You will laugh out loud
Review of Private Eye by
aprose
Advantages: Still very funny
Disadvantages: has lost its edge
...Private Eye was founded by the brightest stars of sixties satire including the genius that was Peter Cook. At that time, what they were doing had never been done before. Politicians and royalty who were at that time treated with reverence by the mainstream media suddenly found themselves fair game. Of course the sixties were a time of massive social change and Private Eye is a major symbol of this.
The years have not been particularly kind to Private Eye and it is now very much part of the very establishment that it has never ceased to attack. Most of the magazine can be read as a kind of office canteen of the political and media classes where gossip is traded and scores are settled. This has some advantages. The ‘ Eye can go much further than the mainstream media in exposing details of the scandals that it publishes...

great war film
Review of Saving Private Ryan DVD by
JoeDaunt
Advantages: great film, full of action
Disadvantages: none
..., but it has historical precedent dating back to the Civil War. Some critics of the film have labelled the central characters stereotypes. If that is so, this movie gives stereotypes a good name: Tom Sizemore as the deft sergeant, Edward Burns as the hotheaded Private Reiben, Barry Pepper as the religious sniper, Adam Goldberg as the lone Jew, Vin Diesel as the oversize Private Caparzo, Giovanni Ribisi as the soulful medic and Jeremy Davies, who as a meek corporal gives the film its most memorable performance.
The movie is as heavy and realistic as Spielberg's Oscar-winning Schindler's List, but it's more kinetic. Spielberg and his ace technicians (the film won five Oscars: editing (Michael Kahn), cinematography (Janusz Kaminski), sound, sound effects and directing) deliver battle sequences that wash over the eyes and hit the gut. The violence...

Save Ryan please
Review of Saving Private Ryan DVD by
Rach_79
Advantages: Powerful story
Disadvantages: Goes on for nearly 3 hours
...Having just watched this film i felt compelled to come on here and write an opinion about the film "Saving private Ryan"... another masterpiece by Steven Speilberg.
Saving private Ryan is a World War two drama which is seen through the eyes of an army squad as they launch into battle on D-day which is where the film begins. In the opening scenes we see the men prepare to battle and they all launch themselves onto the beach where we see them shot and injured.. a very powerful and memorable opening scene for a film.
The injuries that these men sustain are beyond belief, we see body parts scattered all over the beach, limbs hanging off and body parts missing, dead soldiers and blood everywhere.
Tom Hanks plays Captain John Miller and he is the man who takes his troops into the battle field to the enemy line to find Private James Ryan...

Riggs and Murtagugh are Back
Review of Lethal Weapon 4 (Wide Screen) by
elspeth334
Advantages: Great action
Disadvantages: none
...Everyones favorite cops Riggs( Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh( Danny Glover) are back for yet another action packed thriller. Of all four I think this is the funniest and best of the series. In follows their exploits involving illegal immigrants and combat with the Asian Triad. Joe Pesci is hilarious as a private eye and some of his one liners threaten to steal the show. It is an all round great film lots of action ,suspense, and humour. Mel Gibson who must appeal to 95% of women was at his sexy best.Heres hoping there a 5th...

Review of Ricky Martin - Ricky Martin by
2Good2BTrue
Advantages: Ricky Martin...very nice
Disadvantages: Ricky Martin's voice....not very nice
...I have to admit, I bought this album because I fancied the pants off the lovely Ricky (let's face it he is nice to look at). I suppose he's the male equivalent of Britney Spears - to look at not to be listened to. There are some good tracks on this album, his duet with Madonna being the best. "Livin' La Vida Loca" obviously stands out too, but "Private Emotion" is also a lovely track, and "Spanish Eyes" is lovely in either language. There's just one problem with Ricky Martin....he can't sing. Harsh but true. There are some nice pics in the inlay though!...

Who watches the watchers?
Review of Private Eye by
cootuk
Advantages: Satirical, funny, a little bit sick
Disadvantages: Not always the truth, but close enough?
...Private Eye has been a thorn in the side of many governments, people, and industries over the years. The magazine (£1.30 per issue) dishes the dirt that those in power would rather you didn't know. Anyone and anything is fair game.
The magazine is packed with cartoons, humourous true stories, satirical fiction, gossip of the great and mighty, and exposees of things that are going on in the world around us. They campaign, they expose, they hound, and they sometimes get sued.
Current targets for example include the long running MMR vaccine, Harrods boss Mohamed Fayed, government PFI contracts, and Iraq WMD.
All are extremely controversial and expose the 'spin' used in todays society.
Not every story is true, but most have enough truth in them for people not to want things exposed to that level in a Court of Law. Some of the cartoons...

Wonderfully Satirical and Informative Magazine
Review of Private Eye by
Sonatine
Advantages: Very funny, sharp & informative; good value, biting satire, shocking revelations
Disadvantages: not enough pages, legitimacy of articles.
...Private Eye is published once every two weeks and just recently celebrated its 1000th edition as one of the UKs top satirical & investigative magazines for many years.
Published on A4 sized pulped paper and printed primarily in black & white to save on costs, Private Eye is a magazine that could easily be overlooked on the burdgeoning shelves at the newsagents as it tries to compete against all the snazzy, contemporary coloured & glossy brochures.
Edited by political & social commentator, Ian Hislop (also of Have I Got News For You, fame) , the magazine (or "sad comic" as cynics sometimes call it) offers good value for its £1.20 and 40 pages.
Inside you'll find articles on serious contemporary issues of the day such as Railtrack/Hatfield, MMR Vaccines, NHS & local council investigations into sleaze, double-handers & back-stabbing etc...

Opticians - Health vs Commercialisation
Review of Member Advice on Opticians by
Connoisseur_Haggler
Advantages: there are still a lot of dedicated Opticians
Disadvantages: none - but marketing your health by executives may lead to damage long term, and boost company profits
...Note: I introduced this general subject category to Ciao on 21 December 2000. It is not intended to be about any specific named Opticians as there are "specific" named categories for Chains of Optical Groups at Ciao. This is a general Optician's category related to Opticians and Optometry in general, the term for category was agreed with Ciao and this was the first opinion.
Health v's Commercialisation related to Optics:
The health of one’s eyes is of the up most importance. There are a vast range of Optician’s to choose from these days from the small private optometrist to large multinational chains. This is a personal opinion on the general state I feel the field of Optometry has got to in the United Kingdom.
So you are walking down the High Street...

these guys were tough
Review of Saving Private Ryan DVD by
attupattu1521
Advantages: excellent storyline
Disadvantages: none
....I.'s.
During the course of a story that runs to nearly three hours, we get to know them all from their actions in the heat of the moment, to their midnight confessions when their true age and life experience seems more evident.
It is perhaps glib to say that the opening D-Day landing scenes are actually like being on those Normandy beaches but they are quite horrific and terrifying, making the real thing seem almost unbearable to modern eyes.
Saving Private Ryan has everything you might need to grip the attention and take you on an emotional journey that is hard to forget. Obviously, it has Oscar stamped all over, yet also has an edgy, subversive quality to go with a style that dazzles the eye, as the simple but effective story burns into the memory and touches the heart....

my own private island
Review of Dealing with Agrophobia by
mayansoko
Advantages: n/a
Disadvantages: n/a
...’s based on my experiences to give people an ides of how it feels to be me.
My own private island
My own private island on the edge of oblivion
Where the eyes swim freely in a sea of judgment
Where every tree has a thousand ears blowing in the breeze
And the mouths walk sideways over the rocks and sand
My cloths are made from a lifetime of pain
And my skin is red from the glare of the sun
The only place I feel safe is under my rock
The eyes and the ears still watch and listen
But they can’t see or hear
Id stay here for ever and a day but I’m not aloud
I have to get out and face the world
And fear...
