Language and Gender in Conversation
Review of Everything that starts with L ... by
Skrzypczak
Advantages: Men aren't always dominant over women
Disadvantages: Unfortunately as this research shows they are in our society
...with men’s.’ To what extent do you agree with this last proposition? You should refer to at least two theories of language when responding to this question.
Sociolinguistic research has found that in some societies Men interrupt women in conversation more than they do with other men. Also, that men reject topics raised by women however they are more willing to talk about topics raised by other men (Thorne). This reveals that men feel more dominant in conversation and try to take away the dominance of women. By interrupting and dismissing conversation started by women, men feel that they are in control of the conversation and therefore more dominant over women. Sarah Thorne also found that women use supportive minimal localisations like “mmm” or “yeah” while talking to men, which shows that they listen...

THANK ...AHEM...GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY!!!
Review of Women on Top - Nancy Friday by
phoenixgreen
Advantages: INSIGHTFUL, INTELLIGENT, HIGHLY CHARGED, VERY POWERFUL.
Disadvantages: None, but you might want to retire to a room of your own before delving into this book..!
...up into two sections, the first containing a number of chapters written by Nancy Friday - short essays really on things like separating love and sex, and "the nice girl rules" which is particularly interesting. The second main part of the book covers the fantasies which women have written in with, and there are three chapters here - the first deals with seductive, sadistic or sexually controlling women, the second, with women/women fantasies, and the third with women who feel themselves to be insatiable - one woman, many fantasies, and group sex. It's often very arousing to read other people's fantasies, and this book is no different in that respect. I'm sure many people who have bought it, (me included) did so for the thrill factor - but there is more to it that this - there is a courage and a freedom to this piece of collective writing...

Tenko - Complete boxed set all 3 series
Review of Tenko - Complete (Box Set) by
mjc121
Advantages: excellent drama very well acted
Disadvantages: no special features
...This is one of the best dramas of the 1980s. The box set has all 3 series and the bonus 'reunion' episode. The series concentrates on the women's POW camp. The three series are based on real life experiences. Despite this being an excellent drama it is not the type of thing you can say 'I enjoyed watching that' Despite it having a 12 certificate I personally wouldn't recommend it as suitable for anyone under 15.
During the three series we see the women suffer at the hands of the Japanese guards. Food rations being cut, low medical supplies and death could only be around the corner for one or even all of the women.
The cast are fantastic. Stephanie Cole (better known as Diana Trent in Waiting for God) as Doctor Beatrice and Burt Kwouk as the sinister Captain Yamauchi to name but two.
My favorite character is probably Sister Ulrica...

Maxim's good
Review of Maxim by
migetboy99
Advantages: Awesome!
Disadvantages: None
...Maxim magazine is one of the best that I've ever read. It is packed with info about women, sex, gadgets, and sports. Each magazine has several photo shoots of beautiful women, and wonderful advice on how to have one of your own. Though it is not a pornographic magazine, you can certainly get your kicks from it. Most of the photos are half-nude, and of amazingly beautiful women. I would definetly recommend this magazine to any man, or woman. Though I do not subscribe to it, I buy it almost monthly. It is my favorite magazine on the stands right now. If you are a man and you haven't read this magazine yet, you definetly need to give it a try. Both the British and American versions are great, giving you two times a month to read this magazine....

the Representation of Women
Review of Everything that starts with W ... by
pumpkin_pie2002
Advantages: Women rock....
Disadvantages: ...Men don't think so!
...Another essay i have written:
How Are Women Represented In Two Different Print Based Media?
I am going to explore two separate articles from very different sources. I am looking at an article from the Style section of The Times entitled ‘The Truth About Being Single’ along with a page from the magazine FHM called ‘The Ultimate Female’.
Each article is very different. The main reason for their differences are the audience that they are aimed at. The article from Style is aimed at women, especially older, single women whereas the article from FHM is aimed towards men. The different audience groups wish to read different things so the articles are bound to be different.
The article from Style shows its title in capitals all expect for the word ‘single’ which is in larger lower case font. This word is made to stand out to draw...

Review of What Women Want (Box Set) by

...What Women Want
I remember when I was watching TV and I saw the advert for 'What Women Want'. It showed Mel Gibson walking around hearing other women’s thoughts and trying on all the women’s makeup and accessories. I looked so funny I thought straight away to my self, I have to see this. So I went to the cinema and I was truly disappointed.
The film started out very slow, we saw Mel Gibson working in his office, and then it went on to this new woman arriving. The film then got better, a plot started to develop but it was nothing special. Then we have this new women that had arrived to change the business was being 'bossy' and showing Mel Gibson a few things or two. Then she hands them this box with cosmetics in and they go home and they are asked to 'use' them. Mel Gibson goes home and he tries them, then while using them...

Review of If you could change any part of history, what would it be and why? by
penguinchickalata
Advantages: N/A
Disadvantages: some might be offended- this is not my intention
...women are not allowed to be priests. I cannot see any logical reason, especially not in this day and age when the Church is having trouble-recruiting men for priests.
I am not blaming the bible for the inequality of women (I am also aware that the Western world has come a long way in making women equal to men). I am saying, though, that the way the bible and other religious documents have been interpreted, by men in the past, has been a large contributor to keeping women as the lesser of the two equal sexes. Looking at the treatment of women in some Muslim countries, where they are sometimes not even looked upon as human, is a good example. The Qur’an (the Islam religious documents) deals with men and women as equals.
I know this is not one specific event in history, but a series. I would change these interpretations as I feel women...

Is This Really What Women Want
Review of What Women Want (Box Set) by
jimgib
Advantages: Makes my wife happy
Disadvantages: Bit Mushy
...Having visited the cinema with my wife this weekend I must say that 'What Women Want’ has all the ingredients of success if only from the cast alone. Mel Gibson, Helen Hunt, Alan Alda and Bett Midler.
Mel Gibson plays a well-worn ad executive whom after being involved in a bizarre accident develops the knack to read women’s minds. (If I could only read my wife’s for just two minutes I would be a happier man). This newfound gift comes in very handy as he wages war with fellow ad executive played by Helen Hunt.
Hunt beats him to a much sought after promotion and the fun starts when he sets out on a revenge mission as he is able to steal her ideas and pass them on as his own.
The film gets a bit mushy and in my opinion is a film for the ladies. The film is easy to watch and has some good comical moments. Well worth...

The most repellent advert on TV?
Review of Vodka - Vodka Source [TV Advertisement] by
redcockney
Advantages: Some nice girls to look at.
Disadvantages: Attempts at black humour fail to impress.
...The premise of two psychopathic Swedish women going on the rampage in Sweden (as though they were still ‘on the run’) has left the ad agency in a state of false high spirits. The two adverts within the
series are one, set at a campsite at night where the two women are wrapped up warm while sitting side-by-side laughing maniacally whilst some onlookers look on (presumably in fear). The woman on the left says to a fellow that she would like to borrow the man’s coat. He lends it to her accordingly and it is seen tossed into a camp fire (as is his bobble hat). He shuffles off to join a group of others who are stripped of all their clothing bar their undergarments. The scene then reverts to the two women who clink their bottles of Vodka Source together and say ‘Cheers!’.
The second has them in the daytime, sitting side-by-side maniacally...
