Advantages: great image quality from a tiny camera!
Disadvantages: noisy lens mechanism due to it being such a big lens in such a small body

...Picked this up nearly 3 months ago now as my third compact digital after having a kodak for my first then a canon IXUS 500 after that. I also shoot with a Canon EOS 300d so was looking for great image quality, and a general upgrade from my IXUS. I went for the R7 because it starts up and shoots so fast its perfect as a little point and shoot. The zoom level is brilliant and I don't even use digital zoom. As far as settings go its got all that you would expect in terms of the automatic options and then for the more advanced users the array of custom options are far beyond any compact digital I have used in the past. Its even got manual focus! I've not really found any faults with the camera so far, it does everything I need and more, looks really cool and is really easy to use.... Read review

Advantages: optical zoom, macro, stylish, not expensive, speedy

...The Ricoh Caplio R7 was released in August 2007. This camera has an amazing 7x optical zoom ( basically how much it can zoom when capturing an image) which is an exceptional amount considering it's size and price. It also has 8 megapixels along with a 2.7 inch screen with 230k pixel resolution.It weighs161 grams (including battery) and is very compact, you would really notice it in your bag or your pocket. One of my favourite features is the 'Vibration correction system' which encourages sharper images( compensates for handshakes), but this doesn't actually very successful. This is a point and shoot camera so it doesn't have as many exposure contrals as there could be in othe camera. ...I bought the ricoh 6000 this week, I've been searching shops and the net trying all the forums for info on the best camera, but reading these you would never buy one as theres always a couple compaining about every model going. Anyway i purchased the 6000 I only wanted to spend about £300 but this was £360 but came with AC adapter, 8meg carf plus an extra 16 mb card. It takes great pics(only used it in auto mode upto now) but theres so many settings you can choose I must read the manual that came with it. You get loads of software with it besides ricoh camera utility there is Arcsofts Photo Fantasy, Photo Impression and Photo Montage all 2000. Oh and you can also do short AVI videos with it.... After 6 months of daily use I have yet to have a buffer underun, for a price of just under £100 this machine is well worth considering. I actually paid about £30 more than this when I bought mine. As with other Ricoh CD-RW drives, maintains a maximum read speed of 32x for CD-R and CD-RW media, as well as for CD-ROM. Because CD-RW media has a lower reflectivity than CD-ROM or CD-R media, amplification circuits are more susceptible to noise. This fact causes difficulties with high-speed CD-RW reading, and currently most CD-ROM drives, even 40x drives, can only read CD-RW media at about 20x at best. ...battery charging and replacing that make digitals annoying when you spot something that demands a photograph right away. I've used all kinds of 35mm film in the Ricoh and have a preference for bulk Ektachrome, rolled on in small quantities. Producing one's own slides from such film in a little developing tank, gives an insight to the photographic process that is a learning curve all of its own. The camera is heavy by modern standards - but just convince yourself that weight is quality in this type of situation.! It has the usual facility for tripods, and flash, and all the range of colour and special effects filters. This is the system that allows for real creativity - not just standard digital alteration. I use the digital snappers very happily - see review on FujiPix 610 - but that Ricoh was photography as real art.!... Read review

...and not something you need an entire back pack to carry around. As pointed out to me by the professional in the shop i bought this camera from the optical zoom on the camera is almost unparalled in the market of compact cameras, and at the time of writing there are very few cameras even from Sony etc that have anything even near to 7.1x optical zoom. I have taken pictures from great distance away and the pictures produced have been brilliant with no loss in quality whatsoever. In conclusion, this camera is outstanding for the price, and if you search around you can buy cheap memory cards to go in it which lowers the price even further. In the case of this camera you aren't paying for a brand name and the image that comes with said brand name, but you are paying for a quality lense, and excellent build quality in what i see as a success for Ricoh!... ...After doing some research on the web I purchased an RR120 a few years ago to take on holiday. Picture quality was good and it seemed a good buy. My farther-in-law liked the look of it and also bought one. Three months later he had to send his back after it started clicking then stopped working. Ricoh sent a replacement which worked for just under a year before the same thing happened to that. Mine developed the same fault after about 18 months so I took it apart to locate the fault. The auto focus/zoom intermediate transfer gearing is made of cheap plastic and is a push-fit with nothing to secure it in place. If the camera gets a slight - and I mean slight - knock in the wrong place one of the pinions pops out of place.
