The stainless Steel Rat - Still Not Rusty.
Review of The Stainless Steel Rat Joins the Circus - Harry Harrison by
Maximus-Qualitus
Advantages: Fast Paced read.
Disadvantages: None.
...The Stainless Steel Rat joins the Circus.
Author - Harry Harrison.
The Hero or Anti Hero of the series of stainless steel rat books is Jim DiGriz.
He was born or rather created in 1961 and has appeared on book shelves ever since.
The richest man in the galaxy, Imperitrix Von Kaiser Czarski, Hires Jim and his wife Angelina to investigate and if possible to catch the criminals behind several bank robberies.
Jim, his wife and their son, James, find a common link to each robbery in that every time a bank has been robbed a Circus has been very near by.
Jim hires a retired magician, 'The Great Grissini' to teach him some tricks and then joins the circus pretending to be a magician!
As is the ilk with the 'rat' stories, there then follows some odd, fast paced and improbable adventures where Jim faces death, is conned, double crossed...

Time Detectives Sapphire and Steel
Review of Sci-Fi - Sapphire and Steel by
peppermint
Advantages: Great deep plots and good acting, weird!
Disadvantages: Do you understand what's going on?
...“All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension”.
So started each episode of Sapphire and Steel, that wonderfully crap ITV sci-fiction attempt from the late 1970s / early 80s. This was ITVs low budget answer to all the Star Trek series that America was churning out to such success at the time.
Well, I used to love Sapphire and Steel, simply because it was so different, so baffling, you felt this must be a programme on another intellectual plane from the one the rest of us are on. And make no mistake it was popular at the time, lasting several series, and even getting a comic strip in Look-In magazine (remember that!?)
Basically, Sapphire (played by Joanna Lumley) and Steel (David McCallum) are time detectives. They are part of the elemental body guards who are ensuring that time travels...

Left Behind - LaHaye & Jenkins
Review of Left Behind - Tim LaHaye, Jerry Jenkins by
Deetzyb
Advantages: Can't put it down - grips you from the start
Disadvantages: none
...Left Behind is actually a series of 12 books entitled the Left Behind Series. The final book was out for sale in May last year with the first book being published in 1995.
The books are fictional series based on certain facts from the bible regarding events of the 'end times'. Anyone beleiving in Christ and the truth of the Bible beleives that one day they will leave this earth and join him in heaven 'in a twinkling of an eye' (from the Bible) leaving behind 'non believers'.
Left Behind is the title of the first book and starts from the disappearance of all 'believers'. It concentrates on four main characters who are Rayford and Chloe Steele (father and daughter), Cameron Williams or Buck and Pastor Bruce. The book follows their lives as their paths cross and their search for answers and discovery of the truth.
Rayford Steele...

Be a Brigadier
Review of Steel Panthers 3 (PC) by
Venituri
Advantages: thoroughly researched
Disadvantages: Games can take ages
...Steel Panthers 3 is the latest strategy game in the Steel Panthers series. This time you get a whole brigade to play with. The game covers combined operations from 1939 to 1999 with many diferent nations available. Initially the whole thing looks so confusing, but after a while it becomes very simple as each unit has only a limited number of things it can do in any situation. A nice 'button' interface provides a clear guide to action. Of particular interest is its encyclopedia which provis details of each weapons system in the game in terms of its effectiveness. A wide range of one off scenarios and complete campaigns is provided, but I often find it far more interesting playing customised 'what if' battles or minor historical encounters. It has a multiplayer modem option (which I have not tried. This is an excellent product...

A stitch in time
Review of Sci-Fi - Sapphire and Steel by
Mauri
Advantages: Innovative approach
Disadvantages: Short run
...This was a strange one!
‘Sapphire and Steel’ was a relatively short- lived Sci-Fi show that took a different approach to the genre.
CAST
Joanna Lumley.... Sapphire
David McCallum....Steel
David Collins…Silver
Steven O'Shea...Rob
Patricia Shakesby ....Anne Shaw
David Suchet ....Voiceover in titles
Directed by David Foster, Shaun O'Riordan
"All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension...Sapphire and Steel have been assigned"
Only six stories were made of this strange, and weirdly atmospheric show. Its run started in 1979 and ended in 1982 a new series never was made. It starred Joanna Lumley who had just achieved huge success as Purdy in the New Avengers and David McCallum who was well known as one of the ‘Men from UNCLE...

Opinion Of The Shure SM 58 Microphone
Review of Shure SM 58 LC by
rocking
Advantages: Excellent Quality
Disadvantages: Heavy so don't try throwing it into the audience
...The Shure SM58 is one of the best made close vocal microphones in existence. It is quite heavy but very durable with a tungsten steel shaft coated in plastic to give it good grip.
The Shure series of microphones have been going for years and are well know for their reliability. All the super groups have used them at some point. I still see people using cheap plastic rubbish. The Shure is a dynamic omnidirectional microphone which only picks up your voice and not any background noise. It is well shielded so that it is a good choice for close vocals.
All in all a great piece of equipment....

Remington R5 Diamond.
Review of Remington R 530 R5 Diamond by
mattyboy4
Advantages: Very easy with many functions.
Disadvantages: None
.... The cheapest price (£39.99) is very reasonable for what is actually included in the razor, as it glides comfortably across the skin with no irritation, and this is what most men look for in a razor. The product is available quite easily from amazon, but is also sold in other shops like john lewis. There are 7 basic rotart shavers available from remington, from the steel series, to the titanium series, then to the diamond series, the R7 diamond series being the most advanced and therefore expensive, and the R1 steel series being the cheapest but therefore also havin the the least to offer. Information of all of these products are available on the remington-europe home page.
Hope this has helped....

THE RING.
Review of The Ring - Danielle Steel by
thingywhatsit
Advantages: A read when you want something easy to digest.
Disadvantages: Flawed by Perfectionism.
...these kind of books for long journeys because I am a quick reader, and like to read the whole book in one sitting. I actually found myself looking forward to what was about to happen, and a lot of modern authors do not give me that sense of anticipation at all.
CHARACTERS
Her characters are believeable, though not in our lives. They are conjured up perfection, and life in reality is not perfect. I find that although I do believe the stories, her characters are too perfect for reality, although having said that, when I am reading fiction, I expect it to be just that - fiction.
COMPARISON WITH OTHER AUTHORS
I believe that Danielle Steele's name has been brought to the forefront because many of her books, including this one, have been well publicised and have also been made into mini series. Her name stands out, whereas other modern authors do...

There is a Rat in the Galaxy
Review of The Stainless Steel Rat - Harry Harrison by
Coloneljohn
Advantages: A funny story
Disadvantages: old by todays standards
...This is the story of Slippery Jim diGriz, The Stainless Steel Rat. Jim is a crook because he wants to be. He is a good crook. He can con humans, aliens and any number of robots time after time.
The local police have not been able to catch him, so call in the Special Corps. These are the Galactic Super Cops.
What do they do with Jim once they do catch him? Make him a Cop!
And thus begins the saga of Jim on the side of Law and Order, Well not exactly. He may be reformed but not that much.
The story of the Stainless Steel Rat is an entertaining romp through a future galaxy, where as Jim himself says; The citizens exist in a fat, rich union of worlds that has almost forgotten the meaning of the word crime. There are a few malcontents and socially maladjusted despite the centuries of genetic screening, they are quickly caught...
