Riot City Blues
Review of Riot City Blues - Primal Scream by
bluemackaw
Advantages: Another Great Album from the Scream!
Disadvantages: Not for you if you didn't like 'Give Out But Don't Give Up!'
...Primal Scream revamp their 'Give Out But Don't Give Up' era with a new straight forward Rock 'n' Roll album! With catchy tunes and straight from the hip riffs and lyrics! Bobby Gillespie does what he does best, dishing out tune after tune of pure Rolling Stones-Stooges inspirited music whilst Mani and co beat out hard, simple and honest beats that truly complement the vocals! Gone are the lyrics denoting the new fascist world order apparent in XTRMNTR and Evil Heat and replaced with a new upbeat rock that is a refreshing change from the aforementioned (but equally brilliant) albums! Primal Scream have entertained us now for two decades, moving with the times and always pulling another dough nut out of the bag when least expected! This one is no different and is simply an excellent, fun but hard hitting album!...

DIRTY GENIUS
Review of Dirty Hits - Primal Scream by
dan_wales
Advantages: collects their classic singles on one record
Disadvantages: weak tracks from the latest album
...Firstly this isn't technically a greatist hits set if you are a completist because it ignores the two earliest Primal Scream albums 'Sonic Flower Groove' and 'Primal Scream'. Instead it focuses on tracks from 'Screamdelica', 'Give out but don't give in'. 'Vanishing Point' . 'XTRMNTR' and 'Evil Heat'
Primal Scream are fronted by Bobby Gillespie who was previously the drummer for Jesus and the the Mary Chain. Other members have included Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine fame, Mani from the Stone Roses and Stephen Duffy, ex-Felt. Across their career they have embraced dance music and married that to their classic rock sound.
The principle problem with this album is that anyone who owns 'Screamadelica' and 'XTRMNTR' has no real need for this. The latest album 'Evil Heat' was hopelessly bad and lends nothing of interest...

3 simply fantastic days!
Review of Leeds Festival (England) by
radarmaker
Advantages: Great music, great facilities
Disadvantages: Not great weather (sometimes)
...Leeds Festival is one of the offshoots of the fairly famous Reading Festival (the other being Glasgow Green.) Having looked at the bill beforehand, I thought I would enjoy myself. But I didn’t imagine just how good it would be.
I started off on Saturday by seeing Cay and Daphne & Celeste (oh yes!) on the Main Stage, and Clint Boon Experience on the Evening Session Stage.
Sunday I watched At The Drive-In, Beck and The Delgados, Monday Primal Scream, Oasis (to see if they would split up) and Grandaddy.
All in all, a top bill, with facilities to match....

World, please wake up and listen to XTRMNTR
Review of Xtrmntr - Primal Scream by
bluemackaw
Advantages: One of the best pieces of music ever written
Disadvantages: For Shepherds not Sheep
...With a completely new direction from their previous incarnations as pure Rock 'n' Rollers and New Wave Psychedelics, Primal Scream take a strong political stance on the New World Order, attacking governments, multinational corporations, the military, the police and of course the Americans, condemning them all as Neo-Nazis. With 'Mani' from the Stone Roses taking an active part in helping to write the songs, the bass lines are absolutely sublime. Not surprising considering where he did his apprenticeship. The opening track 'Kill All Hippies' is absolutely flawless, it literally rips into your room from your speakers and 'must' be played loud to be fully appreciated. It sets the scene for the rest of the album, which doesn't let up and is really angry, especially with 'Swastika Eyes', perhaps paralleled to 'Never Mind The Bollocks...

disco rock techno soul
Review of Primal Scream by
mookiepunk
Advantages: Life afirmining rock n roll
Disadvantages: you may feel the need to kill a pop idol
...Jan 20th 2004. What a night, the mighty 'Scream' back in Brum and me lucky enough to get down there and enjoy.
I hate the bloody Academy, it really is a scuzz encrusted, alcohol, coated, toilet. I can still feel my feet sticking to the floor with every step I took. Still it was worth it just to see and hear the wonderful, essential, Primal Scream. I went along with two friends, one who loved 'Screamadelica' (the trippy clubbers album) and 'Vanishing Point' (the laid back stoners album); and the other loved XTRMNTR (death by guitar and beats) and 'Evil Heat' (more of the same), both came away very happy. I came away knowing that I’d seen one of the most important bands of the last fifteen years. A band that’s not afraid to take risks, a band that often crosses musical boundaries (jangly indie, dance music, rock n roll, dub and punk rock...

THE PRIMAL SCREAMADELICA
Review of Screamadelica - Primal Scream by
dan_wales
Advantages: an incredible fusion of rock and dance music
Disadvantages: none!
...Primal Scream are the ultimate fantasy rock band. They couldn't be more perfect had they been created in a factory.Through their career they've embraced techno,Rolling Stones esque blues, acid house,rock-abilly,indie and electro. They are the rock band that make you want to dance. The white indie band that don't seem out of place in a club. This is their third album and marks a massive departure from the first two records. After leaving the Jesus and The Mary Chain, Bobby Gillespie formed Primal Scream with the aim of making classic rock with a twist. The first two records 'Primal Scream' and 'Sonic Flower Groove' were standard rock affairs and totallyout of place in the early 1990's, when dance was the ruling musical genre and ecstacy its driving force.
So Primal Scream, rather than react against this movement, embraced dance music...

No More Robert Plant on The Next One
Review of Evil Heat - Primal Scream by
Champ666
Advantages: Great Electronic Rock and a Roll
Disadvantages: Possibly Robert Plant
...The album kicks off with "Deep Hit Of Morning Sun", which is a fantastic bit of psycheadelia, featuring throbbing trance like synths with eary guitar work topped off with a haunting vocal with even more haunting harmonies, it pushes you into the song and slips you in to the general grove of the thing. Then off to "Miss Lucifer" which bounces you about with dancey beats and a fairly standard rock song structure, this is really nothing special for Primal Scream, but no one else does dance rock fission like they do. "Autobahn 66" is a different matter though taking a huge chunk of Kraftwerk's minimalist electronic genus it is very reminiscent of legendary Krautrock gods NEU!, a sublimely hypnotic mixture of minimalist synths and electronic drumbeats with haunting guitar work and haunting vocals, it is fantastic stuff. Then we are onto...

Great CD on Cover
Review of Q by
MattSlat
Advantages: Free CD
Disadvantages:
...I have a bought Q magazine a few times but don't find it a particularly interesting read.
What I do get it for is the free Cd's you get on the front cover!
You normally get about 15 tracks, most of which are by well known artists like Primal Scream, Texas and Blur to name but a few.
To be frank, they are a lot better then many albums I have heard and payed good money for!
The magazine itself contains lots of reviews about the latest albums and singles aswell as interviews with bands.
If I were more interested in that sort of thing I can imagine it being a good read.
They even have a cool website now at http://www.qonline.co.uk/...

prml scrm xtrmntr
Review of Xtrmntr - Primal Scream by
dsra999
Advantages: great production an original sound!
Disadvantages: as its political it puts people off which is a shame :(
...Primal Scream were the first rock group i really liked and as a major fan of dance music it was strange for me to buy this album, i now have all their albums and i really like them, XTRMNTR however was the first Primal Scream album i purchased.
As a fan of dance music the reason i liked this album in particular is not only because there is a mix by the chemical brothers of Swastika eyes, but because i really like the use of crazy sounds and hard hitting bass lines, in addition to this the drummer is also very good and all guitars are amazing, altogether a real crisp sound.
The album has a total of 11 tracks so is worth its value especially when you here how soild each track is, this is a very consistent album i cannot name one bad track.
The first track Kill All Hippies starts off with an eerie feeling and the voice of a female...

A nice little phone
Review of Answercall telephone by
Suse
Advantages: Cheap, many functions
Disadvantages: Only comes in white
...We bought our Answercall from Argos, and we chose it because it was cheap. As it turns out though, it was a pretty good buy, as for twenty quid you get loads of useful functions. It records the date, time and all that, and has an answerphone function. You don't even have to programme in the message if you don't want to. You can access your messages remotely, and there is also an extremely odd function called Room Monitor, whereby you can ring up your phone from elsewher and listen to what is going on in the room. To see if the burglars are listening to your Primal Scream CD's, I suppose. It also has a back up battery, ten two-touch memories and three one-touch memories, which is quite useful. Altogether, something of a bargain....
