Smarties
~~~~~~~
Smarties are sugar coated chocolate sweets that come in 8 different colours - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Lilac, Pink, Brown & Blue. Personally as I'm a girlie girl pink was always my favourite, and although all the Smarties taste the same, I used to stay away from 'boy' colours like green and blue, which my mum was thankful for!! The blue smarties used to contain a high amount of additives and used to send children into hyperactive mode, they were removed for a short amount of time, but have now returned and all the colours and now additive free. 307 tubes eaten per minute in the UK, proving they are very popular, and still ever as popular as they used to be.
Why so many E numbers...Smarties have the answer
Review of Smarties Chocolate Bar by
Fruity_Tart
Advantages: Good quality, novelty
Disadvantages: E numbers galore, tonnes of fat, too small, expensive - and the list goes on...
...Right, I thought I'd better get this op over and done with before I get (back) to my diet tomorrow. :o( And over the last few weeks I've chomped on tonnes of this bar so feel fully equipped to write an op about it - with the help of a further Smarties bar to refresh my memory, of course! The particular bar is the milk chocolate variety as the white chocolate didn't appeal.
The Smarties bar appeared in our shops late last year. Well, they sort of sneaked in as there wasn't a huge advertising campaign, all I remember just before first seeing these was some Smarties 'Go Undercover' posters. I probably wouldn't have even noticed them if Charlotte hadn't saw one on the way to school - the Smartie with the moustache tickled her so much she decided to point the poster out to me every morning and afternoon till the bloody thing was taken...
SMARTIES HEXATUBE
Review of Nestle Smarties Hexatube by
AMYLEIGH123
Advantages: taste nice
Disadvantages: ?
...Nestle Smarties have been a favourite chocolate treat of mines since I was a little girl. Smarties have been around since 1937; although between 1882-1937 Smarties were known as Chocolate Beans. Smarties have gone through a few changes over the years and one of the main changes is the shape and colouring of the tube. When I was younger Smarties used to be sold in a chocolate coloured cylindrical tube which if course had the ever so popular plastic lid which has a letter of the alphabet printed on the base of it. I used to collect the lids and use them to spell out words, or a favourite of mines was to put the lid back onto the tube after I had finished eating the Smarties; then lay the tube on my hand and hit it at the bottom to see how far the lid travelled. Me and my brothers and sisters used to so this quite a lot when we were...
So that's where crushed Smarties go...
Review of Smarties Ice Cream by
eddybennet
Advantages: Authentic smarties...in ice cream!
Disadvantages: Indistinguishable "vanilla" flavour ice cream
...One of my friends is a pedantic fellow. When opening our tub of Smarties ice cream he commented, "ahh, so that's where crushed Smarties go!" I enquired what he meant. "Well, it's very clever," he responded. "Rather than waste product that doesn't pass quality control, they bung it all in the ice cream and claim it was meant to be like that."
Whether he's right or wrong is really beyond the pail. I'm more interested in how this product tastes, and whether it's actually worth buying.
THE TUB
------------
Although it's possible to get Smarties ice cream in single-portion, cardboard "pop-up" style bars, I opted for a great big tub of the stuff. With a quantity of 950ml, this circular ice cream tub is about 15cm high and 10cm in diameter at its widest point. The tub is made of blue plastic, with a full-colour label around its...
I smell chocolate they must be making smarties.
Review of Smarties by
mjbarkley
Advantages: Easy to eat, brightly coloured
Disadvantages: Too much fat and those E numbers
...Many years ago when I was a schoolgirl and Rowntrees was still a company in its own right I lived in York. In the city of York there were certain smells which were strong and one of them was Chocolate. The smell of chocolate came from Rowntrees. I had the opportunity to go and visit Rowntrees factory in York. I can not remember much about the visit but one thing I do remember were the Smarties.
As we went round the factory floor we passed and area where small circles of milk chocolate were moving, and cooling. Our tour guide, though not supposed to, gave us a few discs of chocolate. This was the best chocolate I had ever tasted! The discs were then coated with a sugar shell and these were put into big concrete mixers. As the white Smarties went round in the drum they were coloured by someone putting the dye in on their hand...
Smarties for the children?
Review of Smarties by
mumsymary
Advantages: great for children
Disadvantages: made by nestle
...Smarties
I was looking in the sweet category for inspiration and discovered Smarties. Now I have not eaten a Smartie for many a year. Why? Partly because I am grown up but mostly because they are made by Nestle.
As a child in the 50’s I was given Smarties as a treat. There were not such a wide variety of sweets available then
When they were originally marketed Rowntrees produced them in 1937.They sold in bags for 2d that’s about 1p. In 1988 they were bought out by nestle.
A small smarties tube costs 30p in tesco’s
. It is possible to by other makes of small coloured sweets similar to Smarties. Glisten a firm in Lancashire makes them as do Solerco in Cheshire. Fair trade also makes a chocolate bean not quite the same, as they do not use the bright colours. There are also m&m’s made by master foods...
