No bovver wiv an hover
Review of Flymo Microlite Hover Mower by  GraingerN

Advantages: light weight for ease of mowing, easy to clean
Disadvantages: none

...Although when I moved to my present house a simple lawn mower wouldn’t suffice (more like a couple of cows, looking at the state of it) my family and I soon knocked it into shape as we decided the only thing to do was to completely dig the entire garden over, level it out and lay new turf. So after several months of hard labour, broken nails and empty purses and wallets all-round my garden looked a pure delight and my new turf was ready for nurturing. As turf these days is heavily soaked in manure and all the rest of it, it wasn’t long at all before it started sprouting shoots here there and everywhere. I knew that it couldn’t be mowed for a while and it had to be drenched in water every day and it wasn’t ready for walking on just yet either, so I thought perhaps this was the best time to get one of those... Anything and everything
Review of Richard Dunns Leisure Centre (Bradford) by  Kuli2

Advantages: The swimming
Disadvantages: Too many visitors

...Richard Dunns Leisure Centre named after the famous boxer from Bradford, Richard Dunn. The sports centre has a large swimming pool with slides and other water features. There are also a number of sports halls with wooden floors for badminton and indoor football. A number of other rooms are used for playing table tennis and doing weight training and aerobics. The weight training rooms have a large amount of equipment for cardivascular work, fitness, stamina and strenght workouts and traning. Out side a large gravel area is used for football and cycling but Bradford Hockey Club are pushing for this area and a large grass area to be turned into two Astro turf pitches so that Bradford and Richard Dunns Leisure Centre can become the north east England hockey coaching academy but the council are been very stubborn and wont let... Agonising to watch
Review of Tim Henman (GBR) by  JSPorter

Advantages: He's BRITISH. excellent half volleys
Disadvantages: puts us through agony. mediocre groundstrokes

...Tim henman is the player all Bitish fans love. Born in oxfordshire henman is one of the only success stories to come out of England in recent times. So far Tim had never won a Grand slam. His best attempts have come on his home turf at Wimbledon where he has reached the last four on three occasions. In the other grand slam events Henman's best performances are the 4th round in the U.S open, the 4th round in the Australian open and the third round at the french open. Sadly this is quite disaponting for britains best player in recent history, and world top 10 ranked player. henmans best stroke is his volleys and half volleys. He is probably the best half vollier in the game. However his ground strokes are the shots that let him down. This is the main reason why he does so well on grass (because good volleys are needed on grass... Read review

Great for skint teams, brain damage for players
Review of Mitre Tactic Ball by  youngmj

Advantages: Cheap....thats about it
Disadvantages: Mishapen easily, nothing outstanding about it, too hard (no cushion)

...I have used a Mitre Tactic on many occasions now on all the surfaces (blaise, astro turf and grass) and I have always been underwhelmed by its performance. My old school got them in at dirt cheap prices (about £1.73 per ball when averaged out) and used them on our blaise pitches. This really was a nightmare as getting smacked on the thigh with one of these balls on a chilly december morning is never going to be an enjoyable experience. It would also explain why the Higher results are going down the pan as kids lose millions more brain cells every time they header one of these rocks. It also won't fly very far and if the wind takes hold of it, it could go anywhere. With this said, it is quite a solid ball if just being used for perhaps passing drills or warm ups. It is by no stretch of the imagination anywhere near the standard... Read review

Mitre Ultimatch
Review of Mitre Ultimatch Ball by  andy2512

Advantages: Quality, feel
Disadvantages: price

...I recently recieved this ball for my birthday about a year ago and I must say it is pretty much as good now as it was when I first got it. I mean I knew mitre made some quality balls but I had never really owned a quality one like this. I have used this ball on pretty much all surfaces - from astro turf to indoor to normal grass and it seems to fair just as well in all of them. The outer part of the ball is extremely tough and a few misplaced shots into nearby bushes seem to have had no effect. I have even picked thorns out of it but the tough exterior has prevented these having any effect on the ball. It is also pretty low maintenance in terms of how often you actually have to pump it up anyway. The ball is a fairly top of the market one, costing around £40 in most shops now. This is because of the top quality though... Read review

Make your own compost.
Review of Member Advice on Compost by  Beany

Advantages: Helping local authority with recycling.
Disadvantages: Smelly.

.... Sawdust and pet straw. Items that should not go into the brown wheelie bin. Meat, fish or bones. Soil ,turf, sand, rocks or building rubble. Dog faeces or cat litter. Plastics. Fats and oils. Contents of vacuum cleaners. Disposable nappies and dressings. Cardboard. Newspapers/magazines. Metals. Glass. Textiles. Ashes. Batteries. Cosmetics, pharmaceuticals & dyestuffs. Sand based animal bedding. What I have done is collect all the grass cuttings etc. in the bin and allow it to rot down which only takes six weeks. The compost is then emptied out and used on the garden as compost. With a little ingenuity a suitable plastic bin the size of a wheelie bin or larger could be used in your garden. If you do not have enough appropriate materials to make the compost you could approach your neighbours and use theirs. Ideally the plastic bin should... Read review

What things I wonder
Review of What 10 items would you put in a time capsule? by  jeannie

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...them see the prices we paid for food and clothes. Wonder if clothes then were cheaper or did you just press a button and new clothes, just like that. No nead for wardrobes, sounds good. 5. Cds and DVDs. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ I wonder what they would think of our music or the films. Would they watch films do you think, or listen to music like we do. In the future Would they nead a tv. It makes you think. 6. A piece of turf. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ You don't know if they would still have grass, fields or flowers. That would be something I would miss, the smell of the flowers and the blossom on the trees. 7. Piano. @@@@@@@@@@@@ I started to play when I was young, going to lessons, I really loved it. Would they have such a thing in the future or drums maybe. It really makes you think. 8. Wheely Bin. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ I wonder what... Read review

Where Bill Clinton did not inhale...
Review of Turf Tavern (Oxford) by  Duncan1

Advantages: Friendly atmosphere
Disadvantages: Slightly dinghy

...The Turf Tavern is a delightful pub in the in the centre of Oxford. It here that Bill famously did not inhale. Location The pub is located down an alleyway, which joins Holywell Street and New College Lane. 18th century cottages and the Old City Wall, 13th century, surround it. On the other side of the city wall is New College and across Holywell Street is Wadham College. It is ideally situated for anyone who has just visited the colleges in the centre and landmarks such as the Radcliffe Camera. Surroundings The layout of the Turf is rather archaic and I think this adds to its character. The ceilings inside are quite low. There are two medium size rooms inside. Outside they have two beer patios with about 6 trestle tables each. In the winter there are heaters outside so it is possible to remain outside when the pub is busy... Read review

Wildflower meadows
Review of Member Advice on Gardening by  Mina

Advantages: Not having to worry about mowing the lawn every week.
Disadvantages: Not good for hay fever sufferers.

...Turn your garden lawn into a wildflower Meadow. The easiest way to create a meadow is to stop mowing part of the lawn and to stop using weedkillers and fertilisers. Many lawns have low growing wild flowers among them naturally, leaving the mower blade on the highest setting and mowing once a fortnight or less, or simply not mowing at all will allow them to flourish. Keeping the meadow away from borders will prevent weeds from spreading. Pot grown plants can be added, but the meadow will gradually improve with time. Flowers It can take a few years to establish a wildflower meadow, as the soil needs to be dealt with in a particular way. The less fertile the soil, the more chance the flowers will have, otherwise the grass will succeed at their expense. Nitrogen hungry plants that grow quickly can be planted for a year to strip the nutrients... Read review
