Science fiction heaven
Review of Star Trek Fact Files by  Excelle

Advantages: Detailed and interesting
Disadvantages: Not cheap (£1.99 weekly)

...I’m fed up with being branded a geek, just for liking a certain kind of show on TV. It’s OK to watch soaps every day of the week, but is watching Star Trek once or twice a week such a crime? D’oh, how annoying can you get? Well, it’s something I’m going to have to live with, but luckily there’s plenty to fuel my habit. This weekly collectable series gives you all the information about Star Trek you could possibly wish for. Each week you receive approximately 15 pages of information, including technical diagrams and specifications, profiles of planets and people, episode guides and articles on ST-related subjects. You certainly get your money’s worth, as you’ll be reading this for a good while. You can expect all your expectations to be fulfilled, and if you’re interested in the science of Star Trek then you’ll be in luck... Read review

But it will be the end
Review of BBC2 - Star Trek: Voyager by  Terrie

Advantages: Janeway is a good, strong character and the crew is diverse and nothing gets boring
Disadvantages: This might be the last season

...with it’s characters, including a shape shifting head of security (Odo) and a ferengi barkeep who was a bit shady and then some. The whole war with the Dominion, the group of shape-shifters that Odo was somehow related, added its fuel to the fire. Again ended too soon. But first another hand off. Deep Space Nine was the place that launched Voyager in the first episode of Star Trek: Voyager. Personally, this one is my all time favorite Star Trek show. Voyager gets sucked into an uncharted part of the galaxy by an entity called The Caretaker. The Caretaker’s array throws Voyager about 75 light years from home. But they accomplish one thing that they were supposed to: they found the Maquis ship and its crew like Voyager was setting out to do. The Maquis crew gets incorporated into Voyager’s crew. It makes for an interesting... Read review

A trek to the top
Review of Venezuelan Andes by  alimason

Advantages: birlliant views, varied climate, challenging
Disadvantages: cold, hot, remote, altitude

...I travelled to the Andes in the summer of 2005 and it was one of the most exhilirating experiences of my life. I started by journey from the large town of Merida. I found this to be the perfect starting point as there is everything you could possibly want: many english speaking guides who are more than qualified and registered with reliable companies. The town itself is also quite nice with its meandering streets and bustling markets. However trekkers should be advised that it is very very hard to find any fuel for your stoves. After a short stay in Merida to stock up on the esentials we set off to the mountains. The trek itself lasted 5 days and was very strenuous in places. In particular the first day or so where tempertaures were in the 30s and the path was very steep. However after a day or so you reach a 'valley' in th mountains... Read review

Up Up and Away, With this great XGK!!
Review of MSR XGK EX Stove by  trevordgamble

Advantages: Will burn well just about any fuel you can find to use, good at altitude.
Disadvantages: Not as good looking a stove as others in the series! Keep a spares kit.

...If you really do want the latest, most fancy, up to the minute backpacking stove then look at the rest of this great manufacturers range!!! There will most certainly be an MSR stove there just for someone just like you! If however, just like little old me, you really want a go anywhere and do just about anything stove, to backpack all around this world with, then PLEASE do look no further. Your journey for finding a perfect backpackers stove is over, and you have arrived at your requested detination, right on time!!! I own two of these excellent stoves, both bought from Field and Trek, if I recall correctly. I got my first of these when Chris Townsend reccomended them in Trail magazine, or was it TGO??? Being a bit of a CT fan I wanted the same stove that the old master backpacker had!! I was later often glad that I did have... Read review

Trev Tries Trek
Review of Trek 1.2 Double by  trevorbrock

Advantages: Good re-introduction to road bikes
Disadvantages: expense and pedals

...Petrol bills are falling rapidly in East Belfast. My latest acquisition might turn the whole fuel crisis around in a week or two. If you have shares in the oil industry, now is the time to offload them. And if you are a tanker driver, just be thankful there is still some demand left for your services - that might not long be the case. I've bought a bike ! It is possible, of course, that the big fall will be me, not the fuel cost - balance is not my main gift!. It is possible that that fuel demand will increase as ambulances race across the Belfast skyline to pick up the bits and pieces that are left of me, once I hit the roads. And it is possible that tanker drivers will all resign the moment they catch sight of my lycra clad rear end on their horizon. So what is going on here!? 1 The Big idea. Once my cycling mad daughter finished... Read review

Trangia, indestructable stove
Review of Trangia stoves by  mike_ciao

Advantages: Light, unbreakable
Disadvantages: Slower to boil, lack of fine flame control

...that you use a proper fuel can. I once took the plastic bottle from a Chemist out on a trek and the bottle cracked. My sleeping bag soaked up a cup of meths, the sickly sweet smell lasted all night and we all woke up with a hangover (but still with our vision)... Read review

Excellent!
Review of Star Trek - First Contact DVD by  CliveS

Advantages: Easy to follow for Trek fans and non-Trek fans
Disadvantages: None

...Star Trek:First Contact is one of the "even" Trek films, that is the eighth trek fil from Paramount. As with all "even" Trek films First Contact grips the viewer from beginning to end, giving the seasoned Trek fan limitless action and story line as well as letting anyone with little knowledge of the Trek universe follow the heros without needing to see any episode from the last thirty years! Jonathan Frakes directing takes the story from one plot to the next leaving time for memorable comic moments such as Deanna Troi, attempting to gain information from resisdent Earth genius Zefran Cochrane - watch and find out!... The Original Series
Review of BBC2 - Star Trek by  adamdavid

Advantages: Ground-breaking in it's day
Disadvantages: Looks really dated

...The original Star Trek was, and is, a classic piece of television. When it was first aired Star Trek was groundbreaking. Never before had there been a crew like the crew of the Enterprise. There was Spock (an alien) and Uhura (a black, female officer). What made Star Trek great was the fact that it tackled all sorts of issues in a way that was neither patronising nor condescending. All episodes showed a degree of humour. Today, the original series looks slightly ridiculous. The sets are laughable as are the effects, but that's not the point. By today's standards, Star Trek may be awful, but it shouldn't be measured by today's standards. This was the series that launched one of the most successful sci-fi adventures of all time. The multi-racial nature of Star Trek showed how the world should be, with people living and working together... Read review

Too much quanity - not enough quality
Review of BBC2 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine by  fiisch

Advantages: Good actors, some fantastic episodes
Disadvantages: most episodes are eventless

...Not being an anorak Sci-Fi viewer, I feel I have an unbiased opinion. The first generation of Star Trek was good, with most of the episodes, except a few poor attempts, we exciting. The next generation star trek, deep space nine, Voyager and other modern sci-fi's lack the exciting days of the first generation Star Trek. Cardasion Peace treaty's and politics ruin the new Star Trek, with many episodes based upon Captain Pickard and the Peace Treaty or Star Trek exploring more territory and finding a peaceful, boring race. Sorry, but the producers must try harder as the storyline is abysmal. Gene Roddenberry has really lost her touch. However, some new episodes can be fantastic but sadly, those episodes are in a big minority.... Read review

Excellent
Review of BBC2 - Star Trek by  Omega

Advantages: Opens your mind up
Disadvantages: Your indoors

...For any of you out there that like sci-fi this is a program that you should watch. There are a few different star trek programs on the tv now days. These include Star Trek Generations Star Trek Deep Space 9 and Star Trek Voyager. All of these are very good. If you have never seen them before you must watch them. I think that out of all three of them Star Trek Voyager is the best. I say this because it is different from the others. The ship voyager is alone far from home and they are trying to make it back but it will take over 60 years to get home. It has a good plot and is worth watching.... Read review
