things get hot, the resistance in them increases, this means they run slower. Although this is arguably un-noticable in computer components, it still prolongs the life of any component to keep it cool. This is because continuous expansion and contraction weakens the materials. Physics lesson over, on to the performance. The bench marks I have for testing out the speed of my computer were left wonering what they hell had happend to them after going through this machine and it's RAM. They effectively gave readings which were off the scale, they couldn't make sense of it at all! So it is pretty fast methinks! ...The GA-965P-DS3 is Gigabyte's medium range Motherboard supporting all of Intel's Current processors as of 08/2007. The board was created using the Intel P965 Express North bridge and ICH8 South bridge chip sets. The ICH8 South bridge chip set has one drawback which is that it only supports SATA devices, with no support for IDE which is kind of a downside although SATA Hard Drives can be bought rather cheap nowadays and are much faster than IDE Drives. Since it is using the P965 Express chip set, the motherboard supports all Socket LGA775 type processors, DDR2 RAM modules operating in Dual Channel mode up to 800MHz which is 6400, although you can use UNSUPPORTED 8500, you just need to power up the motherboard with some low voltage RAM first, as well as PCI-E X16 graphics cards in single card mode. ...even a novice could set this up in a few hours with that instruction manual. It includes a huge fold out real size photo of the motherboard with every bit labeled and instructions on what to do. ------------------------- Quick complaint ------------------------- They've attached a little "MSI" symbol on a plate resing in the north bridge heat sink. This is loose and will rattle when the computer is on. Also note that screws for most northbridge fans are too small to screw any fans to it. So, if you get a rattling sound, you'll have to super glue the little plate to the heat sink. This is perfectly safe and perfectly doable. It wont stop you being able to remove the heat sink at all.
