Review of Smith Kendon Mixed Fruit Flavour Travel Sweets by  mumsymary

Advantages: last ages
Disadvantages: sweet

...I have a golden tin on the mantle piece it used to contain Smith Kendons mixed fruit travel sweets. I have eaten a few of these tins over my lifetime. My dad used to buy them and occasionally we buy them too. Smith Kendon has been making sweets since 1780. Smith Kendon sweets started in America .I believe they sold out at some stage to Kraft and more recently in 2005 I believe Kraft sold them to Wriggleys Not only do Smith Kendon make mixed fruit travel sweets they also make acid Lemon, blackcurrant, and mocha coffee travel sweets. These sweets come in a 200g tin they are very attractive and the tin possibly a collector's item. Now to get on to the sweets. I have seen these sweets available in some newsagents /general stores. At some supermarkets and at fuel station shops and motorway services. The price is about £1.30-£150p... Read review

Not so Strange
Review of Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein by  stevecook

Advantages: True fiction
Disadvantages: Did create a cult based on the one in the book in real life.

...to be a human and also to protect him from the government. In an attempt by the government to recapture Smith he shows startling abilities - how to exist without air for hours, and how to teleport object with the power of his mind. The story continues to follow Smith and his friends as they travel the world and eventually set up a religion. As this happens there is Heinleins usual smattering of sex with various willing women. They always seem to be Nymphomaniacs in his books. At the end of the book Smith realises that he has fulfilled his destiny and wills his own death. There are several strange and challenging ideas put forward by this book. It is compelling and provokes a lot of thought. Worth reading.... Read review

Heaven comes in pints
Review of John Smith's Bitter by  bonjo

Advantages: Taste
Disadvantages: No disadvantages

...OK I couldn't wait, I have been thinking about what topic I could write about for my next op, food, travel, sport...I considered the lot, but as a drinker I thought to write about a more tasty Op, and then it cam to me...my favourite brew John Smiths , the can that always feels cool even in a heatwave.. I cast my mind back to those exotic holidays I've taken these past few years and the one thing that was missing was my beloved can of smoothflow, yes I know it doesn't look too cool in the Bahamas, or in Florida ( where you can buy some John Smith brands), however..... .....I drift off into my dream world, I am in my hammock on a dusky Bahamian island golden beach , blue sea, blue sky, sun at its highest and there on the table next to me, my can of John Smiths with the condensation slowly trickling down the side of the glass...I lean... DANCING BAREFOOT
Review of Smith, Patti by  Mauri

Advantages: Influential, innovative
Disadvantages: none

...dropping out of college and a spell travelling in Europe she headed for New York in 1971 where she became involved in the burgeoning alternative art scene. She began to make a name for herself in underground theatre collaborating on a play with Sam Shepard with whom she later co-authored the play 'Cowboy Mouth'. She soon started writing and performing poetry beginning collaboration with a rock guitarist Lenny Kaye that she had recently met through their shared interests in obscure records. Although neither of them knew it at the time this was to be the beginning of the Patti Smith Group. Over the next couple of years Patti Smith continued to perform as a poet opening shows for the 'New York Dolls' as well as writing songs for 'The Blue Oyster Cult' and serving as a part-time music journalist/critic on a variety of music publications. In 1974... Read review

Free white top with every pint....
Review of John Smith's Extra Smooth Bitter by  robscott

Advantages: Great smooth creamy pint which tastes cracking
Disadvantages: If not treated right by barman can taste nasty

...drunk. In the latter espect, John Smiths definitely works!! However, if you just want to get steaming drunk then i suggest tennant super strong lager (nasty stuff that tramps drink) If on the other hand, you appreciate a good smooth pint of bitter with a crisp clean taste that leaves no nasty aftertaste and seems to travel quite well then take the rough with the smooth!! And you get a free white top (except in Rosies bar, Richmond where a head is an unlikely occurance unless they forgot to water down that particular brew)... Read review

These are some of my favourite things
Review of WHSmith High Street (Shop) by  northern_lights

Advantages: All your book, audio and stationery needs in one store
Disadvantages: Not enough stores exist

...into the box provided and walk out with your newspaper under your arm. This is a terrific idea and shows that Smith's has faith in its customers. Newspapers are normally located at the front of the store for easy access and in the Holborn branch they are located near the doors of the Holborn Circus end. Books Smith's has a huge book selection. The Holborn Circus branch dedicates around a quarter of the store to books. There is a wide range of fiction books split into categories such as Crime / Science Fiction / Thrillers / Romance, etc. All types of Non-Fiction are covered too - from travel books to home to cookery, and even a local history section. Generally, there is also a section for new books and also books which are currently on special offer. The Holborn Circus branch has these sections near the Holborn Circus end doors. There is also... Dogmatic Injustice
Review of Dogma DVD by  NilesD

Advantages: A refreshing spin on catholicism
Disadvantages: There are none; seriously.

...Well. What can I say about this fantastic film. Seriously, it is a one-of-a-kind. Director, Kevin Smith really stuck his neck on the line when he decided to produce this film, but let's thank the lord that he did. Dogma sees a young girl fight against two disgruntled Angels ( Affleck and Damon who play Bartleby and Loki ) as they attempt to exploit a loophole in the church system. This loophole would allow Bartleby and Loki to re-enter heaven even though cast out by God by travelling through the entrance to a church and having all their sins removed. If they do enter heaven, then God's word has been foiled, thus unmaking the entire universe. Kevin Smith is my favourite director of all time. If not for all his fantastic movie concepts, then for the fact that he uses mainly the same cast for each movie. Jason Mewes ( Who plays Jay... Read review

Automobile Allegory
Review of The Dead Zone - Stephen King by  rose_of_sharon

Advantages: King before he ran out of gas.
Disadvantages: You may feel sorry for the hero.

...Whatever his shortcomings -- and he has some big ones -- Stephen King can tell a good story, and this is one of the best of them. But I think he has ambitions to be taken seriously by the EngLit crowd too, and there are themes in all of his books. The Dead Zone may represent the first appearance of a theme he more famously explores in Christine: the American cult of the automobile. The book's hero, John Smith, acquires a psychic talent in childhood when he injures his head skating on "cleared ice" at one corner of which "two rubber tires burned sootily". However, the talent lies dormant until Smith visits a fairground with his girlfriend and plays the "Wheel of Fortune" after which this part of the book is named. He has a flashback to the smell of burning rubber as he wins several hundred dollars. The same evening, travelling home from... Read review

Not for the serious book lover
Review of WHSmith High Street (Shop) by  Saltire

Advantages: Location, wide price range
Disadvantages: Limited range of adult non-fiction

...three for two offer can lure even the hardiest of book lovers!), and my local WH Smiths has a large travel and gardening section. The children's books are also well-presented with a good range or titles and pricing. When faced with a trashy novel, I prefer a magazine. However, if it's 'cheap and nasy' reading you're after, with a bottle of juice and a cd to take home with you, you can't do much better than this!!!... Read review

Wild, more like lame.
Review of Wild Wild West DVD by  mookielidl

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text

...Wild Wild West" is an all-around exaggerated look at early Western civilisation. Oh thought I should add a bit of plot here,The lead character is Jim West (played by Will Smith). His partner is played by Kevin Kline. They are entrusted by the US president to protect the free world. They travel on this cool train. Kenneth Branagh, plays the baddie Dr loveless or something. Anyway, It is undoubtedly one of the year's worst films. One of the factors that makes the movie so frustrating to watch is the fact that it is based on one of the most inventive and original shows I have had the pleasure of seeing. Inventiveness and originality are lacking in this mess of a movie where the script is horrible, the one-liners stale and the performances wooden(except Kenneth Branagh, whom you feel sorry for trying so hard to be evil). Will Smith... Read review
