Quake III or Unreal
Review of Quake III: Arena (PC) by  Garza007

Advantages: Good graphics
Disadvantages: Lacks something...

...Well, both Quake III and Unreal Tounrament are magnificent games, but personally I prefer Unreal, because the gameplay is far more better... why is it better? well, you may think that Quake II and Unreal are the same kind of games, and they are but Unreal just seems to have that extra thing, that extra UMPH! over Quake III... Quake III has stunning graphics and sound, but it still lacks something, that something that Unreal has... I can't explain it properly... But I do have to say that Unreal is better all round than Quake III... even though Unreal requires a good video card, it's still very good... So if you're stuck in a situation between Quake III and Unreal Tournament, then I say choose Unreal Tournament... Go on you know you want to!!!... Read review

Starting to show it's age
Review of Quake (PC) by  yhwman

Advantages: Good gameplay, multiplayer is great
Disadvantages: Things are all a bit random in single player

...Like Doom, when Quake came out it shook the gaming world. Whereas Doom was ‘two and a half D’, Quake was full on proper 3D. In the light of Quake 3/Unreal Tournament the original Quake looks a bit tatty, but get yourself a copy of GLQuake and the difference is a lot less, as GLQuake will make use of your 3D card. Gameplay wise it’s a bit of a mixed bag – you stumble around between futuristic ‘base’ style levels to castles without any particular reason. Quake 2 was the best single player game, it has the back story (Not a great one, but at least it makes SOME sense) and sense of progression that Quake doesn’t have. However, deathmatch Quake is simply superb, easily beating Quake 2, if not Quake 3 Arena. I think you can get this game in a double pack with Ultimate Doom now – if you see it pick it up and marvel at a piece of gaming history.... Read review

Good for multiplayer
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by  CC2000

Advantages: Good graphics, multiplayer and bot AI
Disadvantages: Poor single player mode

...Quake III Arena is a great improvement over Quake II in many ways. The graphics a lot better, providing you have a good computer, and a 3dfx card, and the game has a new array of weapons and powerups. Like its prequel, Quake II, the game can be played on your own, with others over a network or direct link, or using a modem. Unlike Quake II, where the single player mode had objectives and a storyline, Quake III uses arenas with one or more computer controlled bots in, and you have to get up to a certain amount of frags (kills) to win. Although this can be good it leaves you a little disappointed, and completing all the levels provides no satisfaction. Although I enjoyed this game I got bored with it after I played Unreal Tournament, which is a lot better. Overall, Quake III is a great shoot-em-up game for multiplayer, but if you don... Amzing
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by  cicymru

Advantages: see article
Disadvantages: see article

...Quake two was a game that should have been difficult to beat but those guys at ID have done it again. For a first person perspective game it is fantastic the only downfall being the spec of the PC that you have to have to run it. The graphics are out of this world and the speed and fluitity of the characters is great. When I shot someone up close for the first time I had to stand back as the blood dripped down the inside of the screen it was that realistic that I thought I was going to get covered. On the net its just as good but be warned there are some real Quake experts out there who kicked my butt - buy it.... Read review

Quake 3: The best first person fragger
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by  NOFEAR

Advantages: Great game engine, stunning graphics, loads of mods to download
Disadvantages: You need to download mods to get the most out of it

...Id are by far the best at making first person games. Take Wolfenstein for example. An amazing game in those days. They followed with Doom, and then Doom 2. Next was Quake, followed by Quake 2 and now Quake 3 Arena. Quake 3 Arena is meant to be played online or over a LAN, though you can play it against the computer, but bewared, the AI isn't really very good. There are four game types; deathmatch (kill everyone), team deathmatch (kill everyone on the opposite team), capture the flag (capture and bring back the flag) and tournament (1 on 1 tournament). The game has an advanced graphics engine, which gives you stunning graphics and effects without hurting your processor that much. The engine is the first engine ever to allow completely round edges. The game on its own wont last that long in terms of days, but there are a host of mods... Read review

What a scortcher
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by  KingWaz

Advantages: Great graphics + multi-player
Disadvantages: No single-player missions

...If you thought that there was no way Quake could be made better, you were shocked when Quake 2 was released. Surely Quake 2 couldn't get better, well it has with Quake 3. This follow-up to Quake 2 has based itself on what has become one of the most popular things with Quake 2 players, that being multi-player internet play. The game has no single player missions however, BOT play is fully functional and with many modifications around, you will not be disapointed as missions are not required in a game of this calibor. The characters in the game are extremely unique, particularly the character of Orbb (a running eyeball!). You can even be Orbb if you want! The only downer is you'll need a good graphics card to run it as the graphics in the game are exteremly demanding (although you can lower the tone fo the graphics). The game also has... Read review

The best game engine ever written
Review of Quake III Arena (PC) by  Athon_Solo

Advantages: Cheap, premade engine, easy to program, versatile
Disadvantages: you have to distribute it free of charge

...Everyone knows that Quake 3 is unarguably the best fps on the planet, but I want to talk about the other side of Quake 3 - the game engine itself - which makes it THE games programmers tool of choice when they cant be bothered to code their own engine :-) As an amatur programmer, I never would have got into C if it hadn't been for Quake. The versatility of the game engine and the fact that it was so easy to make changes to the game has made it probably the game with the longest shelf-life to date. AFAIK its still on sale in the shops, and u can probably get it for £5 at your local games store. The game then developed to Quake 2, and finally (unfotunately its true - "there will be NO Quake 4" - ID Software) Quake 3 Arena - the multiplayer game for the 21st century. Its versatile, its easy to program and finally - the game code is FREE... Read review

Quake Baby Quake
Review of id software - Quake 3 arena by  SidneyJames

Advantages: Excellent gameplay, Fantastic Graphics
Disadvantages: Solidly diffucult on Higher Skill levels

...The excitement than filled me when I heard that ID were going to release a third Quake game was overwhelming. It fact it was almost too much and I regularly had to bath in cold water to keep myself under control. Then I heard it was going to be a multiplayer game only and fear began to spread through me. At the time I had no modem, no Internet access and believed I there would be no way in which I would be able to play Quake III. Oh how wrong I was. It is now almost two years since Quake III was released and still I am a regular player. Great games like Deus Ex have been completed and left to gather dust in the cupboard, waiting the day I finally take them down to the local second hand computer ganes store and trade them in. The question is why has Quake III survived the trails of time, whilst other games have fallen by the wayside... Read review

Is Q2 the best first person shooter ever made
Review of Quake II (PC) by  Sagramore

Advantages: Fast, Fun, MAD!
Disadvantages: none, at all!

...Quake 2 is the daddy of all modern day first person shooters (FPS). It was the eagerly awaited sequel to Quake and it did not dissapoint. For those who did not enjoy the missions, there was the flawless and incredibly easy to set up multiplayer option that was very playable on any connection speed. Then came the modifications!!! I have played a variety of mods for Quake 2, all created for multiplayer, and only a few have been good. One was KOTS (King of the Server) unfortuneately, even though this mod was incredible with its experience point system, the main server was taken down. The best mod however has to be Action Quake 2. This mod with Q2 must have created the BEST game ever to come out on the PC. I have been playing it for over two years now and still am not bored of it!!! All that i can say is that with modifications included... Read review

Quake 2 Rocks!
Review of Quake II (PC) by  Screm

Advantages: awesome sound effects, cool music, awesome graphics, great atmosphere
Disadvantages: too easy, even on hard

...The Sound effects are just amazing. The guys at id did a very good job with the SoundFX. You'll hear everything, from the sound of the wind, to the so-much-hated "Locator updated" female computer voice. The musical score is also very good, with Rob Zombie opening the game, and then SonicMayhem doing the rest of 'em. The songs are very good, and make your adrenaline pump, but I must admit that I turn it off, so I add more ambience to the game. I liked the music, but nothing compares to the old midi files of ol'daddy Doom. That was the right kind of music for such a game, but still the songs on the CD are good. The multiplayer side to Quake2 is the thing that is gonna give it the extended gameplay it deserves - along with the countless mods to appear. Fast and furious, the Quake2 deathmatches never fail to provide. The single player side... Read review
