PC2700 256mb RAM
Review of OCZ Basic DRAM 512 MB PC3200 by
roy.jennings1
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Loads of problems
...I came across OCZ RAM products after purchasing a new PC from a UK web based company called PC-DEPOT.CO.UK.
During the initial set-up of the PC, and installing of software, the PC often rejected the installation throwing up VxD errors and System crashes.
Eventually the PC became a working unit.
After just a few days I was forever getting system crashes and freezes. So I contacted the suppliers, who in turn sent a small program by email to test the fitted RAM.
This program proved that the OCZ (elixir) RAM PC2700 256mb was in fact the fault.
They agreed that if I removed it myself and sent it back they would replace it (foc). Before I could do this the PC crashed beyond recovery.
SO I purchased replacement RAM from a local supplier of a totally different make.
Having had to format the HARD DRIVE, and start from scratch loading WINDOWS...

Crucial to get good memory
Review of Crucial DRAM 512 MB PC2700 by
cootuk
Advantages: A quality brand name you can trust
Disadvantages: not the fastest memory timings
...When it comes to adding ram to a system, many people choose whatever their local PC shop has or whatever is cheapest. Ok, similar ram sticks may theoretically have the same overall speed ratings, but manufacturers like Crucial produce higher quality memory. It's not only the memory chip that matters on a stick of ram, but also the electrical design of the wafer stick it sits on, and the level of quality control. Many PC crashing problems can be related directly back to low quality ram. As there usually isn't a massive price difference between Crucial ram and no-name generic ram, why risk an unstable system?
Crucial have a comprehensive online website along with a good help guide that can select exactly which sticks of ram your PC will take.
Delivery is usually within a couple of days, and the sticks come in an individual box, well...

Memory is Memory!
Review of Kingston ValueRAM DRAM 256 MB by
JonFeathers
Advantages: Good Make, Good Value
Disadvantages: None, Its memory.
...At the end of the day memory is memory, whether it is a generic brand or Kingston or Crucial isn't really going to affect things that much.
However when choosing your memory be aware of what kind of memory it is you are choosing.
The first thing is MB - MegaByte. This could be 128, 256, 512 and so on the more Megabyte you have the quicker your system should run.
As this is 256MB you have a good size for running normal everyday tools such as Outlook, Internet and Word.
However if you are into CAD drawing, using your PC as server or intense games you might want to look at 512MB.
The next thing is memory speed. In this case it is 333mhz (PC2700).
It could be 266mhz or 400mhz. Obviouslt the higher the better. However in order to really utilise this you need to have a processor that has a front side bus of the same or faster...

Good middle of the range RAM
Review of Crucial DRAM 256 MB PC2700 by
J.Gamgee
Advantages: Reliable, Good value
Disadvantages: Not the fastest memory avaible
...to buy direct from Crucial, by doing this you get free postage and easy RMA's if there should be a problem – and Crucial do have a good reputation. I have always found Crucial to have excellent service and have received this RAM and other orders from them in as little at 16 hours (and that it free postage).
In conclusion I would recommend Crucial to anybody looking to upgrade a system or building a new system. It may be worth paying the extra for PC 3200 RAM if you have a motherboard which will support this speed or are intending to get one as the difference in price is minimal.
Guide to acronyms:
RAM - Random Access Memory (the temporary storage on your computer)
DDR- Double Data Rate (the ram effectively has double the data rate (except its not actually double in practice))
FSB- Front side Bus (The speed of the interface between your...

Great upgrade for older Athlon based PCs
Review of AMD Athlon XP 2400+ / 2 GHz processor by
danishcake5
Advantages: Fastest 266mhz Athlon
Disadvantages: Not upgradable
...I used this chip to upgrade my AthlonXP 1700. The performance numbers would suggest a simple 40% speed increase, but for some applications, such as loading windows, my system obviously suffered from other bottlenecks.
As for games, Knights of the Old Republic enjoyed a marked increase in frame rates, which is always nice.
With some decent borrowed ram, I've managed to run this with a FSB of 190 mhz, which brings the performance up to roughly AthlonXP 2800 levels. I wouldn't want to try this without PC2700 or better memory though. Bear in mind I have a fairly chunky heatsink attached. At normal speeds, the bios reports the CPU to run at around 38C after some intensive use.
So far I've had no stability problems, though in my experience it tends to come from the Ram anyway.
The processor has a thermal output of around 68 watts, so make...
