Wonderful Sorrento
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
olgaa
Advantages: fantastic scenery and good food
Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything
...Sorrento has it all, the hospitality of Italy combined with a relaxed atmosphere. It is located on the Amalfi coast which is home to some of the most scenic views in all of Italy.
Sorrento is very clean and has a small city that offers great seafood and all Italy's specialty cuisines.
I would definatly reccomend it to everyone who wants to make the trip to Southern Italy, its worth it.
Sorrento is an excellent alternative to staying in Napoli - it isn't plagued by the same poverty and graffiti. The town is beautiful and offers convenient ferries to Capri, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Sorrento is linked to Naples by an inter-city train system that is farily convienient. Early spring is especially perfect here because of all the orange and lemon groves in various backyards and gardens.
Stayed at the "Sorrento Holiday House...

Sorrento my view
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
GS26
Advantages: Lots to see,reasonable prices,
Disadvantages: noisy hotel on main street
...air bar or watch the artist painting at his easel on the pavement.
The Cathedral situated in the older part of town from the outside is unprepossessing and looks a bit bland but a look inside reveals an abundance of decoration with paintings, reliefs and sculptures. There are also churches and shrines all around the city. A steep climb, of steps, just past the Sorrento Palace Hotel has the Stations of the Cross at each turn and a small chapel near the top with chairs and music for a rest.
For a taste of Italy and a different kind of holiday to sea, sunbeds and beaches try Sorrento....

My favourite corner of Italy!
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
klofron
Advantages: Very friendly and great food!
Disadvantages: I don't go often enough!
...in the surrounding hills. Towards the end of August is also worth avoiding as thats when most of Italy shuts down for the summer holidays and it gets very busy. In may and September, the weather has usually been fine. Sunny enough to catch a good tan, but not so hot that you cant get around without feeling very uncomfortable.
THE FOOD
Good found is to be found all over Italy and Sorrento is no exception. The local cuisine is to die for with plenty of choice of venues to suit all budgets. Italy has a reputaion of being expensive, probably a reputaion which has clung to it since people began straying from the Costa's in numbers. Nowadays, Italy is no more expensive than like for like in the UK.
As you would expect, pizzas are fabulous - thin crispy bases cooked in most places in real wood burning pizza ovens on stone slabs. Most things you would wish...

Fantastic holiday destination
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
holty
Advantages: beautiful, romantic
Disadvantages: dishonest tour operators
...Having visited Sorrento on my honeymoon I would highly recommend it. The place itself is very picturesque, with plenty to see and the food is delicious - I returned home a few pounds heavier! There are plenty of cafe's and bars to choose from and contrary to popular belief the cost of eating and drinking in Italy is not that expensive.
There are many organised tours to take advantage of, but I would suggest that you visit the sights by yourself. We unfortunately fell into the trap of booking on to all the organised tours, later discovering that we could've done it ourselves for a quarter of the price. If you do prefer to visit places on organised tours though, please don't listen to the tour operators when they tell you that you should go to the cafe/restaurant that they recommend, telling you that other eating places cannot...

Lido De Jesolo
Review of General: Italy by
bridgendboy
Advantages: Cheap to get to
Disadvantages: No Italian atmosphere
...every bar and restaurant, is decorated in almost a Beer Keller style. Not great if your expecting romantic Italian trattorias.
However, like everywhere else in Italy, it's extreamly cheap to eat, with main courses costing only about £4 for pizza, spagetti etc. It's the drinks that add on the big cost. Expect to pay at least £3 for half a litre of beer.
There is a lot going for this resort if it's what you're looking for. i.e. Cheap to get there (we paid £78 return from Stanstead with GO), great for kids, proximity to Venice (an hour by boat with regular trips run), cheap food etc. but compared to somewhere like Sorrento, it doesn't even come close. If you're looking for Italy go to the Amalfi coast, if you're looking for sun, sea and beer and are fed up with Spain, come here....

Wonderful Sorrento! We'll be back
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
liz2271
Advantages: Beautiful, picturesque, loads to see, hot hot hot
Disadvantages: not enough time to see everything
...and Ravello for a truly relaxed day with breathtaking views.
Limoncello is the local lemon licquor and it packs quite a punch, it is said to aid digestion and many eateries serve you a complimentary slug after your meal. Try the pizza and pasta, believe me its far better than the stuff you'll have in the uk and sample Lacrima christi, a wine from the vesuvio region (does anyone know where I can get any in the UK????)
Italy does have the reputation for being expensive but if you can afford it , its definetly worth it- if you can't save up!! I do!
The only downside is that you can't possibly fit everything in- aside from the aforementioned there is Mount Vesuvius, Naples, Casserta palace, Solfatara volcano, the island of Ischia and on and on......
The weather is very hot during the summer so all you tan junkies will be fine.
There are plenty of bars...

Bella Sorrento
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
atticusuk
Advantages: Beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: Traffic noise
...nationalities were represented but very much in the minority to the coach loads of tourists from the UK and Ireland.
The Geography
The Bay of Sorrento is a lot larger than I had expected. My original preconception was of a small sleepy Italian fishing village that would provide a useful starting point to explore the local areas of interest. A travel book and a few reviews on Ciao later that opinion was quickly changed. Sorrento itself is made up of five communes with Sorrento Town itself providing the main shopping and commercial centre.
The centre of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso which is bisected by the Corso d' Italia which is the main thoroughfare and in the evenings is closed to traffic to allow the locals and visitors alike to parade along in all their finery. Tasso is full of large bars and restaurants with huge patio areas while Corso...

Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
Analytikerin
Advantages: Scenery, cultural.
Disadvantages: Too hot.
...The best holiday I ever had was in Sorrento. It is a truly magical place that I will never forget and I hope to visit it again when I can afford it (it wasn't a cheap holiday). I stayed in a hotel called 'The Sorrento Palace' which was absolutely beautiful. The first time I walked into the hotel my mouth just fell open because I had never stayed anywhere as grand as that. It has a six-tier pool, several restaurants and bars, a gym, and a small shop. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which was nice because it was so hot while I was there. The most memorable parts of my stay here were: The food (four course meal every night); and the piano bar.
Sorrento town is beautiful. The locals are so friendly. There are two harbours which are both worth a visit. One is a little walk away from the town and this is where the locals have their fishing...

Use it as a base .....
Review of Sorrento (Italy) by
Janej47
Advantages: Lots to do if you are prepared to get off your butt ..
Disadvantages: can be expensive
...freebies in a week in Italy than they do at home in a year !
We found a guide ( an unfortunately named Mr Nasti .. a lovely guy ) who added us to another party of four , and for £5 each for the day he took us on our own private tour . I have rarely met a more knowledgable man , and we happily spent a almost five and a half hours exploring the ruins , enjoying his company and absorbing his seemingly endless information
( And watching with amusement as the over-priced Hotel tour virtually ran around in a little over 2 hours behind a man holding a umbrella aloft and ignoring their questions as best he could )
On Thursday we repeated the experience , but this time travelled to Herculaneum ( on Mr Nasti's recommendation ) .. the summer residence and top vacation spot of the Romans , ( and the place where most of them were when the eruption...

Sorrento Pompeii and Amalfi Coast
Review of Shearings Coach Holidays by
alliedprawn
Advantages: ideal for non flyers wishing to travel to the warmer climate of the med.
Disadvantages: NOT A TRIP FOR CHILDREN WHO WILL GET RESTLESS ON A LONG COACH JOURNEY
...ends with a hotel stop along the way.
On the 2007 journey this was Belgium, France, Northern Italy then finally to Sorrento..
Some may argue that spending such a lengthy period of time on a coach is not the way to enjoy a holiday...but the scenery is outstanding. (LETS FACE IT FOLKS...ITS A COACH HOLIDAY!)
I dare you to fall asleep during the trip through Europe!!
Especially through the Alps and Switzerland...BREATHTAKING!
It beats looking at the clouds on a flight!
Each day of the journey to Sorrento is broken by frequent stops along the way and ends with an overnight Hotel Stop at a 2 or 3 star (Best Western TYPE Hotel).
The arrival at these hotels is usually during the late afternoon.
Again...Luggage is delivered to you hotel room by portering staff (NO NEED TO LIFT A FINGER!)
Dinner is served each evening (normally from a menu of 3...
