Reviews of timex expedition
Stands the test of time
Review of Timex Carabena Watch by
headgardener
Advantages: Waterproof, shockproof trendy useful, shall I go on!!!!!
Disadvantages: None
...Manufactured by Timex, under the name of TMX this watch is encapsulated within a sturdy resin carabena.
Allowing you to really take this timepiece absolutely anywhere.
Shock and water resistant this watch has nifty little extra functions including an alarm, stopwatch, indiglo backlight, screensaver and mystery answer.
Costs around £30 from good jewellers or £25 in Argos.
I didn’t pay for mine; it was a prize from the cokeauction.
As someone who isn’t particularly gentle with any piece of jewellery, this watch looked just the job.
It cost me 8600 credits, which in real terms is 86 red coke ring pulls, and was well worth the effort.
This design enables the carabena clasp to be fixed onto just about anything, from school bags to belt hooks and even onto wetsuits, if that is your thing.
As someone who finds that regular...

BSES Expeditions
Review of BSES Expeditions by
rachel_holley
Advantages: Great destinations, experience of a lifetime, registered charity so not profiting from you, just go for it!
Disadvantages: Ummm.... cost might put people off, although it's pretty standard for this kind of thing it does seem a lot of money at first. You can raise it though!
...I didn't actually go on a gap year expedition, although I have heard they are good. I went on one of their 6 week summer expeditions, to the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrghyzstan, in summer 99.
The expedition was fairly typical of the summer ones, with a little over a week spent on a science project, some time doing glacier training, ice climbing etc. and then a two week trek phase. The different types of science work varies with the particular expedition, but often includes ecology-related projects, surveying, geology, glaciology etc. I did a geology project and really enjoyed it. Overall however I think the quality of the science done varies quite a bit, beware if that is your main reason for going, the expeditions are primarily set up for the adventure type stuff.
The expeditions usually cost around £2700, although it varies from year...

Therm-a-Rest Explorer Mat
Review of Therm-a-Rest Explorer Full Length Mat by
KnowledgeBase
Advantages: Reasonable Price
Disadvantages: Rather large if backpacking
...Last summer I embarked on a 100 mile highland hike, carrying my equipment in a 75ltre capacity rucksack. We aimed to complete the expedition in 5 days. I felt that my current carry-mat was unsuitable as it was farily large and made from foam. I was recommended a thermarest by my friends, and tried theres before purchasing my own.
I was impressed by the thermarest brand. They make really good quality equipment. I was faced with the choice of whether to go for the "ProLite" mattress from the "fast and light series" or the "Expedition" from "the trek and travel" series. I decided, that as I was on a student budet to go for the "Expedition".
I bought the full length version as I am around 6ft. Perhaps going for regular would have been more advantageuous but if you really want to save on weight and size- chose "Prolite...

A useful watch
Review of TAG Heuer F1 Series by
alano
Advantages: Handsome design, rugged, compact, many useful features
Disadvantages: A little difficult to set the alarm, for other features you sometimes have to use the manual
...I purchased a TAG Heuer Kirium Forumula 1 watch about six months ago, and it has been a rugged, good-looking companion.
After wearing a digital quartz $39 Timex Ironman for five years, I got used to having an alarm, which I consider indispensible. So after researching sport/dress watches that I could wear in meetings, etc., I decided to go for the F1 with a steel band. Being in my early fifties, I felt (and my wife concurred) that I deserved a good watch.
Yes, it is expensive; I paid about $2,000 for it in San Francisco at a watch store that handled several of the watches I was interested in, so I could compare them on my wrist. I realize I could have saved $500 or more by purchasing online, but I appreciate that retailers have to pay rent and staff time, and have inventory to show customers who really need to see and try...

The tent for the small
Review of Eurohike 220 by
Kuli2
Advantages: The price
Disadvantages: The size
...I first purchased the Eurohike 220 about 2 years ago when I was going on a Duke Of Edinburugh expedition, the tent was light weight and it was very easy to carry on the expedition. Another reason I bought the tent was because it was so easy to erect. The poles easily located in the channels and it just popped up. The simple job of hammering in the pegs followed and then you could use it to your hearts content. This is the type of tent you need after you have been on a 15 mile hike, something that is easy to put up with no fiddeling.
The only problem with the tent is that it is too small it is about 5"8 long and now iam 6". This tent was a great tent and it served me well for the 2 years that it was in my possesion. The only problem now is finding a tent that will match it in price and in all of the other essential criteria...

The sparrow has landed...
Review of Children of God - Mary Doria Russell by
frkurt
Advantages: Continuation of great plot and characters
Disadvantages: -
...The book ‘Children of God is the sequel to Mary Doria Russell's award winning first novel, ‘The Sparrow’. In this we take up once again with Father Emilio Sandoz, the only survivor of a doomed expedition to a nearby planet, set in the not-to-distant future. In that first novel, a team of Jesuits and others set sail to the nearby star system of Alpha Centauri to discover the source of unexplained radio transmissions which sounded quite a lot like a new kind of music. The star-crossed trip ended disastrously for the expedition team, and the only survivor of that group was Sandoz, brought back to earth.
Most of the characters from the first novel have died (in this novel we discover how a few of the missing people from the first expedition met their fates), and due to the effects of near-light-speed travel, many decades have passed...

Absolutely brilliant and hugely insightful
Review of Into Thin Air - John Krakauer by
ildamiano
Advantages: Really vivid, really exciting, really gripping
Disadvantages: rambles at the end
...Really surprised that no-one has reviewed this cracking book yet. "Into Thin Air" is the true story of an expedition to climb Mount Everest that left six people dead. Jon Krakauer is a journalist who enjoyed mountain-climbing as a hobby, who got the chance to go on an Everest climb, led by experts, but containing a bunch of relative novices.
The book gives a fantastic insight into the whole experience - trekking to Base Camp at 17,000 feet is a feat of endurance in itself. Krakauer brilliantly conveys how thin the air is, how difficult the climb, how amazing the scenery is and how surreal the experience is.
One word of advice - there's no real need to read the last 50 pages, as Krakauer begins to ramble. You'll know when to stop (if you want to) as it's the point where the expedition is over.

Just Sink IT
Review of Titanic DVD by
Gemgemmings
Advantages: good special effects
Disadvantages: long film
...The film is more about a fictional romance on the Titanic and in the three hours manages to encoporate the fact that the ship does sink. When an undersea expedition finds a mysterious nude drawing aboard the wreckage of the Titanic, that of Rose DeWitt Bukater, at the time seventeen and travelling aboard the "unsinkable" ship with her fiance. Rose falls in love with Jack Dawson, an artist and third-class passenger who ignites the fires of passion inside her, the ship's crew tempts them to test the cross-Atlantic speed record and smack into an iceberg.
A true blockbuster, with a lot of heart and soul. Academy Award Nominations: 14...
